Evan Ari Kelman’s “Barron’s Cove” dips into a parent’s worst nightmare. Neglect and guilt streak through the most diligent, attentive parent’s psyche like an adhesive that just won’t come off. One may do everything they can for their child yet be beleaguered by an aching sense of inadequacy, that they could still have done a lot more. This chasm is a constantly imposing burden; hence, it cannot be thoughtlessly or easily swatted away. One hopes to do their best, putting on an impeccable front that can take care of the anomalies and limitations that unexpectedly arise.
But life throws all sorts of curveballs. Irrespective of one’s preparation and tactfulness, they will be pushed back, ground by hostilities and gaps of perception. The father in this film isn’t of the perfect, exemplary kind, who has an emotional equilibrium. As much as he loves his child, he has to perpetually weather extreme mood swings and irascible bouts. Such a person isn’t a healthy presence around a child, who needs love and nurturing and a safe, stable space.

The film’s tragedy is in the father’s desperation to maintain his role sincerely and lovingly, yet being thrown amok by his worst impulses. His habitual violent oscillations get the better of him. How can he beat those and improve on his conduct? Is there a way out of this chaos? It’s his own inner darkness that Caleb must look within and exorcise. Garrett Hedlund, who’s always reliable, does the rugged emotional character work well, but the film lacks finer delineations. There’s a whole network of goons that Caleb himself has set off that becomes his nemesis. It’s a battle that demands confrontation. There’s no running away from it as the stakes dangerously spike.
The film opens with three kids playing around in the precincts of desolate railway tracks. There’s a slow gathering, an unnerving feeling of the play turning vicious. The bullying of one child gains predominance. Is there any escape from the cruelty kids are capable of? The film cuts ahead just as the scene corks in horror. Caleb is supposed to pick up his teen son Ethan after school, but he gets preoccupied at work and forgets it. His ex and Barron’s mother, Jackie, comes to him anguished, insisting on clarity as to where Barron is. Just then, news trickles in of the boy’s corpse being found. His face has been smashed by the pummelling train. Only a few of his identifiable possessions remain on the spot.

Navarro, a newly appointed detective in the police force, struggles with the department’s decision to brand Barron’s death a suicide. Caleb rails that it can’t possibly be true. There must be foul play, he asserts. But Caleb has been viewed as mentally disturbed for a while. His words won’t be getting much precedence. The devastated Jackie just accepts the brutality of fate. Caleb protests and impassionedly declares he’ll get to the bottom of things. He is determined to unravel the truth, whatever grotesque form it may take.
Why does Caleb kidnap Ethan?
There’s Barron’s classmate, Ethan, who may know more. But he’s the adopted son of state senator, Lyle (Hamish Linklater). Caleb kidnaps Ethan and locks him up, certain of finding the truth from him. This is a drama about bereavement, how it numbs and may turn people into their most harrowing selves. Separating oneself from any ideal projection of decent responses shifts between difficult and impossible. How can an individual endure the brunt of such sorrow, the death of their own child, without mustering every fibre of their being in resistance to silent acceptance? As Caleb and Ethan are bundled together, the two forge their way out of trauma and animosity.
Embedded deep within are gestures towards humanity and compassion, as both learn to recognise what the other truly is. Either of their limitations presents itself. Initially, Caleb is ruthless, using brute force to eke out what he wants from Ethan. The boy, too, is unwilling to budge from his position, holding his own firmly. There’s a stubbornness to Ethan that seems almost indomitable. But Caleb isn’t one to cede. It’s when he notices bruises on Ethan’s back and realises the boy doesn’t want to go home, sympathy wells within. Then there’s Caleb’s uncle, Benji, whose involvement in his life has far bigger implications than he could have ever fathomed. It’s him, Caleb critically undermines, leading to the shock of his life. One cannot say the same for the audience who has already figured out Benji may have a hand in the mess.
Even as the film cursorily winds into vagueness with Lyle’s accretion and his power pursuits, Caleb decides to rescue Ethan and have him dispatched across the borders to a place of safety. Right when Caleb tries to inform Jackie regarding his plans for Ethan’s safer relocation, the situation gets foiled. There are cops on the spot, listening in. Jackie almost gives away Caleb, but she gets emotional and forbids him from going to the spot where the cops would certainly nail him down. However, the deed is done. Benji’s thugs swoop in out of nowhere and corner Caleb and Ethan. Now the duo is left truly helpless. How can they even extricate themselves from the situation? Certain tapes are put on for Caleb to see. Benji and his thugs have surrounded him and roughed him up.

It’s at this point that the most horrid, dire secret that’s been locked within erupts. On the tapes recorded are the final moments of Barron, in which Phillip and Ethan are jeering at his misery. They make jibes at his expense, berate him while he cowers up, terrified and numbed witless. They are gleeful bullies, delighting in his torture. It then begins to dawn on him that Ethan indeed is behind Barron’s death. The final bits of the video show Ethan instructing so that Barron gets strangled.
However, before Caleb can go all out on Ethan, the latter is plucked out of the scene and reinstated to Lyle. The moral quandaries don’t stop here, though the film tries to present two kinds of roads at this point. Caleb gets away from police custody and confronts Lyle. The latter is trying to escape with Ethan. All Caleb demands is that Ethan be given over so he can extract his pending revenge. Lyle agrees with no baulking. Right then, Navarro steps in to apprehend Lyle. The latter gets shot at, and Caleb also gets hit, tumbling down underwater.
When he opens his eyes in the hospital and asks Navarro why Ethan did what he did, Navarro says Ethan was annoyed with how Barron kept on harping about his father being wonderful. That pushed Ethan over the edge to the act of barbarity. In the final scene, Caleb is escorted in a police car somewhere, but suddenly it stops, and the officers go away. The ending shot is a bittersweet reunion between the father and son. Now, there’s ambiguity whether the final act is at all real or designed to give a happy ending for those looking for it. For all one knows and cares for, the film may have ended with Caleb underwater, not surviving the hit.
