Based on Alice Feeney’s popular 2020 novel of the same name, Netflix’s “His & Hers” (TV Mini Series 2026) is a taut adaptation that delivers an irresistibly compelling thriller. Starring Jon Bernthal and Tessa Thompson, the six-episode mini-series delves into the world of misdirections, secrets, sexual violence, and trauma – and fetches a fairly polished gem. So much so that the possibility of an undercutting final twist is vanquished by the clever deployment of genre tropes. Amidst the plethora of suspects, “His & Hers” keeps the identity of the real culprit well hidden. Let us analyze how the twist, despite being surprising and demanding an extra dose of imagination, does not become too far-fetched to be ludicrous.

His & Hers (TV Mini Series 2026) ‘Netflix’ Recap:

“His & Hers” starts with honoring the traditions of thrillers. It begins with a murder. The camera zooms in on the bloodied body of a woman sprawled atop the bonnet of a car as rain patters away. The next morning, we learn we are in Dahlonega – a city near Atlanta. Local police detective, Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), arrives at the scene with his deputy, Priya Patel (Sunita Mani). So does Jack’s hitherto missing wife, Anna Andrews (Tessa Thompson). A bit of backstory is required here. It has been almost two years since the crib death of Jack and Anna’s young baby girl. Understandably, the death shook both of them, changing their relationships forever.

Anna left Jack, her friends, and family to vanish without a trace. Jack lost his career in Atlanta and returned to Dahlonega to become a small-town cop (Dahlonega is the hometown of both Jack and Anna). He now stays with his sister, Zoe (Marin Ireland), and Zoe’s young daughter, Meg. Back to the murder story. It becomes clear that Jack recognizes the victim immediately.

However, he hides that from his partner, Priya. Even more surprising is Anna’s reappearance and her brazen inquiry into the victim’s identity, arousing Jack’s suspicion. Before coming to Dahlonega, Anna paid a visit to her old office at WSK TV news. She used to be the top anchor of the channel. However, her disappearance meant the rise of Lexy Jones (Rebecca Rittenhouse). Lexy is WSK’s top anchor now. As a favor to Anna, her old boss reinstates her as a field journalist, a role she had insisted upon.

Anna’s goal was to use her journalistic position to go back to Dahlonega and investigate the murder. While at it, she also hopes to cause trouble for her rival, Lexy. She asks for Richard (Pablo Schreiber) as her cameraman. Richard is Lexy’s husband. Unsurprisingly, she manages to bed him on their first day at Dahlonega. Meanwhile, the dead woman is identified as Rachel Hopkins.

From Jack’s shifty behaviour and subsequent revelations, we understand that Jack and Rachel were together on the night Rachel was killed. Naturally, when the working theory points to the last person to have sex with Rachel (semen was found in Rachel’s body) being her killer, it does not bode well for Jack.

Jack is not the killer. The primary suspect is never the killer in this kind of story, so this is not a big spoiler. Understandably, Jack looks elsewhere to find the real killer. This brings him and Priya to Clyde (Chris Bauer), Rachel’s husband. It becomes immediately clear that Clyde knew about Rachel’s sexual escapades. Apparently, they had a deal. Jack still doubts him. Clyde is warned not to call Rachel’s missing phone, not to drain the battery. But Clyde does that anyway, seemingly wanting to drain the battery. Of course, Jack finds the missing phone in his own car, given that it was the place he and Rachel had sex in.

How Did Anna and Rachel Become Friends?

His & Hers (TV Mini Series 2026)

Parallel to the murder investigation, we see Jack and Anna reconnecting as the bickering old married couple. To complicate matters, both become aware of each other’s presence near Rachel at the time she was killed. We knew about Jack. Anna, it appears, was visiting her dead daughter’s grave, which is near the place Jack and Rachel were that night.

The only middle ground Jack and Anna have is Anna’s ailing mother, Alice (Crystal Fox). Alice seems to be struggling with dementia. There have been incidents where she was found roaming the night streets, without any clothes on. Jack has been a help to her mother-in-law during the time Anna was missing, which is something Anna appreciates.

With secrets starting to reveal themselves, more layers start to peel off the mystery, as we reach towards the crux of the truth. The key event for this story seems to be an event from Anna’s school days. It appears Anna and Rachel were friends when they were at school together in Dahlonega. In a manner of speaking, of course. Rachel had had a core group of friends with Helen Wang and Zoe (Jack’s sister). Anna was taken under her wing by Rachel because Alice, who worked as a housekeeper in Rachel’s parents’ house, requested Rachel.

Rachel’s group was, to be blunt, a bunch of mean girls. Rachel, particularly, took pleasure in bullying other girls. One such victim was Catherine, a full-figured girl who often fell victim to Rachel’s nasty schemes. Zoe and Helen seemed to enjoy those. Anna seemed to be sympathetic to Catherine, but she was often subdued by her three new friends. It is, however, clear that something drastically bad had happened on Anna’s sixteenth birthday, which is the reason Rachel was killed. And Helen would also be killed.

What Happened to Catherine?

Priya starts to suspect Jack, and Anna is forced to take Richard’s offer to stay at his house, as their hotel reservations get cancelled. This is the moment we arrive at the truth. We see the killer strike again. This time, Zoe is killed. Only Anna seems to be remaining, and she is going to Lexy Jones’ house. By now, we have already started to guess it.

The vivacious Lexy Jones is none other than Catherine. It appears Lexy and Richard orchestrated the whole thing to take revenge on the four of her tormentors. However, there is a minor twist. Catherine/Lexy is not as innocent as she seemed. In fact, she was a killer already. She killed her elder sister by emptying her inhaler because her elder sister was teasing her about her looks. So, even though Anna did not actually torment her like Rachel, Lexy seems to have marked her for death.

What Happens to Anna and Jack?

Anna calls Jack, who, at that time, has just discovered Zoe’s death. Anna manages to send him the location and the information about Catherine being Lexy and the killer, just before Lexy and Richard attack her. Anna manages to lock Richard in a separate room. However, Lexy overpowers Anna, and the two grapple and fall onto the coffee table.

As Lexy manages to get Anna’s gun (although it was empty), Jack jumps in front of Anna to save her from the bullet, which never comes (because the gun was empty). Priya, who was tailing Jack as the chief suspect, arrives and shoots straight into Lexy’s head. Lexy dies. Richard continues to protest, but he is arrested as a co-conspirator.

Police find evidence implicating Lexy as the killer of Rachel, Helen, and Zoe. Jack and Anna reunite. A year passes. It appears Anna is pregnant with another child. Jack and Anna have also adopted Meg. Anna has got her old job as the main anchor of WSK TV News. Jack is doing well, too. They arrive at Dahlonega to visit Alice. Alice also appears to be improving, as a caregiver has been appointed for her.

Who Is the Actual Killer?

As Anna looks happily at her family—Jack, Meg, and Alice—enjoying themselves on the porch, she finds a letter addressed to her on the table. This letter, the content of which was read to us in various episodes, seems to be the confession of the actual killer. The content was read in Anna’s voice, because she was the recipient of the letter. Initially, it felt like Lexy had written it to her. However, as Anna keeps on reading, the chilling truth emerges.

Firstly, the truth of Anna’s sixteenth birthday. It was not Catherine who was tormented that day. Yes, Rachel, with encouragement from Helen and Zoe, called a few boys. Rachel, in exchange for money, gave these boys the opportunity to rape her favorite subject. And it was not Catherine who was raped. It was Anna. The video was present in Anna’s locker. Now, although Anna had every reason to murder her three old ‘friends,’ it was actually Alice who did that.

When Anna went missing after the death of her child, Alice blamed herself, as she was babysitting the child that day. Alice, missing her daughter every day, started to watch her old videos. And she came across that fateful day’s video. She saw the footage of her daughter being raped due to the schemes of Rachel, Helen, and Zoe.

She planned the entire thing: to take revenge and reunite Jack and Anna. Her ‘dementia’ was a ruse to get a convenient alibi. She killed Rachel and walked to the street naked. Nobody suspected an old black woman, who used to be a housekeeper. Her housekeeper skills came in handy as she used to have keys to Helen and Zoe’s places.

Apart from revenge, she murdered Zoe to ensure Meg gets adopted by Jack and Anna. A daughter for a daughter. She also planted all the evidence at Lexy’s house. Because, although Lexy (then Catherine) did not plan for the rape of Anna, she left her without throwing a customary second glance. Alice hoped for a prison sentence for Lexy. But Priya proved to be a much better shot than Alice had hoped for. The story started with the maternal love that Anna had, and it ends with the maternal love that Alice cherishes.
