David Lowery, the versatile filmmaker behind The Green Knight and Disney’s upcoming Peter Pan & Wendy, is gearing up for his next project with A24 – a vibrant and sweeping pop music melodrama. The movie, entitled “Mother Mary.” follows the fictional journey of a musician (Anne Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Michaela Coel).




The musical talent behind the soundtrack is equally impressive, with acclaimed super-producer Jack Antonoff and genre-defying British pop sensation Charli XCX in charge of creating an unforgettable musical experience. The score will be composed by Lowery’s frequent collaborator, Daniel Hart.

Produced by Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, James M. Johnston, and Jeanie Igoe of Homebird Productions, “Mother Mary” will be filmed in Germany, supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the DFFF. A24 will handle the global release, with Topic Studios co-financing.




Hathaway, who recently appeared in “The Witches” and “Locked Down,” has been keeping busy with her 2023 already full with several projects under her belt. Her latest film, Eileen, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, garnering critical acclaim. Hathaway will also appear alongside Jessica Chastain in the upcoming Neon movie Mother’s Instinct. And later this year, audiences can look forward to seeing Hathaway in the Amazon picture, The Idea of You.

She will play the lead in Mother Mary alongside Coel, who starred in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and created, wrote, and directed the critically acclaimed series “I May Destroy You.” Coel’s star power continues to rise in 2023 as she joins the cast of the highly-anticipated Amazon series Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Co-created, executive produced, and co-starring alongside the multi-talented Donald Glover,




“Mother Mary” promises to be an exciting addition to A24’s slate of award-winning films, offering a fresh take on the beloved genre of pop music and its ability to shape culture and identities.
