Cross is an American crime thriller series created by Ben Watkins and based on the Alex Cross novels by James Patterson. It follows Dr. Alex Cross, a forensic psychologist and homicide detective with the D.C. Metro Police, and his partner John Sampson as they track some of America’s most dangerous killers while Cross tries to protect his family from the dangers that come with the job. With Cross season 2 arriving on the OTT platform, it feels like the right time to revisit season 1 and catch up on what shaped this chapter.

The Alex Cross books have been around since 1993, spanning more than 30 novels in which Cross solves complex cases while confronting his past. The stories mix psychological crime with relationships that feel personal, all rooted in Washington, DC, especially Southeast DC, where that setting matters. The series stands as more than a straightforward adaptation. After many film attempts to bring the character to screen, Cross finds its footing in long-form storytelling. Prime Video’s take blends a classic procedural structure with social commentary, creating a story that moves with focus and purpose.

In this article, I will take a deep dive into the series. Please note: the article contains spoilers.

Cross (Season 1) Episode 1 ‘Hero Complex’ Recap:

Who made the threatening call to Alex?

The first episode of Cross introduces us to Alex and his wife Maria at a football match with their friends John and Onika. Unfortunately, a gunshot kills Maria instantly. A year later, Alex, now a workaholic, clashes with Detective Akbar during an interrogation at the police station. While others feel there is nothing much left, Alex notices a slip when the suspect, Miller, uses the phrase “life’s fitful fever.” Alex later confronts him, calmly pushing his buttons and pointing out that the phrase gives him away. The DA agrees there is enough to move forward. Alex and John are then assigned a new case. Emir Goodspeed, a local activist, is found dead in his car from an apparent overdose. The department wants the case closed quickly however, Alex doesn’t wish to. Chief Anderson asks him to speak at a press conference, clearly using him for optics but he refuses.

The investigation leads Alex and John to Emir’s sister, Malika, who believes her brother was murdered and that the police are involved. The overdose story does not add up, Emir had no enemies, and the autopsy shows he ate pork, despite being a Muslim convert. Alex believes Emir was force-fed and then killed. The Chief pushes back but gives him 48 hours to prove it. At home, someone breaks into Regina’s house while she is out with Alex’s kids. A scarf is planted in Damon’s room. Later, Alex realizes it is the same scarf Maria wore the night she died. He understands the killer is now coming for him. As pressure builds, a burner phone leads Alex to Tavio Lemmons. A police chase ends with Tavio being shot dead by a sniper, right in front of a crowd. Chief Anderson plans to pin Emir’s death on him. But nothing is over. Alex receives flowers, a photo of Maria with her eyes scratched out, and a phone call. The voice on the line promises they will meet soon.

Cross (Season 1) Episode 2 ‘Ride the White Horsey’ Recap:

Why does Ed target Shannon?

The second episode opens with Alex coming downstairs with his gun drawn in the middle of the night. It turns out to be his daughter Janelle getting a glass of water. When the glass slips and shatters, Alex freezes. Nana Mama is worried, and it is clear Alex is still living with fear and guilt. He apologizes to Janelle, but John later makes it clear that sorry is not enough. John confronts Alex about losing control and brings the focus back to the case. Tavio’s phone is missing, even though it was seen at the scene when he was shot. That phone is their strongest lead. A viral video complicates things further. When someone finally watches it closely, they notice a woman taking Tavio’s phone and hiding it. Her name is Vanessa. Vanessa believes the police will not deliver justice. She keeps the phone and plans to hand it to someone she trusts. Her friend Mel gives her a gun for protection and looks after Vanessa’s son, Tavie.

Elsewhere, Ed, using the name Josh, meets Shannon from a dating app. She is angry about being catfished but agrees to breakfast. Ed’s partner, Bobby Trey, warns him about Alex Cross but is sent to retrieve Tavio’s phone. Back at Alex’s house, Janelle is stalked by a man outside. The security system is hacked, forcing Nana Mama to shut it down. When Alex returns, he notices the hopscotch numbers in the yard have been changed to match the exact time and date of Maria’s death. Alex tracks Vanessa, but Bobby Trey finds her first. He forces her to unlock Tavio’s phone, steals both devices, and kills her before escaping. Alex and John arrive too late. Before the phone goes dead, Alex learns a message was sent to journalist Tania Hightower. He strikes a deal with her for access. Visiting Tavie, Alex recovers Tavio’s last voice message, which points to an address. It leads straight back to Ed. The next morning, Shannon comes over for breakfast. Ed drugs her and calls her Aileen as she loses consciousness.

Cross (Season 1) Episode 3 ‘The Good Book’ Recap:

Who is framing Alex Cross?

Cross (Season 1)

We get introduced to Brenda Leeland, a troubled woman struggling with addiction. She receives a package with a gun inside and a clear message telling her to kill Alex Cross. Alex starts his day at the cemetery, trying to visit Maria’s grave on their anniversary. John joins him, but Alex cannot bring himself to face it. The grief is still too heavy, and he walks away. Instead, he goes to Judge Matlof, hoping to secure a warrant for Price Street. He lays out how Emir and Tavio’s deaths connect, but the judge refuses, saying there is not enough proof. Back at the station, Alex unknowingly rides an elevator with Brenda, who follows him closely, waiting for the right moment.

At the same time, John learns the hair found on Maria’s scarf belongs to Susan, a wheelchair-bound colleague. She believes the killer may be someone from an old case, possibly a man named Jerry Cooper. She also thinks her dog was killed to avoid suspicion. Elsewhere, Shannon wakes up tied in Ed’s basement, forced to take part in his disturbing games. Despite warnings from Bobby Trey, Ed refuses to shut everything down. Chief Anderson dismisses the murder theory again, backing a false report that hides key details about Price Street. Alex uses this angle to his advantage, pitching the location as a possible drug den. This finally earns him a warrant. As police search the house, they miss the hidden basement where Shannon is being held.

The raid turns up nothing, leaving Anderson furious. Later, Alex tracks down Brenda. She fires at him, but Alex shoots first, killing her. Initially, it looks bad, but a note ordering Brenda to kill Alex clears him. The bullets in her gun were tampered with, showing she was set up. Brenda’s car leads Alex back to the cemetery, where a strange dress is found nearby. He also realizes Price Street has an undiscovered basement. Ed refuses to quit. Trey kidnaps Shannon and demands money. Alex and John reach the basement too late, but they uncover evidence of Ed’s plan. He is turning his victims into copies of famous serial killers, with Shannon meant to become Aileen Wuornos.

Cross (Season 1) Episode 4 ‘Masks’ Recap:

Can Alex stop Ed?

A flashback takes us to Susan in court, working as a lawyer. She talks about a case involving Lance Marion, who was brutally beaten and tortured by Deidre Nolan. He was struck 17 times. Susan is wearing the same dress that was later found hanging in the cemetery. In the present, Alex learns that Brenda once worked as a correctional officer at the same prison as Deidre but was fired for abusing her authority. Alex had testified in Deidre’s case, stating that she could not be rehabilitated. This clashes with what he tells his children about always believing in hope, and it troubles him.

Meanwhile, Ed keeps Shannon tied up in the basement closet of his new house. He hires workers to soundproof the place so no one can hear her. At the station, Alex and John connect their findings to a book about serial killers. They realize the murders they are investigating copy the exact methods used by real killers. This leads them to believe the book is the key to the case. They name it the “Fanboy” case, noting there are 12 murders planned and 11 already connected.

Alex and John also link the case to dating apps. They discover Emir and Shannon both used the same app, which allows matches across genders. The killer appears to be using the names of real serial killers as aliases. To draw him out, they decide to leak information through activist Tania Hightower, which causes public backlash when Shannon’s disappearance gets major attention. Alex realizes the killer wants admiration and attention. Time is running out. John obtains Deidre’s psychological evaluation, written by Alex, which points to revenge as a motive.

Another clue comes from Shannon’s skin condition. Her treatment requires a specialist chemist. This leads them to a shop called Kugler’s, where the medication was bought under the name Harry Powers, another serial killer alias. This mistake gives them a trail. The team learns Ed is from Indiana and obsessed with serial killers, seeing himself as an artist. After a night out, Alex is humiliated when his 911 call from Maria’s death is played publicly. Later, a chase involving Trey ends with him escaping. By morning, Alex finally realizes the truth. Ed Ramsay is the killer.

Cross (Season 1) Episode 5 ‘What Happens at Ramsey’s’ Recap:

Will anyone believe Alex?

Episode 5 of Cross opens with Ed Ramsay cooking a large dinner. He has his serial killer book back and continues torturing Shannon. He forces her mouth open to make a mold of her teeth. In public, Ed is the opposite of who he really is. He is charming and confident as he hosts a birthday party at his home. Many powerful people attend, including Chief Anderson, Elle, and Senator Caitlin. Alex Cross also arrives, and it is clear trouble is coming.

The episode then jumps back three days. Alex and John investigate Ed’s past, looking for weak points. Elle’s birthday invitation gives Alex the perfect chance to question Ed without lawyers present. John speaks to Ed’s former neighbor, Dex Notrale, who says Ed always seemed off. Dex also mentions a man called White Mike and reveals Ed’s mother is still alive, despite Ed claiming she was dead. Alex realizes Ed has serious issues tied to his mother and asks John to dig deeper. At the party, Alex uses his criminal profile to describe the Fanboy killer. Ed stays calm, but Alex sneaks into his office and finds photos and blood-stained letters from Ed’s past. Ed later joins him, and they share a tense drink while talking about the profile. Alex pushes Ed by using the nickname “Fanboy.”

Cross (Season 1)

Ed strikes back during dinner by publicly sharing personal details about Alex’s family, which upsets Elle. She later faces pressure from a donor, Lawrence Buckley, about her activism. Ed steps in, revealing she is dating Alex, which makes things worse for her. Later, Alex secretly confronts Ed and shows proof linking him to his mother. Ed sends a message telling someone to act. At the same time, Shannon escapes briefly and is seen by Senator Caitlin, who realizes Ed is the killer but stays silent due to blackmail. Ed captures Shannon again but is badly injured. During the party, old footage of Alex is leaked, damaging his reputation. Alex finally accuses Ed in front of everyone, but no one believes him. Chief Anderson shuts him down and orders him to leave.

Cross (Season 1) Episode 6 ‘A Bang, Not a Whimper’ Recap:

How deep does corruption go?

Episode 6 of Cross begins with Alex being advised by his union representative. He is told to hand in his badge and gun and stay away from the case. Alex agrees on the surface but has no intention of stopping. Outside the station, Malika and a group of protestors are waiting, still angry at the police. Chief Anderson has already searched Ed Ramsay’s house and found nothing. Because Ed willingly allowed the search, the department believes he is innocent and shifts focus elsewhere. Alex is the only one who refuses to let it go. Even John begins to doubt him. Alex and John argue fiercely in the locker room about the assault that got Alex suspended.

Things nearly turn physical until Shawna steps in. The argument spreads through the station, isolating Alex further. Alex then receives flowers with a note saying, “You’re still my number one,” clearly from Ed. Protestors also spray the word “Abolish” on Alex’s car. At home, things get worse when Damon is suspended from school after a fight. Kayla later brings helpful news. She connects “White Mike” to a punk band from the 1980s that Ed followed closely. The band used violent imagery on stage, which explains Ed’s obsession.

Alex decides to follow this lead and heads to Philadelphia with Damon. On the drive, Alex explains the assault video to his son and admits he was wrong. Damon reveals he fought at school because kids showed the video to his sister. The moment helps them reconnect. Meanwhile, Kayla freezes a financial account linked to Ed, hoping to force him out. The account actually belongs to Trey, who becomes furious and plans to flee. Ed remains focused on torturing Shannon.

Alex meets White Mike, whose real name is Michael Grisham. Michael admits Ed was obsessed with death and once sent him a knife used in a murder. Alex realizes Michael witnessed the crime and moves him into protective custody. This finally convinces Anderson to reopen the case, and an emergency grand jury meeting is scheduled. Elsewhere, Regina investigates Deidre Nolan’s past and learns she had an accomplice. As things move forward, John and Kayla confront Ed. He mocks their witness, and then the truth is revealed. Detective Massey is corrupt. She kills White Mike, ending the episode on a shocking turn.

Cross (Season 1) Episode 7 ‘Happy Birthday’ Recap:

Can Alex save Regina?

We see Ed Ramsay preparing the final stage of his plan where he records a video explaining how lethal injections work on death row. This is how he plans to kill Shannon. Nana Mama tells Alex the name she learned from the former cop she questioned earlier. The man is Peter Lenox. She urges Alex to look into him. Before he can, Alex gets a call about what happened to Michael Grisham. He realizes the killer needed help from someone who could move unnoticed.

Alex visits Senator Caitlin and asks about what she saw at Ed’s birthday party. She finally admits she saw Ed with blood on his hands. Alex promises to protect her and keep her name out of it, confirming Ed is the killer. Shannon is forced to eat a final meal while Ed prepares to kill her. His lawyer, Whitney, arrives and says Ed’s money has been frozen but stays to help with the setup.

At the station, tension remains between Alex and John as they review Ed’s possible location. Alex suddenly connects the clue “happy birthday” to the murders. Each victim disappeared just before their birthday. Shannon’s birthday is February 29, which explains why Ed is acting now and why he waited a year. Ed also contacted a plastic surgeon, which gives Alex another lead. While Alex follows it, John realizes Detective Massey is the corrupt cop. She admits Ed paid for her child’s medical care in exchange for help. John arrests her.

Alex confronts Dr. Marla Daine, the surgeon, but she attacks him with a syringe. She admits she helped Ed willingly and leaves Alex alive so he can witness the ending. John arrives in time and uses a tracker to follow her. Police find Ed’s warehouse, where he is livestreaming his final act. Alex and John arrive in time to save Shannon. Ed escapes but returns home and injects himself when Alex confronts him, ending the Fanboy case. Trey escapes. Alex then learns Peter Lenox is stalking his family for revenge. Ed later wakes up alive, kills a coroner, and goes to the hospital where Shannon is recovering. As he tries to finish the job, Alex stops him at gunpoint. That night, Peter Lenox breaks into Alex’s home and attacks Regina.

Cross (Season 1) Episode 8 ‘You Had Me at Motherfucker’ Recap:

Will Alex finally find peace?

Cross (Season 1)

The finale episode of Cross opens with flashbacks showing the bond between Alex and John. After Alex lost his parents, Nana Mama raised him and promised everything would be okay. In the present, that promise feels uncertain. Regina is taken to the hospital after being attacked. Alex knows Peter Lenox is responsible. To keep the kids safe, he sends Damon and Janelle away with Elle to a remote cabin owned by Damon’s music teacher, Miss Nancy. The place is far away and outside Alex’s routine, making it seem safe. Alex stays behind to focus on stopping Peter.

While digging into Peter’s past, Alex learns his family is dead. Peter once mentioned a “street mom” who looked after him. A call with Janelle helps Alex realize family is not always about blood. He suddenly understands the truth. Miss Nancy is Peter’s accomplice. When Alex calls her, Miss Nancy drops the act and admits she is in control. Damon also finds a photo of Miss Nancy with Peter, confirming it. They keep quiet to protect Janelle.

Miss Nancy gives Alex four hours to come alone. Alex instead goes to John, apologizes, and asks for help. At the cabin, Elle drugs Miss Nancy and tries to escape with the kids, but Miss Nancy wakes up. Peter arrives and attacks Elle. Alex and John rush to the cabin separately. Alex is tied up inside with the kids. Outside, Peter shoots John, or so it seems. Inside, Miss Nancy pours kerosene on the kids and forces Alex to choose one to die. Alex reveals the truth. Miss Nancy framed Deirdre, Peter’s sister, to protect Peter. Peter did not know this.

John suddenly crashes in, alive, and fights Peter. Peter is knocked out. Miss Nancy admits she killed Maria and then sets the cabin on fire, killing herself. Peter is arrested. Ed Ramsay is later questioned in custody. The police deny him fame by blaming the crimes on a corrupt ex-cop. Alex is cleared, Chief Anderson is promoted, and Malika thanks John. Damon performs at his recital, Alex visits Maria’s grave, and finally begins therapy.
