‘Black Adam’ Leads the Quiet Box Office, and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Desparately Awaited: Warner Bros.’s Dwayne Johnson-front DC superhero film ‘Black Adam’ spell at the Box office seems to be weakening. Now all eyes are set on the 30th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira. Ryan Coogler helmed Wakanda Forever, which releases on 11th Nov, should push the box office above $200 million for the first time since July and give some relief from the lackluster fall box office.
“Black Adam” crawled passed $35.4 million in its third week, seeing a massive drop of 39% in its third weekend to collect $18.5 million in North American ticket sales. It was another quiet period at the movies as theater operators eagerly await Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which looks to invigorate the lackluster fall box office when it opens on Nov. 11.
After three weeks of release, Black Adam has generated $137.3 million and $319 million globally, beating Birds of Prey and the last DCEU outing The Suicide Squad. It is inching towards a lifetime box-office gross of Shazam!, sitting at $366 million globally.
In the second place, a new anime musical titled “One Piece Film: Red” collected $9.475 million. This is the 15th feature film in the multimedia franchise that began as a manga in 1999, and it has already broken records at the Japanese box office since opening in August.
Universal’s Julia Roberts and George Clooney destination romp ‘‘Ticket to Paradise,’ a romantic comedy drops just 14% in its third weekend to clinch the No. 3 spot with $8.5 million. In a much-necessary breather to the romantic comedy genre, Ticket to Paradise’s total gross stands at $46.7 million domestically and $137.2 million worldwide for an estimated budget of $60 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Just like how killer clown cult Terrifier 2 defied gravity at the box office during Halloween month, Paramount’s psychological horror “Smile,” unironically brings a smile at the box office to generate $4 million this week, bringing its domestic tally to $99 million. “Smile” crossed $200 million globally — a stellar number for a $17 million-budgeted film.
Some of the year’s top Oscar contenders are struggling at the box office. It includes James Gray’s “Armageddon Time,” grossing $810,000 for Focus Features. “Tár,” starring Cate Blanchett as a renowned conductor, took in $670,000 for a five-week total of $3.7 million.
