Euphoria (Season 3) returns in a very different place, and it is clear from the start that the show is no longer really about high school life. In its earlier seasons, it mixes teenage drama with darker elements, but now it leans much more into crime and chaos. A lot of time has passed, and the characters are no longer believable as high school students, so the story shifts its focus. The tone feels heavier, stranger, and sometimes even more extreme than before. Yes, it has humour, but it quickly dies down when other characters’ emotions or struggles are shown.
The overall style of the episode has changed, with the music no longer having the same emotional intensity as before. Sam Levinson uses a very juvenile tone, connecting the story with crime and western influence, somewhat taking the story in a direction that feels unnecessary. The episode still holds onto the ideas of loneliness, confusion, and carrying an unfathomable emotional pain. However, Euphoria Season 3 feels far from reality and completely out of touch with the same core idea that it was born with.
In this article, I will break down the first episode of the third season while also revisiting how we last saw the recurring characters in earlier seasons. Please note that there are major spoilers throughout the article.
Euphoria (Season 3) Episode 1 ‘Ándale’ Recap:
What is happening in Rue’s life lately?
Just like the earlier seasons, the latest season begins with Rue Bennett at the center of the story. She appears to be doing better, at least on the surface, and she seems to be in recovery, although she still uses weed. However, she is still connected to the drug world, in particular to Laurie, a calm but dangerous drug dealer who used to be a schoolteacher. Laurie lost a large amount of drugs because of Rue’s actions in the past, and now she has Rue in a chokehold and forces her to work to pay off that debt. Rue’s job is risky and, honestly, extremely disturbing, as she transports drugs across the border by swallowing balloons filled with fentanyl, carrying them into the United States, and then passing them later.
The intensity of Rue’s journey is strange and also includes a moment where her car gets stuck in a dangerous position on a border fence. During this trip, Rue also meets a family of strict Christians who live a simple life. Their way of living makes her question her own beliefs, and given the line of ‘work’ she is in, adds another layer to her character, making her question whether anything good is ever going to happen to her. However, she is not alone, as Faye helps her during these trips. Faye struggles more with the process, and the situation becomes uncomfortable and messy in ways that are hard to ignore.
What happened to Fezco?

Outside of Rue’s story, the episode quickly checks in on other characters. Lexi is now living a stable life and working as an assistant for a powerful woman in the entertainment industry. She begins to develop feelings for an upcoming young actor connected to her work. Her life seems calm compared to the chaos around Rue. In the meantime, we also find out that Fezco, who played an important role before, is now in prison. Maddy is also working in a similar professional setting as a talent manager, but her job is not as glamorous as it appears. She struggles with money and feels the pressure of her situation, even though she tries to maintain a confident image.
Meanwhile, we also get to see one of the most talked-about characters of the entire season – Cassie. It seems like her life is much more complicated. Her relationship with Nate is still intact, but it definitely looks more intense and difficult. Nate has taken over his father’s business and is trying to expand it into new areas. However, things are not looking good for him as he tries his best to stay afloat somehow. At the same time, Cassie is focused on creating the perfect wedding and building her online presence. After a really uncomfortable dinner table discussion with Nate, she decides to start an OnlyFans account as a way to earn money, and this becomes part of her plan to support her lifestyle.
As the story moves ahead, Rue continues to struggle with addiction and identity as we see her meeting with her sponsor, Ali. They discuss about bible, faith, and how the religious context heavily suggests that being gay is a punishable sin.
Euphoria (Season 3) Episode 1 ‘Ándale’ Ending Explained:
What happens when Rue meets Alamo?
Later, Rue is sent to deliver drugs to a man named Alamo, in an isolated place. This man seems to be well-connected, powerful and his authoritarian personality is very intimidating. At first, he seems impressed by Rue because she walks into his space without fear and speaks to him directly. He even considers her offer to work for him instead of Laurie. However, things quickly become serious when the drugs turn out to be contaminated. Alamo begins to question whether Rue is responsible.
Rue tries to explain herself, saying that her encounter with the Christian family made her believe that this moment might be guided by something greater. Alamo decides to test this idea in a shocking way. He places an apple on her head and shoots it off with a gun, risking her life in the process. The ending of Euphoria (Season 3) Episode 1 shows that, by sheer luck, Rue survives, and the moment feels both terrifying and strange, leaving her shaken but still alive. Will Alamo actually trust Rue? Will she leave Laurie and finally find a place where she can take control of her own life? Or is she just going to keep falling because of her bad choices and addiction? Or maybe all this questioning about faith finally leads her somewhere better, like we’ve all been hoping for?
