Black Superman Reboot Details: James Gunn has cleared the air about a possible reboot of the Superman character for DC Studios. There was intense speculation leading up to the public acknowledgment that a black Superman reboot was coming soon. The movie was first announced about two years ago under the tutelage of JJ Abrams. The studio had made the decision to part company with Henry Cavill as the eponymous character recently, which was not met with a lot of fanfare. Cavill appeared in the 2013 Zack Snyder helmed Man of Steel and subsequently in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
At the same time the project was announced, it was also indicated that it would be a live-action adaptation, marking the first occasion where the ethnicity of a superhero character has been changed from the comic books. Ta-Nehesi Coates, the lauded correspondent at The Atlantic, was roped in to write the script. It is a carefully considered decision by the Studio, given the frailties of such drastic creative upheavals. Gunn has now confirmed that the Black Superman reboot would not be a part of the “central DC universe” and would be an Elseworlds project like the recently released The Batman and Joker.
The following excerpt is taken from an interview conducted by Gizmodo in reference to Gunn’s statement. “Those two things are totally unrelated. That’s an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it. So if it comes in and it’s great, which I haven’t read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That’s totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker.”
We have not gotten any updates regarding the release date or plot details about Black Superman. It is reasonable to expect the project to be delayed until the Studio successfully clears its slate of upcoming releases, which include Superman: Legacy. The main point of discussion would remain the actor who will play the Black Superman.
No names have yet been thrown into the rumor mill, but it is only a matter of time before the casting starts, and we can get more information on probable candidates. The Studio is yet to find a director for the project. They have confirmed that the process has begun, although the primary contenders are yet not clear.
Upcoming DECU Movies in 2023:
DC has quite the offerings lined up for us this year. After the lukewarm reception to Shazam: Fury of Gods, released last month, The Flash is set to take the theater screens by storm. The new movie is set to release on 16 June 2023 and stars the controversial Ezra Miller in the central role. Blue Beetle is poised for a Fall release in August and will introduce the comic character for the first time in a live-action setting. Expectations are high for this one as Xolo Maridueña stars in the titular role.

And finally, to round off the year, we will be seeing an Aquaman sequel, titled Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom, in December of this year. Amber Heard’s long-drawn court case brought the focus onto the movie earlier this year. She was removed as Mera after her allegations against Johnny Depp could not be proved in court. A lot rests on its shoulders as Aquaman seems to be the most liked character by DC fans among a current lot of characters. We will update our readers with more details as they become available. For now, Black Superman is a long way off.
