Coyote (2023): Movie Ending, Explained – Dustin Curtis Murphy’s new sci-fi horror film Coyote is a slow burn set in a dystopian future. The film’s underlying social critique is uncompromising and polemically directed at the exclusionary policies of modern-day governments. Keeping the borders closed for aliens or foreigners, social mores associated with homosexuality, and the exploitative handling of vulnerable immigrants are some instances of Murphy’s commentary. Coyote has many layers to it and is told non-linearly to make the most of its narrative ambiguity.

While Murphy’s attempt is commendable, he somewhat falls short in terms of world-building. After the first 20 minutes, Coyote is rigidly placed in one setting and becomes one-dimensional. Although the streamlining of narrative focus pays rich dividends in the form of taut storytelling with non-existent loose ends, it somewhat vitiates viewers’ early expectations. Coyote is beset with many red herrings, making it’s ending a big surprise. In this piece, we break down Coyote’s plot summary and Coyote’s ending for our readers.

Coyote (2023) Movie Synopsis & Plot Summary:

Coyote begins with its core idea of significant advancements in teleportation technology. We see an instance of that happen as a young, grieving father, Hunter, angrily exacts revenge on a “coyote” who teleported illegally into England. Hunter lost his young girl at an immigrant’s hands and couldn’t bear seeing another one make the jump. Tragically, the dead man was also bringing his newborn daughter over, who is now left without a father.

Our focus shifts to the Rasskazovo Federation (formerly Moldova), where we meet our protagonists, Anya and Ekaterina. The former is a maid, and the latter an escort. The couple is trying their hardest to accumulate enough money to make the jump into England and start a new life. Their efforts also involve them learning the language to blend in with the people of their dream home. But things are getting difficult at the Federation. The police are hunting down people in a genocide-like undertaking with no regard for individual or human rights.

Why do Anya and Ekaterina decide to make the jump illegally?

Anya’s father, who disapproves of her sexual orientation, visits her in the city. She is guarded but agrees to see him. Actually, he has come to the house to get Ekaterina arrested by a police officer he was in cahoots with. He had brought the teleportation cube with him. But the officer wanted to arrest Anya as well. In the chaos that follows after, Anya’s father is killed, and Ekaterina is badly injured. To save her, Anya takes Ekaterina to her employer’s house. Both their faces are recorded on camera. That is when they decide to run with what they have.

They go to Vas Niko, a British smuggler who has access to many “sender” boxes at his house. He charges a hefty sum to send immigrants like Anya and Ekaterina. Since they do not have enough money, he makes them choose: only one can make the jump. They had previously decided to wait if they didn’t have enough money for both of them to make the jump simultaneously. But since Ekaterina is injured and needs help, she makes the jump, and Anya is left back at home.

Ekaterina makes the jump to the house of Orla Miller, Niko’s friend who houses many such vulnerable women at her safe house. Orla is forthcoming in her help and assures Ekaterina that she will not be “forced into doing anything she doesn’t want to do.” She hires Ekaterina as a maid after she lies about what she did back home. The other girls at the house – Salima, Taraji, Chyou, and Marzanna – are also very guarded. Taraji keeps warning Ekaterina that Orla is not what she looks like.

What is the reality of Orla’s safehouse?

The next night, Ekaterina is shocked to learn that Orla actually invites high-ranking public officials to the house and allows them to “choose the girl of their liking” for money. They spend the night and are teleported back to their houses by Orla in the morning. She is running a flesh trade from her house, contrary to what we thought earlier. This also explains why Taraji struck Marzanna with a plate in her head. Marzanna had grown tired of slaving her body out every night and wanted freedom. Ekaterina grows increasingly suspicious of Orla’s intentions. The two public officials of vested interest in the plot are Mr. Blue, Charles Ward, and Mr. Green, Richard Baqri.

Chyou tells Ekaterina of an incident when she went to Green’s house and saw a dead girl in his arms. Since that day, Orla only invites the men to her safe house and never lets anyone go outside. In order to bring Anya back at the earliest, Ekaterina decides to join the flesh trade. Her experience ensures that neither she herself nor Chyou are “exploited” or “taken advantage of” by the visiting men. Ekaterina notices that Orla teleports men from a secret room in the basement. The key is to access that room and use the unused “receiver” boxes Orla has to bring Anya to England.

Coyote (2023) Movie Ending, Explained:

Where did Orla send Taraji?

One incident with Taraji rattles the entire household and spurts Ekaterina into action. Quite unexpectedly, she is able to get her hands on some receiver boxes and breaks them. Orla is unhinged and sends her into a place called “limbo.” Chyou explains Limbo as the situation “when you jump with nowhere to go. Only the person who put you there can bring you back from there. “ She reveals that Taraji has been sent to this Limbo several times by Orla, and that is why her mental state seems fragile and shaky. Taraji believes that Mr. Green loves her and will do anything to take her with him.

Why does Ekaterina decide to bring Taraji back?

Orla, who had previously opened a bank account for Ekaterina with almost £3500, drains all her money. She had previously mentioned that Ekaterina could only use the money, even though Orla would have access to it. Orla grows increasingly discontent and weary by her situation. She starts to drink heavily, and that is when Ekaterina decides to make her move. Subsequently, she uses the BDSM gear Mr. Blue had brought over to tie her up and steals her gun. She involves Salima and Chyou in her plan as well.

They bring back Taraji, who looks ghastly and has blood around her nose and mouth. Ekaterina reveals that Mr. Green is in love with Taraji and wants to take her away from that wretched place. Orla deliberately prevented that from happening. Ekaterina is also shocked to find photos of Anya with Mr. Green on Orla’s tablet. They book an appointment for Mr. Green and jump him into the house. Ekaterina holds him at gunpoint and questions him about Anya. It turns out that Anya and not Ekaterina made the jump in the first place.

What happened to Anya? Why did she jump first?

The non-linear approach made us believe it was Ekaterina who jumped first. They decided Anya would go first as her name and face were everywhere on the police’s radar. Also, Ekaterina had an injury, and the teleportation would have harmed her greatly. She would be better at hiding, given the present circumstances. Anya was forced into the flesh trade and became Mr. Green’s favorite. But Charles also had his eye on Anya, and when she and Chyou had gone to Green’s house, Charles forced himself on Anya and badly injured her. Green had no idea this would happen and took her into his arms.

Green did not take Anya to a hospital, instead making her jump back. We see that Anya sent Vas a video message explaining her tragic ordeal. This shook Vas as he didn’t have any prior knowledge of the flesh trade. He sat in disbelief, looking at the list of thousands of women he had sent to Orla in the past. Overcome with guilt and regret, he took his own life by laying half of his body in the teleportation chamber that killed him. Ekaterina, who hadn’t heard from Anya in a long time, broke into Vas’ house and found him dead. She took the tab, saw Anya’s message, and came to England to find her lover.

What happens to Orla?

Back in the present, we see Green overpowering Ekaterina and taking the gun. Orla is freed, and she sends Green back to his house. She lines up Chyou, Taraji, and Ekaterina to send them to Limbo. Taraji is first, but Ekaterina shows strong will and character to prevent that and sends Orla to Limbo instead. A flash forward shows that the house has now been converted into a better place than before. To everyone’s surprise, Anya jumps back to the house, and Ekaterina rejoices with happiness.

What does the final voiceover mean?

We also hear a voiceover where the newsreader says that many members of Parliament, including Baqri and Charles, were found guilty of indulging in the flesh trade and human trafficking and have been missing from their houses. In all probability, the girls are behind their disappearance, taking revenge for all the atrocities they committed on them.
