What is ‘Goyo’ on Netflix about?

One day, on his way to the museum, he notices Eva (Nancy Duplaa) and falls for her at first sight, even if she is significantly older than him. After seeing Eva in the museum, Goyo returns home and starts painting Eva’s portrait from memory. Saula is surprised to see him painting because he has not picked up his brush in a long time. She asks him who the person is, and he talks about Eva. The next day, after the job, he follows Eva to the subway train. Suddenly, the lights go off, and he has a panic attack. So, he walks out of the train. From inside, Eva gives him a middle finger. Back home, he speaks with Matute about how he lost the chance of making a first good impression on Eva. Matute tells him not to lose hope and to tell her honestly what happened.

The next day, Goyo comes clean to Eva. Until then, Eva thought Goyo was just a random creep. But her co-worker, Lucy (Mayra Homar), tells her that Goyo is innocent and harmless. So, she feels bad for how she handled the matter. Soon after, Eva & Goyo bump into each other. He offers her company as she waits for her train. While she is honest about her emotions, he finds it hard to be truthful. Subsequently, he just shares some factual trivia before they part ways. Back home, Matute thinks Goyo should pursue his love, but Saula worries he will end up getting hurt if he does so.

Does Eva agree to go on a date with Goyo?

Matute guides Goyo on how he should approach his love for Eva. He makes some widely specific queries about sex because of his apprehensions. But Matute answers them no matter how silly or strange they may sound. He wants Goyo to have an experience like any other person. Eventually, Goyo asks Eva out on a date. Although hesitant at first, Eva agrees to join him for dinner at his house. Later, she shows up at his house hoping to give a chance to this man who’ll never lie to her as the partner from her past relationships. Like before, their conversations are awkward because of Goyo’s communication problems. But Eva makes sure it doesn’t become an issue.

By the end of the night, Eva sees the expressionistic portrait Goyo made of her. Touched by his genuine emotions, she decides to sleep with him. After spending the night at his house, she returns home to find Miguel inside. He wants her to forgive him and get back to the relationship they had. Since Eva refuses to do that, he hurts her and Tato. So, she throws Miguel out of the house. Meanwhile, she doesn’t respond to Goyo’s texts, which makes him worried about her. He finds out where she lives and shows up there with gifts for her & Tuto. But he doesn’t keep Saula or Matute in the loop. So, they get worried about him.

Once Goyo returns home from Eva’s house, Saula confronts him about his relationship. She worries about Goyo getting serious about Eva, who has a broken marriage with her violent husband. But Goyo refuses Saula’s advice. So, Saula feels she should put an end to their relationship herself. Meanwhile, Goyo learns where Miguel works and meets him to speak about Eva. But Miguel gets furious and punches him in the face. Later, at work, Eva questions Goyo for taking this impulsive step. She wonders whether their one-night stand makes him think they are a couple. Upon hearing that, he has a panic attack. In that state, he walks out and has an accident.

At the hospital, Saula suggests Eva shouldn’t see Goyo anymore for the greater good. Later, their estranged mother, Magda (Cecilia Roth), comes to check up on Goyo’s condition. Unlike Saula, Magda thinks they should let Goyo make his own decisions as an adult. So, she wants him to pursue Eva’s love if he wants. Goyo stays obsessed with Eva despite what anyone else tells him. One rainy day, he leaves home with her portrait and meets Eva in the garden. He asks her whether she still thinks what they did was a mistake. She feels bad for him. While she apologizes for how she behaved before, he accepts her the way she is. The film ends with them hugging each other. Although it doesn’t explain whether they end up together or not, it ends on a positive note for their relationship.

Goyo (2024) ‘Netflix’ Movie Review:

From the get-go, “Goyo” seems like an adorable drama that can easily charm you. It follows a reserved man falling head over heels for a woman older than him. He is pulled back because of his condition, which limits him from having social skills like many others. On the other hand, the woman is apprehensive because of her past failed relationships with unreliable partners. She is fed up with men she cannot trust. So, when love knocks on her door, she finds it hard to refuse, especially when it comes from someone as harmless & honest as Goyo.

With all these elements, “Goyo” has the elements of an underdog narrative and a dorky romance where it is impossible not to root for them. You want them to succeed in their pursuit and not end up broken-hearted even if reality stands in the way. In this tragic set-up, the film works because of its inherent charm and a couple of wonderful performances. Although Nicolás Furtado’s lead performance feels derivative, Soledad Villamil and Nancy Dupláa’s performances are enough to make you care for his titular character. Despite a compassionate & relatively finer romance, the film falters toward the end when it tries to resolve all things at once and ends up saying nothing substantial or memorable.
