The fifth installment of the Mad Max franchise, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” is close to its theatrical release. The first reaction to the film is already high. Directed by George Miller, the upcoming post-apocalyptic action-adventure film will be serving as both a spin-off and prequel to the 2015 film “Mad Max: Fury Road.

The film will delve into the origin story of Imperator Furiosa before becoming the war captain of the ruthless Immortan Joe. Notably, the role of Furiosa was previously portrayed by Charlize Theron, and now Anya Taylor-Joy would be seen taking on the mantle of the title character. In March 2020, Miller conducted casting auditions for the title role of the film. Ever since then, the anticipation for it has steadily increased.

What does the prequel film Furiosa have in store for the audience?

The success of previous Mad Max franchise films has already established its name in pop culture. So, the announcement of the release of its prequel film is enough to generate hype among moviegoers. What adds a layer to the upcoming “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is the star power attached to it. Apart from fan-favorite Anya Taylor-Joy, the film consists of an ensemble cast including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, and Alyla Browne.

The film’s premise is set 15 to 20 years before the events of “Mad Max: Fury Road.” As the world falls apart, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and into the hands of a Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). While two Tyrants are at war for dominance over the Citadel, Furiosa survives many trials as she plots a way back home through the Wasteland.

Since it’s a Mad Max franchise film, you can definitely expect some thrilling action sequences. In fact, the trailer also showcases a glimpse of such action-packed scenes. And now, as the first reactions are rolling out, critics have much to say about where Miller takes the franchise after years of waiting for another installment.

Some fans took to their social media handles to share their first reaction to Furiosa

Erik Davis, an American writer, scholar, journalist, and public speaker, praised Miller’s “powerhouse action filmmaking” and the prequel’s “stunning cinematography.” Meanwhile, film critic David Ehrlich noted that the film manages to make “Fury Road” “even richer.” Other critics say this is Miller at his best and laud the film’s epic worldbuilding and expansion of the universe’s lore.

While these reviews might help moviegoers decide whether to buy tickets, one can judge for themselves if the film is worth the hype. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” will have its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on 15 May 2024 and is scheduled to be released in theatres on 24 May 2024.
