True Lies (Season 1), Episode 6 Recap:
Working Vacation
In the present, Harry is cross with Helen for losing his lucky knife. In a brief flashback, we see how Harry used the lucky knife in Venezuela two years ago to save himself from rebels trying to kidnap him. Helen’s introduction to the team has changed things too much for Harry, who is now regretting bringing her into the mix. She is not only interfering in his way of conducting himself professionally but also impeding what he eats and how he packs his bags.
We do not have a central mission for the Omega team in this episode. Instead, the team has to travel to Mexico for the annual sales retreat, where delegations from other countries also come in. The objective of the retreat is to discuss contemporary and developing threats that organizations deal with and exchange information. Luther is excited as he is being awarded the “Salesman of the Year” award since he is the best one among them in his real-life cover.
Maria is disappointed as she will have to spend time with the actual salespeople in the organization, whom she finds boring. Harry talks to Gib about bringing Helen along on the mission. But he immediately rejects Tasker’s requests to leave her out. He asks Harry to deal with the problem on his own. The “Operation Spycation” also gives an opportunity for Dana and Jake to rub shoulders with the people from Omega.
Luther is awkward with the kids, while Maria handles them much better. Helen unwittingly invites boring Brad to lunch and bowling, and Eva, the manager of the resort who hosts Omega every year, flirts with Gib. He does not reciprocate, and he gets nervous. It seems he likes her as well, and perhaps this can be a new development for Gib’s character. The next morning, Dana and Jake decide to go off on their own. Dana has actually planned to go drinking but makes the excuse of taking ATVs for a spin.
The team meets to head for the delegations. Eva introduces Tomas, the head of security who has arranged the spot, and Romano and Sophia, the others in charge of security. The spot is an old warehouse. They have two hours to conclude the meeting while the other regular employees have gone on a conventional meeting thingy. Luther is doing a sweep with the Mexican delegation but has bad news. He informs them that they were attacked by someone and have fled.
Gib and Harry come up with a new plan. They learn that a big team of heavily armed men is approaching the resort. Gib sends Maria to escort the sales team away from the resort and into safety in the woods. The others will stay at the resort and hold the fort. Helen finds out that the children are missing. In order to alleviate the parents’ anxiety, Luther is tasked with finding the kids and taking care of them. Maria takes the sales team on a fake hike.
Eva uses the bulletproof casing around the resort to give the team enough cover and shield to prep their plans. The leader of the armed group is Jann Isaacs, a noted spy hunter. He communicates his seriousness in pursuing the Omega spies and taking them hostage. The Mexicans escaped Jann and his team, but they have surrounded the resort and want the Omega spies. Harry and Gib think it is best that they try to scare off the mercenaries instead of taking them on directly since Omega does not have their arsenal of weapons.
“Sound & Fury,” their normal routine, is the chosen method of fighting off the mercenaries. Gib informs Maria about Jann and updates her on what she needs to do next. She will not be able to receive help from them and will have to deal with the men coming her way. Her bonding with the sales team is hitting a few roadblocks as they are confused about the hike. Harry explains to Helen that the tactic means scaring the enemy so that they start retreating.
True Lies (Season 1), Episode 6 Ending Explained:
Do Dana and Jake learn their parents’ secrets?
For that, they plan to use explosives and some of the weapons they have at hand. Luther finds the kids at a bar where Dana had tried to lie and get beers. He takes them with him to keep them distracted for the day. Eva suggests that they should hack into the enemy’s radio frequencies, feed them misinformation, and scare them off. Jann’s team starts attacking. Subsequently, the security team of the resort tries to hold them off while Eva tries to hack them.
Helen does not let Harry go alone out there as there are too many things he needs to do. Having another hand would be of help to him. Harry concedes that someone handling the explosives would be helpful. Luther notices that a team from Jann’s cadre is following them, and there are armed men with guns. A chase ensues, and they start shooting at Luther. However, he is able to maneuver the vehicle well due to his expert driving skills and gets rid of them. The kids seem to think that they were cops chasing them for the beer incident.
Helen goes to place the explosives while Harry closes in on the mercenaries to execute the plan. Meanwhile, Maria deals with two men by herself and is able to fend off the others. Harry and Helen work in sync to make sure the plan is successful. Eva is able to hack the radios, and their collective efforts work as the men start to retreat, fearing that they are outnumbered. It is just Harry and Jann left, but the former runs out of ammunition. Helen says that she has put a Taser pen in Harry’s front pouch pocket.
He slides under the car to go around Jann’s back and uses the pen to neutralize him. Jann is arrested, and the day is saved once again. After the operation is over, the team relaxes in a grand fashion and parties together at the resort, dancing, drinking, and enjoying each other’s company. The kids do not learn the secret of their parents, which is a bit of a shocker as they witness armed men shooting at them.
That could have changed the entire dynamic of the show if the kids, too, were in the loop about Omega and what they do. Moreover, the makers would have been able to expand their resources and better utilize the show’s rich subtext. This operation makes the team even stronger and shows how adept each of them are individually. Helen and Harry’s growing chemistry is a plus, and they are gradually resolving their personal issues to work with each other smoothly.
Gib might potentially have a romantic interest in Eva, and that would be a welcome change. Maria and Luther now seem to be comfortable with their platonic relationship, although one can never rule that out from materializing.
