Kuyang (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
In “Kuyang,” Bimo’s world teeters on the brink as he stares at his dwindling bank balance, the looming threat of unpaid EMIs casting a long shadow over his life. He looks very concerned while Sri, his wife, tries to lock the door but fails. Bimo helps her and tells her to stay because he does not want Sri to face any trouble. But Sri is determined to tag along with Bimo to a new place as she is fed up with everything. The reason, however, remains unknown. But since Bimo acts apologetically for his earlier actions, it seems like Sri does not trust him to let him go alone in the village.
It can be because of Bimo’s gambling habit. Anyway, the car comes to take them to the boat that will leave in the morning. They enter the forest. Suddenly, Sri sees the flying head of a woman who is on fire. When Sri tells Bimo and the driver about it, the driver seems to be denying the existence of such a thing. Soon after, when Sri feels nauseous, they stop the car and suddenly see a coffin coming out of the jungle. The driver drops some chicken eggs in front of it and runs away. We see that a hand comes out of the coffin for the eggs.
What does Bimo Learn about Tambi Nyai and Bue Alang?
The following day, when they reach the boat, the guide, who has been traveling with them all along, tells them that when someone who used to do black magic is dead, their coffin is not buried. Instead, it is hanged from a tree inside the forest. It is a ritual, and sometimes, the coffin comes in search of food. The actual reason remains unknown as soon as the village secretary and Tingen, one of the teachers of the school where Bimo is headed, meet with them.
They bid Bimo and Sri goodbye as they head toward their destination when the driver and the guide tell Tingen about the flying head, which is known as Kuyang. Tingen then says that the couple is about to face a lot of these things up ahead because Sri is ‘the woman of another island.’ The way Tingen says this sounds very eerie, as if some prophecy is about to unfold. Later, Bimo notices that the village’s secretary, who is their guide now, looks at Sri in a very bizarre manner.
Later, while on their way to the school, inside the forest, Sri and Bimo meet with a strangely old-looking couple, and when they finally reach the school, principal Kasno tells them that the old couple is Tambi Nyai and Bue Alang. The village had faced a huge flood. Since then, the disease has taken away many young lives. The villagers think that since Tambi Nyai and Bue Alang practice black magic and they have lost their child, they cursed the village because of it.
How does Mina Uwe Save Sri from Being Possessed?
Kasno tells Sri to join in as a teacher along with Bimo so that rather than just sitting inside the house all day, she can also indulge herself in some activities. Kasno also tells them about a ritual of giving away some food around the house. On the first day of her teaching, Sri witnesses numerous dead students inside the classroom. She tells about it to Bimo, who does not pay much attention to this. The following day, a student named Mayang is possessed by some demon. Bimo tries to save her.
Soon after, they find Sri closed inside a classroom. She faces something which can not be seen by others. Bimo and Kasno break the door and rescue Sri from there. Sri is sick, and in her nightmare, later that night, she sees a Kuyang and screams in the middle of the night. Bimo, on the other hand, experiences something as well. Meanwhile, on the first night of their arrival, Tambi Nyai had already visited them and touched Sri’s stomach. Bimo feels that all this is happening because of it.
The following day, they visit the village head’s home, where Mina Uwe, a healer of the village, meets Sri and Bimo. She says that Tambi Nyai has done some black magic on Sri, but she will take care of her. Soon after, Sri starts behaving very strangely. Later, it is seen that she is possessed by some demonic entity. Mina Uwe somehow manages to calm herself for the time being as the whole village gets surrounded by black clouds. Bimo and Sri come back to the house, where Bimo meets with Tingen, who tells him not to leave the house at night, no matter what happens.
What does Bimo learn from Tambi Nyai?
Bimo wants to send Sri away the same night. But Tingen tells him that the boat is not there yet, so they have to wait until morning. The following morning, when Bimo goes to the boat, he sees that the bridge to the boat is on fire, as people say someone intentionally did that. Later, Bimo realizes that Sri has disappeared, and along with Kasno and others, he starts looking for Sri. With Mayang’s help, Bimo finds Sri’s scarf along with the village secretary’s bracelet.
Bimo goes to the secretary’s house to confront him. Mina Uwe reaches there to stop them from fighting. Soon, they realize that Tingen is the culprit who abducted Sri because he is a follower of Tambi Nyai. They start looking for Sri inside the forest. When Bimo finds her, they bring her to a cabin inside the forest. Mina Uwe gives a knife to Bimo, saying that when Tambi Nyai’s head is detached from her body (the head, along with the heart, flies around, which is known as Kuyang), Bimo must put an end to her. Meanwhile, Mina successfully takes out the protection Tambi gave inside Sri’s stomach.
Bimo, Kasno, and the Village head go to finish the job. At the same time, the village secretary stays with Mino Uwe as she tries some rituals on Sri. However, when Bimo is about to kill Tambi, she tells him that they have been chasing the wrong end throughout. Tambi has always been trying to protect Sri from Mina Uwe, who needs the woman from another island’s fetus to become a full-fledged demon. Tambi takes her Kuyang form. She asks Bimo to take care of Sri while she deals with Mina Uwe, who is also capable of taking the Kuyang form.
