Hold Your Breath (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“Hold Your Breath” opens in 1930s Oklahoma with Margaret in the wheat fields. Suddenly, the wheat fields become a desert as Margaret’s children call out to her. Gasping for breath, Margaret wakes up. That night, Margaret prays, asking the lord to keep the storms at bay while also being grateful for her husband Henry’s job.

As Margaret prays to the lord, asking him to harm herself instead of her children, we see Margaret’s daughter Ada’s tombstone. Since Henry has left town for work, Margaret raises Rose and a deaf Ollie alone. After dinner, Margaret asks Rose to lock her room door before sleeping. Once Margaret leaves, Rose tells Ollie the story of the grey man.

According to the story, the Grey Man succumbs to the flames and merges into the sand. If people don’t wear a mask, they can breathe in the grey man, and the grey man will make the person do terrible things. Hearing the story, Ollie gets scared and wonders if Margaret has breathed in the grey man. However, Rose comforts Ollie, saying Margaret has always been upset about Ada. Hence, Margaret doesn’t sleep well.

Margaret visits Esther (a family member). She is going through hell because of dust that has affected her son, Thomas, who coughs uncontrollably. Watching Thomas suffer, Margaret cleans her house every chance she gets so Rose and Ollie can be safe. Since Margaret can’t sleep well, she takes sleeping pills that give her nightmares.

Why is Margaret worried about her daughter’s health?

Soon, Esther decides to leave town as the dust affects her children. Margaret suggests Esther keep her kids indoors and clean the house constantly. Despite Margaret’s warning of the dust storms, Esther leaves with her children. The dust storms get nasty, and Ollie claims she has seen the grey man.

Margaret takes away the book and tells Ollie that the grey man is not real. To put the kids to bed, Margaret tells them how the area around them used to be lush with crops growing. In the middle of the night, Rose wakes Margaret, saying someone is outside the door. When Margaret checks, no one is in the house or the barn. The next day, the villagers and the sheriff find Esther’s older son Jacob’s body buried in the sand. Thankfully, Thomas is alive. Right next to Jacob is Esther. When the sheriff brings Esther up, the villagers think she is dead, but soon, Esther coughs up some sand and is rescued.

While the other villagers comfort Esther to believe in God, Margaret believes in taking action. Soon, Rose’s nose starts bleeding, so Margaret takes her to the doctor. The bleeding is also caused because of the dry air. When Margaret starts to worry too much, the doctor asks Margaret to buy some masks so the kids don’t breathe in the dust and sand.

Can Wallace heal Rose’s ailment?

Now, paranoia kicks in, and Margaret seals every inch of the room where the kids sleep. Seeing her mother like this, Rose is scared that Margaret will stop sleeping again. The next day, Margaret and Rose argue because of the open barn door. At the same time, Margaret is mad at Ollie for talking about the grey man. As Margaret is tending to the cow, she asks Rose to throw in the hay, assuming she is on the first floor. When Rose does not answer, Margaret gets on top as she sees shadows and does not find Rose.

Now Margaret believes Ollie did see something in the barn. With a rifle, Margaret heads to the barn, and from the floorboard emerges a man. The man says his name is Wallace and that he knows Henry. Even though Wallace knows the names of Henry’s family, Margaret asks him to leave. At that moment, Rose’s nose starts to bleed.

Wallace promises to heal Rose, but he has to touch her. Wallace touches Rose’s forehead, instantly curing her, but he is exhausted. After Wallace promises to stay out of anyone’s sight, Margaret lets him stay. Furthermore, Wallace comes up with the idea of feeding the cow. The next day, Wallace is outside in the rain. It is a miracle, as it hasn’t rained for a long time.

Who is Wallace?

Bad news awaits as Margaret visits Esther. The sheriff informs Margaret that Esther is not looking after Thomas. Margaret tries to explain Esther’s duties, but she is shocked when she sees bed sores on Esther’s back. The sheriff offers to take Thomas with him so he is cared for. Seeing Thomas leave, Esther is furious and curses Margaret, saying she will be like Esther.

Meanwhile, Margaret gets to know the self-proclaimed preacher Wallace. At dinner, the family receives a letter from Henry. After a few words for their daughter, Henry wants Margaret to read the next part alone. After reading the letter, Margaret picks up her rifle and asks Wallace to put Ollie down. Using sign language, Margaret asks Ollie to duck, and Margaret fires. In the letter, Henry mentions that a preacher had stolen his jacket and money, which he wanted to send to the family. When Margaret fires, Ollie escapes, but Wallace takes the letter and burns it. Without the letter, the villagers would think Margaret has lost her sanity.

After Margaret kicks Wallace out, Margaret spends the entire night outside. Suddenly, Margaret hears Ollie and walks towards Ollie. Near Ollie, Esther comes up and is about to slash the girl’s throat. So Margaret starts screaming. It is daytime, and Rose is in front of Margret. The next night, Margaret hears Wallace’s voice, so she checks every room in the house.

What is the truth behind the mysterious happenings at Margaret’s home?

The daughters from the room scream for Margaret to help as there is a fire. Somehow, Margaret breaks open the door and puts out the fire. Now Margaret believes all the madness to be Wallace’s doing. Furthermore, Margaret thinks the grey man is Wallace. Suddenly, there is a knock on the door, and it is Esther, worried about Margaret and the girls.

Before leaving, Esther invites Margaret to attend the dance that night. Even though Margaret and her family are not in the mood for it, they decide to participate in the dance to show people they are doing okay. Suddenly, Margaret hears Rose choking, so she rushes to help Rose. However, Rose tells Margaret that she is laughing and not choking. After the incident, Rose does not want to go to the dance. Margaret insists they attend the dance. At the dance, Margaret’s leg starts bleeding, and she is about to leave when Margaret bumps into Esther. Alongside Esther is a Reverend, but Margaret thinks the man is Wallace.

Is Margaret truly possessed?

Seeing a deranged Margret, Esther asks to be brought by a healer named Everett. However, Margaret is sure it is Wallace. When no one believes Margret, Rose tells them Wallace’s story is real. Margaret and Rose talk at home, and Margaret sews her hands as she stitches on the cloth. Suddenly, there is a loud knock on the door, so Margaret heads out with a rifle.

Outside, there is a thick fog, and Margaret hears Wallace and Esther. As a black figure appears, Margaret shoots, and the figure melts and mixes with the sand. When Rose questions if it was Wallace, Margaret says it was, but he merged with the sand like a grey man. Later that night, Rose hears some noise and gets out to find Margaret scratching on the wall, apologizing to Ada. In that state, Margaret heads out again with a rifle and sees Wallace approaching Margret.

As Margaret points her rifle at Wallace, she hears Rose asking Margaret to put the rifle down. Suddenly, Margaret leaves the trance state and sees Rose standing before Margaret. Immediately, Rose tells Margaret that she is doing things while asleep. Strange words from Margaret scare Rose, so Rose pushes Margaret and runs inside the house.

Hold Your Breath (2024) Movie Ending Explained:

Has Margaret’s descent into madness reached a point of no return?

When Margaret enters the house, she sees Rose has left from the other door. Outside, Rose is trying to make Ollie understand the situation and take her away. In the process, Ollie pushes Rose, and she falls on a dead Esther. As Rose cries, seeing Esther, Margaret takes Ollie and heads inside the house. Inside, Margaret catches hold of Rose, and she says that Margaret has killed Esther. At the same time, there is a knock on the door, and Ollie opens it. When the sheriff enters the room, Rose says Margaret is not fit. Once the kids leave, the sheriff hugs Margaret and tells her he will take the girls until Henry arrives. Suddenly, Margaret stabs the sheriff with a knife.

Even though Rose sees the sheriff’s state, she can’t do much as there is a storm outside. So Rose picks up the knife and heads to talk to Margret. Now, Rose pretends to be normal with Margret. Margaret tells Rose they should all be with Ada and starts breaking her sleeping tablets. After a while, Rose lies to Margret, saying that Ollie ran into the storm.

Did Margaret’s Descent into Madness Foreshadow Her Transformation into the Grey Man?

Margaret ties one end of a rope to the doorknob and the other around her neck and runs into the storm. As soon as Margaret goes the distance, Rose cuts the rope. Unable to see anything or go anywhere, Margaret chokes on the dust and dies. In the last scene, we see Rose and Ollie on a train, seeing green pastures of land. However, Rose can still see some dust granules even in a lush area.

The film cleverly uses the Oklahoma Dust Bowl to tell this horror tale. The story employs dust storms and famine as natural elements to depict Margret’s decline. Ultimately, it seems like Margaret has become the grey man (in the form of the dust granules around Rose and Ollie), unwilling to leave her two daughters alone. As Margaret starts losing sense of what is real and what isn’t, Rose takes charge and becomes Ollie’s protector.

Every dialogue or scene in the beginning was a clue to what was to come, starting with the grey man, then the drifter, and even Thomas’s illness. All these reasons are woven into Margret’s story, making her mad. Margaret was inflicted with paranoia because of loneliness, famine, and dust storms. Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything surprising in the story throughout, as it was expected that Margaret would go wild and do horrific things.
