Lifetime’s Stolen in Her Sleep (2023) is a harrowing take on a single mother getting stalked by an unknown assailant who wants to steal her baby. Although it does not squarely fall into the category, the shades of psychological suffering and trauma are quite relevant to the film’s discussion. In signature Lifetime style, Stolen in Her Sleep functions without too much fuss. It is told in a simple story structure, language, and relatable characters. Morgan Bradley, Alicia Leigh Willis, and Conner Floyd star in the main roles.
Bradley does much of the heavy lifting as Hallie and does a tremendous job of bringing authenticity to her portrayal. Hallie and James Reynolds move past a horrible tragedy with their newborn baby, Ava, in their suburban house. Ava had a genetic discord in her heart when she was born that couldn’t be rectified with surgery. A heart transplant was performed, and thankfully, Ava lived. Around two months have passed since, and the couple are clearly struggling to cope. James’ job keeps him away from the house for long stretches, and Hallie’s vulnerable mental state has brought back the anxiety she’s been having since her college days. Hallie is an artist and has a house studio built to keep up with her creative energy.
James gets the idea to invite his estranged mother, Lynne, to live with them and help out Hallie with her obligations. The two do not get along instantly, and it is clear to Hallie that Lynne does not like her. On a day out with Ava, Hallie is saved by art PR Megan Deveraux, who becomes a good samaritan by paying for Hallie’s bill. Hallie had forgotten her wallet at home, and Megan was just at hand to save the day. Megan vowed to help Hallie with getting her exhibition of art in front of the right eyes. But ever since they met, strange things started to happen.
Hallie starts seeing a mysterious hooded stalker who follows her everywhere. She fears for Ava and her own safety, even as Megan assures Hallie “she is seeing things.” Hallie gets distant from both Lynne and James to an extent. Someone starts messing around with Hallie in the house, like sabotaging her paintings, turning the place upside down, and intervening with her ongoing medication.

Who was scheming to steal Ava from Hallie?
Mary, Hallie’s nanny, and house help, is murdered in broad daylight when she had Ava with her. That incident further sends Hallie stokes her paranoia. But that is when James starts to realize he has been missing from his family’s life for far too long.
James vows to help Hallie get back to normal after she insists she has struggled alone in the house. The relationship gets much better as Hallie asks Lynne to limit her frequency to the house. But one fateful day, James goes on a run near the house and is run off the road by an unknown white SUV. James falls very heavily on his head and lays there unconscious. Hallie, who had a meeting with Megan that afternoon, is shocked to find out about the developments. That is when she leaves Ava with Megan, and Hallie goes to the hospital with Lynne.
Hallie and Lynne bond over an emotional moment when the latter confronts the former about why she doesn’t like her. Hallie realizes that Lynne just wants to be close to her son again and that she cares about the family as a whole. Lynne concedes that she made a mistake in apprehending Hallie as a mother and was over-involved in their family life. Hallie’s instincts take her back to the house, where Megan has put Ava to a peaceful sleep.
Why was Megan making Hallie think she should seek psychiatric help?
She then proceeds to say something shocking and something we never saw coming. In the subtlest of ways, she indicates to Hallie that she should “seek help.” Every time Hallie saw the hooded man in public, Megan denounced it and said that Hallie was “seeing things.” The same things happened in Hallie’s house. The final nail in the coffin truly was a self-portrait that Hallie was doing of herself. The painting has been crossed with red paint. Earlier, Hallie suspected Lynne was doing it, and there was tension regarding that.
But Lynne conceded at the hospital that it was not the case. Hallie threw the painting out in the garbage, but to her surprise, she saw it back in her studio the next day when Megan was in the house. She pleaded for help with Megan, who promised that she would look after Ava. This was the perfect plan, as James was in a coma. His condition was serious but stable. More importantly, no one knew when he would wake up. Hallie agreed, for the sake of Ava, to seek help and be committed to a psychiatric facility to get treatment.
On their way to the facility, Arden Pines, Megan made a pit stop. When she didn’t come back for a while, Hallie thought the worst and went inside to investigate. She was shocked the find the hooded man unconscious on the floor. But before that, she looked around the house and was equally shocked to find a baby’s nursery. Megan had earlier told Hallie that she wasn’t married and had no kids. So, why this nursery?
As the man started regaining consciousness, Megan walked in and asked Hallie to keep an eye on him while she phoned the police. The man turned out to be Luke Deveraux, Megan’s husband! He alerted Hallie to the fact that Ava has their daughter Lily’s heart, pointing toward a painting that Hallie had made for the family who gave Ava a heart. Megan had been scheming all this while to steal Ava away from Hallie as she couldn’t cope with Lily’s passing. Hallie confronts Megan when she was running away with Ava. Megan attacked Hallie and almost killed her, but Luke was at hand to save Hallie and call the police.
Megan’s plan was to commit Hallie to the facility and keep her there. She was a psychiatrist in real life, and that’s why she wanted Hallie to seek treatment so that Ava could come to her without too much fuss. Megan is arrested, and Hallie allows her one final embrace of Ava to give a semblance of closure. We see that James has made a full recovery, Hallie’s art exhibition is a success, and the family is truly united.
