The Season 1 Finale of Bad Monkey, episode 10, concludes a story that blends mystery, drama, and flawed characters, keeping the audience guessing about each twist in the tale. In the last episode of the season, Yancy faces the aftermath of his investigation alongside the complex dynamics between Eve, Nick, and Gracie. With a mix of personal stakes and unraveling chaos on Keys Island, the finale wraps up various plot points while hinting at the potential for more to come.

In this article, I will discuss what happens in the 10th episode of Bad Monkey and explain the finale’s ending. Please be cautious while reading, as this article contains spoilers.

Bad Monkey (Season 1 Finale), Episode 10 “We’re in the Memory-Making Business” Recap:

Why does Eve kill Gracie?

The finale of Bad Monkey picks up from the ending of episode 9, where Eve had come to Gracie for help. Gracie returns as the Dragon Queen, realizing she must finish what she started. Since the Striplings are the common thread in Keys Island’s problems, Gracie takes it upon herself to fix things. However, things don’t pan out well.

Although I didn’t have much hope for the series to succeed magically, at this point, I questioned my intentions of taking up this show as my project. Anyway, the Dragon Queen dies because Eve loses her temper when her employee—Gracie—chooses to demonstrate her witchy powers at the wrong time, especially when Eve has to worry about saving her badly injured, almost paralyzed (down to three moving toes) husband, which she never thought she would have to do.

So, to give you a bit of context on how Gracie died: During a face-off between the two women in the woods (with a very dramatic stormy backdrop), when Eve came to Gracie to help her with Nick, Gracie tried to intimidate and warn her to leave the island. However, upon feeling threatened, a very disoriented and enraged Eve throws Gracie onto a broken tree branch, ultimately killing the Dragon Queen.

Ideally, a series would end the scene there, but no, makers of The Bad Monkey want to outdo their stupid writing. So, right when Gracie dies, we see her spirit visiting Ya Ya, Egg, and Lulu to say her goodbyes.

How did Egg know about Yancy’s plan to catch his boss?

The aftermath of the heavy storm on the island leaves everyone (including me) drained. With Nick completely paralyzed from the waist down and Egg also injured from the bullet wound, Eve is stranded, trying to save herself and figure things out. Yancy and Neville team up again, plotting ways to catch Eve red-handed. According to the plan, Yancy calls Director Rhodes to stage a call to Eve, making her believe that the insurance company will soon freeze their account due to an investigation.

Yancy’s plan partially works as he finds Eve rushing to the nearest bank to collect cash. However, just when he confronts her, Egg shows up. So does the island’s mayor, along with police officers accusing Yancy of being the chaos maker in town. This allows Eve to get away again, leaving Yancy to take the police officer’s car, along with Neville, and flee the scene. It turns out that Eve narrowly escaped Yancy’s plan because Claspers mistakenly tipped off Egg about Yancy’s plot to catch Eve.

Why does Eve kill Nick?

Eve has always been a self-obsessed ‘Miss Congeniality,’ according to Yancy. She doesn’t think about anything but herself, and despite Nick believing in her and going out of his way for her, she only wants to keep herself afloat. Seeing that Nick can no longer protect or take care of her materialistically, she decides to handle things the only way she knows how. Noticing that Eve is no longer her usual optimistic self but becoming more calculating, Nick realizes his end is near. His guilt doesn’t help as he dryly pleads with Eve to tell his daughter how much he loves her. Eve doesn’t care and coldly pushes his wheelchair into the lake that connects to the seabed, drowning Nick.

Eve shrugs off her bad karma as she watches Nick drown. She then takes her dog and reaches the yacht Nick bought for her. She hands over extra cash to Egg for his service, and when he questions her about Nick, she tells him that he has to fetch Nick himself as she is too tired to push the wheelchair due to the heat. As Egg leaves, Eve quickly takes charge of the yacht and somehow manages to drive it away from the boatyard.

Bad Monkey Season Finale Episode 10 “We’re in the Memory-Making Business” Ending Explained:

Is Yancy able to catch Eve?

Neville and Yancy reach the boatyard, and as they see Eve getting away, Yancy jumps into the water to go after her. Despite knowing the water is too deep, and the yacht is speeding up, Yancy holds tight to the yacht’s anchor rope. This is when a flood of thoughts about his inhibitions, failures, and disappointments overwhelms him, as we hear the voices of his father, Rogelio, and Rosa telling him just to let go. For Yancy, it’s crucial to catch Eve because he’s been right about everything ever since Rogelio handed him the case that had Nick’s severed arm in it. Catching Eve would be a cathartic moment for him as a detective, validating his ability to connect pieces despite his quirky personality, which often gets him into trouble.

However, as fate would have it, Yancy lets go of the rope and watches Eve get away. Holding onto the rope would have meant Yancy drowning and being unable to finish what he started, while letting go meant releasing his obsession with something that was only dragging him down, further distancing him from the things that truly brought him joy. This case had only brought him chaos and trouble, taking him away from the things that made him smile—his connection with Rosa, his friendship with Rogelio & Neville, and his deep bond with his father.

Did Gracie’s curse work?

At the end of the mayhem, the locals of Keys Island finally discover the culprit behind their troubles—Nick’s washed-up corpse on the shore. After escaping Yancy and leaving behind her life in the Bahamas, Eve lives a luxurious life far away from the cursed island. But did she truly escape Gracie’s curse?

Going back to the moment of Gracie’s death, right before taking her last breath, Gracie cursed Eve to choke on all her lies. I guess there’s some truth to karma and how it bites back. It turns out that before Eve could fully enjoy the life she envisioned, she ultimately dies from choking on the baby carrots she always munched on good days. Unable to breathe and choking, Eve falls from the roof of the resort where she was staying, resulting in her death.

The People of Keys Island Return to Normalcy

We then see Yancy catching up with Caitlin, who is saddened after her father’s ‘real demise’ this time. Neville finally reunites with his best friend, Driggs (the monkey), when Ya Ya decides to let the monkey go, realizing he always missed his owner. Lulu (Dawnie’s sister) accepts Ya Ya’s offer to learn magic from her after seeing Gracie’s ghost visit her following her departure. Neville decides to build a cabin on the same spot his grandfather had built (Egg had earlier destroyed the place on his boss’s command), using the money from selling Nick’s watch, and even pursues his relationship with Dawnie.

Yancy is again demoted to a food inspector after breaking numerous laws and protocols to catch Nick and Eve. Returning to his regular life, he finds Madeline and Pestov as his new neighbors in the house next door. It turns out the couple bought the house at an auction and plan to demolish it to build a cabin, mindful of the place’s beauty. Yancy is happy to hear this news after everything that’s happened.

Does Yancy and Rosa get back together?

He gets a call from Bonnie, who wants to pursue their relationship again, believing nobody else could touch her heart like Yancy did. However, Yancy gives her a vague response and disconnects the call as Rosa approaches him. Yancy and Rosa have breakup sex, and though Yancy is hopeful about getting back with her, Rosa says goodbye.

Does Yancy take up a new case?

The ending of Bad Monkey season 1 finale, i.e. episode 10 shows Rogelio arriving at Yancy’s place. As the two friends patch up and sip their favorite drink, Rogelio mentions that a new case has come up, and Yancy might want to look at it. However, Yancy declares he’s leaving behind his life as a suspended detective and wants to take things slowly as a food inspector.

At this point, the finale episode of Bad Monkey connects similarly to episode 1’s beginning, where Rogelio waits for Yancy to think about his choices—whether to let a new case torment him in the way he secretly enjoys. Yancy takes a moment, finishes his drink, and ultimately asks Rogelio about the case, hinting at a possible season 2 of Bad Monkey.

Bad Monkey Season 1 Review:

Yancy, who loves being a detective, is not our typical investigator. Despite having a motor mouth, a loud and clear conscience, and a weird, quirky personality, his approach to taking on a new case isn’t just about solving it but more about how he can outdo his own level of smartness.

My initial reaction to his character was, how can a detective be so lousy and so undetermined to fix himself and take charge of his life? I couldn’t stand him, but as the series progressed, Yancy’s character became the only thing that interested me more than anything else. I wanted to see what more screw-ups he was capable of and whether he could really outsmart the people around him as he liked to believe. I guess this is the only thing the series nailed properly: getting their audience hooked up on a screwed-up character.

The show, of course, has lazy writing, and this has been, by far, one of the worst shows Apple TV has ever created. With no sense of building mystery or giving any depth to supposedly ‘mysterious’ characters like Dragon Queen/Gracie, Bonnie, or even Eve to an extent, the show literally dragged itself across 10 episodes, further teasing its audience with the possibility of a second season.
