My Happy Marriage (Season 1), Episode 3 “Our First Date” Recap:
The episode begins with Kiyoko enjoying the meal prepared by Miyo. Kiyoko asks her to join him as he goes to town. Miyo tells him she would burden him and has no reason to go to town. Kiyoko insists that she will not be a nuisance and asks her to wear the kimono she wore the day she arrived. Miyo hesitantly agrees. Even without saying it out loud, the day and date of their first date are set. Miyo prepares for the date by combing her hair with her mother’s broken comb. Yurie informs her that they have installed a mirror just for her, which she can use. Yurie asks Miyo if she wants to help with her makeup, and Miyo responds by saying that she had never used makeup before. Yurie is excited and tells her that she will help her with it. Miyo is upset because she has no makeup, but Yurie solves the problem by providing basic makeup.
Yurie helps Miyo with makeup, and once she is done, she is thrilled to see how beautiful Miyo looks. Kiyoko calls out from outside to check if she is ready. Miyo runs out so as not to keep him waiting. Kiyoko’s eyes sparkle, seeing Miyo’s transformation. They leave for their date. Kiyoko informs Miyo that they would stop by his workplace first as parking is a hassle, and she does not need to feel concerned. At his workplace, they bump into Kiyoko’s co-worker, Godo. Godo gets curious about Miyo and tries to get more information about her identity. Kiyoko informs him that she was escorting him that day and that he needs to stop prying and return to his post. After he leaves, Kiyoko tells Miyo that he is gifted with supernatural skills more than he would like to admit.
They visit the town, and Kiyoko asks her if she wants to buy or needs something, but Miyo cannot think of anything. Kiyoko thinks for a bit and asks her to accompany him to run some shopping errands. Miyo is fascinated by everything she sees. Kiyoko asks her if she is having fun, and Miyo starts apologizing. Kiyoko lovingly pats her head and tells her to enjoy the day to her heart’s content, and nobody would scold her. He also tells her not to think of her as a nuisance as he wants her there. He advises her not to get lost while exploring, and Miyo tells him she will be careful. Miyo wonders why people would call him cruel when he was so kind.
Mr. Tatsuishi is speaking with Shinji about Miyo being married off to the Kudo family. Shinji tells him he has abandoned Miyo and does not care about her well-being. However, he assures Tatsuishi that Kiyoko will lose interest in Miyo when he discovers she has no supernatural abilities. He was free to take her when she was abandoned. Tatsuishi wonders why he would abandon Miyo when her offspring can be gifted. Kaya asks the maid what her father is talking about, and she tells her that it is about Miyo. Kaya loses her temper, but Koji asks her not to raise her voice and, to ease her anger, offers to take her shopping. Hesitantly, Kaya agrees but thinks that Koji still has feelings for Miyo.
Kiyoko takes Miyo to a prestigious Kimono store. The lady in the store informs him that everything is ready as per his request. They sit to chat, and the lady teases Kiyoko that his time is finally here as he has never brought a woman to the store. Kiyoko thinks about the conversation between Yurie and him. Yurie had informed Kiyoko that Miyo would sew her own kimono, and Kiyoko had realized that she just had one good kimono. He tells himself that she would own many more if she were properly cared for.
Kiyoko chooses a cherry blossom-colored material to get a Kimono stitched for Miyo. The lady in the store advises him to hold on to her no matter what happens, as she is like a gemstone that needs polishing to shine. She tells her that buying her a kimono is only the beginning, and he needs to shower her with love and wealth. Kiyoko watches Miyo look at a cherry-colored kimono and says, “I miss you.” Kiyoko is confused. Kiyoko takes her to eat, but he discovers she does not like the food. He wonders out loud what she would look like when she smiles.
Kiyoko informs Miyo that the next step in their relationship is marriage, and he wants her to be open and honest rather than always apologizing. Miyo is worried as she realizes that he does not know that she does not possess any supernatural abilities, but she feels she needs to be by his side for a long time. Kiyoko leaves a box that contains a comb in front of Miyo’s door. Miyo loves the comb and rushes to Kiyoko and tells him that it looks expensive, and she cannot accept it. But Kiyoko tells her that it is a gift. Kiyoko recalls Yurie’s words saying Miyo always used a broken comb, and his gesture would mean a lot to her. She gave her approval for his relationship with Miyo. Kiyoko asks Miyo to use it freely and looks at her to find her blushing and smiling.
My Happy Marriage (Season 1), Episode 3 “Our First Date” Ending, Explained:
The episode ends with Kiyoko discovering that Miyo does not possess supernatural abilities. He also realizes how Miyo has been treated all her life, and buying her a few possessions cannot heal her. He also learns that her birth mother was a relative of the Usuba clan. Kiyoko walks out of his office, thinking that he has been going home early since Miyo’s arrival when Shiki-gami attacked him. Kiyoko wonders who was brave enough to send these to spy on him.
In this episode, we see Kiyoko’s kind-hearted, caring, and loving side. He is anything but the reputation he had. Miyo felt loved and cared for like never before. Without knowing the whole truth, Kiyoko had already started treating Miyo well; now that he knows about her family situation, how he looks at Miyo will be much more loving. In the end, the Shiki-game was probably sent by Mr. Tatsuishi to know how Miyo was doing so they could swoop in and take her away from him. Kiyoko needs to be more careful now and protect himself and Miyo.
