Handsome hunk behind the camera, Damien Chazelle celebrates his 39th birthday today on January 19, 2024. Chazelle indeed needs no introduction as his work speaks for itself. He has made some major contributions to the film industry by delivering iconic films like Whiplash, La La Land, First Man, and many more. While Chazelle enjoys a successful career as a filmmaker, he even once aspired to be a musician. Though he couldn’t make his dream of becoming a musician a reality, he incorporated his love for music into his films.

The great artist is the one who learns from his surroundings and implements it in his art. Talking about Chazelle’s films indeed tells a lot about his life. When Damien was in high school, he wanted to become a musician, specifically a jazz drummer. However, he soon realized that he did not have the innate talent of a musician, so he returned to his first love of filmmaking.

Despite his briefly pursued dream of becoming a musician, he made a lot out of it. While he was in high school, he had an intense music teacher, who became the inspiration for the character of Terence Fletcher (played by J.K. Simmons) in his Oscar-nominated film Whiplash.

With his 2014 flick Whiplash, the director rose to a meteoric rise, and after that, he produced some incredible films, which made him the recipient of numerous accolades.

Just like the story of Whiplash, the tale behind the making of the iconic film is also very interesting. It was a personal project, revolving around the story of a jazz drummer in high school. Chazelle explained that, stuck on other projects, he wrote Whiplash. However, when he completed the script, he was skeptical about showing it to the world, believing it was too personal. He said, ‘I put it in a drawer.’

Since the script didn’t get enough attention initially, it was later featured on the Black List in 2012 as one of the best-unmade films of that year.

For those who have seen Whiplash, thanks to Right of Way and Blumhouse Production, who eventually picked up the film and produced it. Anyway, that gem couldn’t go unnoticed. Starring Miles Teller, the film garnered several accolades, including three Oscars for Best Supporting Actor, Film Editing, and Sound Mixing. Moreover, Chazelle also received an Oscar nomination for his screenplay.

Whiplash was just the start of Chazelle’s directorial career; after that, he delivered the musical gem La La Land, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The film was well-acclaimed by critics and also received several top honors, including the Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Director, making him the youngest director to win an Oscar at the age of 32.

The next big hit by Chazelle was the 2018 film First Man, where he once again collaborated with Gosling. The film, based on a novel telling Neil A. Armstrong’s story, was well-received by the audience and is considered one of the best films of Chazelle.

The latest film directed by Chazelle is Babylon (2022). It is an American epic period comedy-drama film, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Tobey Maguire, and others.

With an account of such great films, fans can certainly vouch for the upcoming works of Damien Chazelle.
