The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is excited to announce that this year’s Closing Film will be Anora, directed by Sean Baker. The film will have its South Asia premiere on October 24, 2024, the final day of the festival, providing a spectacular conclusion to a lineup filled with world-class cinema.
Since its debut at the 2024 Festival de Cannes, where it garnered the esteemed Palme d’Or, Anora has captivated audiences. Distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery in India, the film combines Baker’s signature empathy for marginalized characters with screwball dramedy, narrating the tale of Ani (Mikey Madison), a Brooklyn sex worker entangled with the Russian mafia.
Baker, who previously served as the head of jury for the International Competition section at MAMI in 2018, continues his exploration of marginalized and often overlooked individuals in society, a theme evident in his previous works like Tangerine and The Florida Project.
Anu Rangachar, Head of International Programming at MAMI, expressed enthusiasm for the festival’s closing film, stating, “It’s a fitting tribute to end the festival with one of MAMI’s most beloved alumni, Sean Baker, and his Cannes Palme d’Or winner, Anora. This film serves as a searing critique of wealth, privilege, and the American dream, brought to life by Mikey Madison’s luminous performance.”
Scheduled from October 19 to October 24, 2024, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival promises a vibrant six-day celebration of global cinema, community, creativity, and culture. With over 110 films spanning more than 50 languages, including features and non-features across various genres, the festival aims to bring cinematic excellence to the heart of Mumbai once again.
Don’t miss the chance to experience Anora and the diverse range of films at this year’s festival!
