The following article contains spoilers for the Netflix original series Lady Voyeur.
Lady Voyeur (2023) Netflix Mini-Series Recap:
Lady Voyeur is a Portuguese thriller series that started streaming on Netflix in 2022. We follow the protagonist Miranda (Débora Nascimento), a talented but secretive hacker, through ten thrilling episodes that unfold into an explosive finale. Her childhood contains all the hints of her reserved nature, and the episodes make it clear that she has a grandmother in a nursing home who suffers from a debilitating illness, Huntington’s disease. Fearful of losing her own cognitive functions, Miranda records voice memos daily to archive portions of her life. Her otherwise reclusive, work-driven life is interrupted by one activity: spying on her neighbor Cléo (Emanuelle Araújo), an escort living in the opposite building.
The two women are acquaintances, and when Cléo asks Miranda to come over to her place to watch her dog, Barbie, Miranda completely indulges her voyeuristic, vicarious tendencies, donning Cléo’s clothes, makeup, and accessories. While dolled up, Cléo’s client, Fernando (Nikolas Antunes), arrives at her apartment, and Miranda gives in to the attraction she’s had for him since spying on them the week before.
When Fernando leaves, another one of Cléo’s clients arrives at the apartment. He tries to force himself on Miranda, and she ends up accidentally killing him in the ensuing struggle. Fernando returns to retrieve his forgotten wallet and offers to help her get rid of the body. When Miranda hacks the building security to destroy any video evidence, he begins opening up to her, revealing that this isn’t his first time covering up a murder. Years prior, Fernando acted as an accomplice to his brother-in-law Heitor (Ângelo Rodrigues), the wealthy client Cléo is entertaining for the weekend.
Fernando solicits Miranda’s help to expose the sex trafficking ring he suspects Heitor of running. Miranda then starts working for Heitor in order to investigate him. He’s suspicious of her relationship with Fernando but nonetheless impressed by her skills. However, as Miranda and Fernando grow closer, she quickly becomes entangled in a web of dark secrets and lies.
Miranda receives a video from Cléo, who has since gone missing, asking her to attend a ‘Play Party’ alone in order to help her escape. But plans go awry at the event, and Miranda is drugged, waking up at Heitor’s house where the body of Fernando’s sister, Diana (Gabriela Moreya), is floating in the pool.
As Diana’s murder investigation progresses, Miranda starts trusting Fernando less as a series of schemes and lies about his family unfolds. The spiral continues as she confronts her own past while visiting her grandmother in a nursing home. Flashbacks reveal the extent of her childhood trauma and that her older sister Gabriella had always blamed her for their mother’s death.
Miranda’s best friend, Rita, develops a close relationship with Heitor’s bodyguard, Rafael. As her own investigations continue, she learns that Rafael is also intimately involved with the recently deceased Diana, prompting Miranda to add him to her growing list of suspects.
Who Wanted To Kill Miranda?
Ultimately, we realize that Miranda’s life has been in grave danger all along, as well as the life of her unborn child. In the gripping finale, we learn that Cléo is really Miranda’s long-lost sister Gabriella, who convinced her that their mom’s death was her fault.
Cléo formulated the whole scheme, even leaving her window shades open and allowing Miranda to spy on her, so she could take revenge and eventually kill her. It turns out Mirandas’s love interest Fernando was also in on Cléo’s wicked plot, each of them hoping to use Miranda’s talents to achieve their evil motives before killing her. Despite their best-laid plans, however, Cléo and Fernando are both dead by the time of the gripping finale. Fernando is killed in a scuffle with Heitor, while Miranda shoots Cléo in self-defense.

Review:
In the first few episodes, writers Marcela Citterio and Camila Raffanti deliver a well-paced storyline. However, in building the story for the crime thriller, a few key elements are hurriedly developed or left as loose ends, affecting the thriller element in the long run. Intriguing elements ended up going unexplained or became cliffhanger episodes which didn’t exactly serve such an elaborate plot in the end.
Also, with such haphazard execution, it’s difficult to say whether this series would be able to regain balance in its second season. Although it sacrifices clarity for the sake of subplots and a few half-done concepts, Lady Voyeur is still an entertaining watch.
