Buying Back My Daughter (2023) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
The movie begins with Dana (Meagan Good) and her husband Curtis filing a complaint about their daughter’s disappearance. Dana and Curtis’s (Roger Cross) hearts are pounding out of dread, but the police officer doesn’t seem concerned. He staunchly suggests that in most of the cases, the girls run off to be with their boyfriend, to teach their parents a lesson. Dana is a dentist who has just moved into the town with her husband and two daughters, Alicia (Faith Wright) and Cadence (Bianca Lawrence).
Dana was thrilled to embrace the new chapter of her life, but her daughter, Alicia, didn’t seem to appreciate the relocation. She was annoyed by the fact that she’d have to attend a new school and make new friends again. Fortunately, Alicia was able to befriend a few students from her school during her parents’ housewarming party. One night, Alicia’s friends arrived at her house for a sleepover and convinced her to sneak out after curfew hours to attend a party. Even though Alicia was hesitant at first, she eventually agreed.
Alicia asked her friends to return, but they denied it, leading Alicia to return alone. Unfortunately, Alica was picked up by a woman in the can, who drugged her. The next morning, Alicia’s friends joined Dana for breakfast, but her daughter didn’t. When Dana checked up on her, she found her room to be empty. Dana tried calling Alicia, but the call didn’t go through.
That’s when Dana’s younger daughter, Cadence, revealed that last night Alica snuck out of the house. Dana tried her best to find Alicia. She questioned the students attending last night’s party, but it proved ineffective. Some told Dana that they saw Alicia walking down the road, whereas some saw her near the parking lot. What follows next is a mother’s effort to rescue her 16-year-old daughter.
What Happens to Alicia?
After exhausting all the ideas and contacting everyone in Alicia’s friend’s circle, Dana and Curtis tried filing a police complaint. The cop, on the other hand, remained unfazed and advised them to wait more hours before filing a missing person’s report. The cops eventually agreed to file the report when Alica didn’t return even after a few days. The film then shifts to the present, and we learn Alicia is kidnapped by Ron (Aron Douglas), who threatens to abduct her younger sister if she keeps on screaming. Ron is a criminal who abducts and traffics women and minors for his escort business. He works alongside Lori, his associate responsible for procuring more girls. Meanwhile, Dana and Curtis are scouring the entire town, plastering flyers, hoping to get any information that would lead them to Alicia.
Dana’s frustration grows to the point when she even begins grabbing people with the same hoodie as her daughter’s. Alicia’s abduction also takes a toll on Dana’s mental and physical wellness. Dana quits her job and devotes herself to finding Alicia. She even begins to overlook her younger daughter, Cadence. Alicia meets Destiny, who advises her to be smart and do whatever Ron says, or he’ll make her disappear, just like her predecessor, Amy. Destiny was also kidnapped by Ron and his associate a couple of years ago and, since then, has been gathering tips to escape. Ron, on the other, is not so kind and considerate and keeps beating his girls whenever they refuse to adhere to his orders or misbehave with any of his customers.
What is “upostpage?”
Even though the cops agree to continue their search, they try to prepare Dana and Curtis for a negative outcome. When Alicia didn’t return for a couple of months, Dana joined a support group to cope with her frustration and pain. Therein, she meets Nancy (Theresa Wong), who advises her to check a website called “upostpage,” an escort website. Nancy further states that sometimes girls who’ve fallen off the radar turn up in the “adult” section. Dana follows her advice and manages to find Alicia on the escort website. Dana and Curtis waste no time going to the cops, who assure them they’ll investigate the situation and keep them in the loop.
Realizing the police are no good, Dana decides to take the matter into her own hands. Initially advised against it, Dana dials the number on the advert, planning to buy her back. Even Curtis tries to convince her of the latter, but it proves ineffective. Meanwhile, Destiny finds an opportunity to flee and asks Alicia to come with her, but the latter denies claiming if she escapes, Ron will abduct his sister and put her through the same ordeal she’s going through right now. With no choice left, Candice leaves her behind. Unfortunately, Ron catches her sometime after and threatens to kill her the next time she tries to leave.
Buying Back My Daughter (2023) Movie Ending Explained:
Did Dana and Curtis Rescue Alica?
Dana and Curtis call the number given in the advert, expressing they want to hire the services of Alicia, alias “Princess.” Ron agrees to a house call when the duo offers to pay extra. Both parties agreed to meet at the bus stop the next night. The following night, Dana and Curtis find an opportunity while Rori is busy on a call. Lori tries to intervene, but Dana incapacitates her with her taser.
Despite being back in her own home, Alicia’s terrible experiences have not left her mind. She can’t help but dwell on her thoughts of Destiny and the gang. The memories from the site still continue to haunt Alica’s dreams. Dana assures Alicia that she’ll make sure her pictures are taken down from the website and the men who abducted her are put behind bars. Unfortunately, Ron had introduced Alicia to drugs, and when the latter couldn’t control her urges, she turns back to Ron.
However, this time, Dana has sewed some trackers in Alicia’s backpack, fearing Ron and his men may try to kidnap her again. Dana shows up at Ron’s house and staunchly asks Ron how much he will take to release her daughter and never bothers her family. Ron, however, claims that Alicia has no intention of going back and even invites Dana inside to try to convince her to leave the place. Dana desperately tries to convince Alicia to return home with her, but she denies it.
Dana returns the following morning with the police and frees Alicia, along with many other girls. Since Ron had turned Alicia into an individual depending on drugs, Dana and Curtis had to send their daughter to an addiction and trauma treatment center, hoping she’d be back in a couple of months. Dana, on the other hand, opens a support group and charity to help the victims of sex trafficking to make sure they don’t go through the same ordeal as Alicia.
