The man behind some of the most influential animation work in the cinematic world, Don Hertzfeldt, is working on something huge. Interestingly, for his upcoming project, Don Hertzfeldt will be collaborating with filmmaker Ari Aster. Hertzfeldt is a renowned American animator, writer, and independent filmmaker. He is best known for animated films such as It’s Such a Beautiful Day, the World of Tomorrow series, and Rejected. The filmmaker has also been nominated twice for the Academy Awards.

Meanwhile, Aster is known for exploring the unsettling combination of horror, dark comedy, and depictions of graphic violence. His works include Hereditary (2018), Midsommar (2019), and Beau Is Afraid (2023). Now, it would be interesting to see what these notable filmmakers can bring to the table together.

What’s up with Don Hertzfeldt’s upcoming project?

Don Hertzfeldt is undeniably one of the best animators in the cinematic industry. However, despite his impeccable artistry, the filmmaker regrets spending a lot of time on a single project, which prevents him from delivering numerous projects like other filmmakers in the industry. But from now on, Hertzfeldt has made a firm decision to work on a larger scale.

Speaking to The Guardian, the animator said,

“I’m not getting any younger. You just want to work faster. I’m jealous of actors, of musicians, of people able to put out multiple things in one year. To take two years to make a short film is just absurd. I don’t want to use a Marvel term, but we’re expanding the universe. I don’t relish doing this alone! I can’t be drawing little round heads by myself for the rest of my life.”

Throughout his career, Hertzfeldt has bestowed the film industry with some incredible work. His work has been described as “some of the most vital and expressive animation of the millennium” and “some of the most essential short films of the last 20 years“.

The filmmaker has delivered several short films, out of which eight of his short films have competed at the Sundance Film Festival. However, his large-scale animation has not always triumphed. For instance, his project, Antarctica, fell apart. Still, the filmmaker hasn’t given up yet, as he is all set with his other big project, whose development may commence soon. At the Overlook Film Festival for the premiere of his latest short, the dialogue-free musical ME, Hertzfeldt confirmed his tease from earlier this year that he’s working with Ari Aster on a new feature. Spanish film critic Carlos Aguilar wrote on his social media platform X,

“Don Hertzfeldt confirmed that he is working with Ari Aster on a big/expensive project that he had been developing and trying to get made for the last 15 years. He described the project as horror film in the same way his existentialist shorts are often seen as horror films.”

Neither Hertzfeldt nor Aster has revealed further details about the project. However, considering their work history, something exciting can be expected.
