“I discovered Friday the 13th in the pages of Famous Monsters magazine when I was 10 years old and I have been thinking about this story ever since,” said Bryan Fuller whose new series Crystal Lake will bring back the cult classic horror franchise Friday the 13th.

Pop-culture favorite hockey mask-wearing Jason Voorhees had bloodied the franchise that delivered a total of 12 campy Halloween horrors for 30 years (1980-2009) and has been silent since. Horror fans are justifiably excited about Peacock’s new drama series Crystal Lake which will serve as a prequel to the beloved gory franchise.

This is not the first time a series spin-off is being made based on Friday The 13th movie. What was originally supposed to be named The 13th Hour, became Friday The 13th: The Series. The show ran for three seasons and was about two owners of a shop that accidentally sold antiques that they later found out were in fact, cursed. The franchise’s intense popularity even drove them to get into the business of novels, video games, and merchandise.

Bryan Fuller’s Crystal Lake to be Friday The 13th’s Prequel for Peacock

Studio A24 will now take responsibility for Crystal Lake, the prequel tv show that will reportedly resemble television’s Bates Motel which is a prequel to Hitchcock’s Psycho. A24 has done remarkable jobs with recent horror hits such as Pearl, The Witch, and even Hereditary, the ones that scarred the audience with instances that will haunt the grounds of horror movies for ages at least. Fuller is thrilled to join the studio that, according to him, “raises the bar and pushes the envelope”.

Victor Miller, the screenwriter of the original Friday The 13th movie, will join Rob Barsamian and Marc Toberoff to executive produce Crystal Lake. The copyright dispute ended with Miller getting the rights over the characters and the script; making the emergence of this Peacock show possible. However, we won’t be seeing adult Jason Voorhees or his violent design in the show as Miller does not have the rights to him or his infamous mask.

Fuller has proven time and again that he can be trusted with making fantastic shows. The maker of Hannibal, American Gods, and Pushing Daisies will now write, executive produce, and showrun for Crystal Lake. Fuller isn’t new to horror. He has worked on NBC’s Mockingbird Lane and also Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. Known for his art that famously includes splattered blood and his signature style that has become increasingly noticeable in his works, Fuller is certain to do justice to the franchise that has waited far too long to be resuscitated.
