Even if Avatar: The Way of Water opened in theatres in 2022, the long string of “Avatar” delays hasn’t ended yet. The Walt Disney Company moved the release of Avatar 3 from December 2024 to December 2025 on Tuesday. The timetable for the following anticipated installments is further pushed back. The new release dates for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are December 2029 and December 2031, respectively.

If those times are accurate, the Avatar movie series will have covered the first four decades of the twenty-first century. James Cameron, who debuted “Avatar” in 2009, has indicated that he might not be directing “Avatar” sequels 4 and 5. The 68-year-old Cameron would be 77 by December 2031. At the box office, “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” have brought in a total of over $5.2 billion.

Disney also changed plans for several of its most popular brands on Tuesday. There will be two “Star Wars” films in 2026. One was moved up to May 2026 from December 2025. For December 2026, another was added. The studio has not disclosed details on either untitled production.

The Marvel calendar was also altered on Tuesday as the studio continues to reconfigure its future plans in its superhero kingdom. The biggest is the move of Avengers: Kang Dynasty from May 2025 to May 2026. Jonathan Majors, the actor who has been accused of domestic violence, plays the lead role in that movie, which is a crucial release for Marvel. Majors’ lawyer has refuted the accusations and maintained that he is innocent.

The majority of the Marvel movies are being released a few months later, among other changes. Instead of May 2024, Captain America: Brave New World will debut in July 2024, followed by Thunderbolts in December 2024, Blade in February 2025, and Fantastic Four in May 2025.

Another Alien movie from Disney’s 20th Century is now scheduled for August 2024. And one film debuts earlier: Deadpool 3 will be released in May 2024 rather than November of next year.
