Mortal Kombat (2021) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

What is the movie ‘Mortal Kombat’ about?

Mortal Kombat (2021 film) is set across two timelines, one in the past and one in the present.

In Japan, in the year 1617, a man named Hanzo Hasashi goes out to collect water. When he comes back, he finds a tragic scene. His wife and his son have been frozen to death. His home has been attacked and destroyed. The Shirai Ryu ninja clan, which he is part of, has been killed by the Chinese Lin Kuei assassin clan. The attack is led by a cryomancer named Bi-Han. Hanzo fights back and kills the attackers. After this, he faces Bi-Han in a battle. The fight is brutal, and Hanzo is badly wounded. Before dying, he tells Bi-Han to remember his face. He also tries to reach his hidden infant daughter. Hanzo then dies from his injuries. After his death, his soul is sent to the Netherrealm. Later, the god of thunder Raiden takes Hanzo’s baby daughter away to keep her safe.

Many years later, in 2021, Earthrealm is in danger. The realm of Outworld has already defeated Earthrealm in nine Mortal Kombat tournaments. If Earthrealm loses the tenth tournament, Outworld will take control of it completely. There is also an ancient prophecy that says the “blood of Hanzo Hasashi” will bring together a new group of Earthrealm champions who will stop Outworld from winning. A sorcerer from Outworld named Shang Tsung sends his warriors to kill Earthrealm champions before the tenth tournament can begin. These champions are people marked with a dragon symbol.

In the present day, an MMA fighter named Cole Young lives with his family. They are suddenly attacked by Bi-Han, who is now known as Sub-Zero. A Special Forces Major named Jackson Briggs arrives and saves Cole and his family. He tells them to find his partner, Sonya Blade. Jax stays behind to fight Sub-Zero, but he loses both of his arms in the battle. Cole goes to Sonya’s hideout. Sonya is questioning a captured Australian mercenary named Kano. Jax and Sonya have already been investigating the existence of Mortal Kombat. While they are there, they are attacked by Shang Tsung’s assassin, Syzoth. Kano kills Syzoth with help from Cole and Sonya.

After this, they travel to Raiden’s temple. There they meet Earthrealm champions Liu Kang and Kung Lao, along with Raiden himself. Raiden is not happy with the newcomers at first. Jax is also found there, because Raiden has rescued him and given him mechanical arms. Shang Tsung tries to attack the temple, but Raiden protects it with a shield that blocks entry. Cole, Kano, Sonya, Liu Kang, and Kung Lao begin training. They are trying to unlock their “arcana,” which is a special power that each dragon mark bearer has.

During training, Kano becomes the first to unlock his arcana. He gains the ability to shoot laser beams from his eye. He is very happy about this. Cole tries to unlock his arcana, but he cannot do it. Because of this, Raiden sends Cole back to his family. At this point, it is revealed that Cole is a descendant of Hanzo Hasashi. Shang Tsung gathers more fighters for an attack. One of them is Kabal, who used to be Kano’s ally. Kabal convinces Kano to betray the others and help sabotage Raiden’s shield around the temple.

Mortal Kombat (2021) Movie Ending Explained:

What is the real meaning of Mortal Kombat’s ending?

During the battle that follows, Jax finally unlocks his arcana. He gains superhuman strength and his mechanical arms become much stronger. At the same time, Cole’s family is attacked by a giant creature named Goro. Cole is forced to face this danger. At this moment, he finally unlocks his own arcana. He gains armor that can absorb energy from physical attacks. He also gets a pair of tonfas as weapons. With these new powers, Cole fights Goro and kills him. After this, he goes back to help the other fighters defend the temple.

Raiden teleports Cole and the other Earthrealm fighters to a safe place called the Void. This place exists between realms. Even then, Sub-Zero tries to stop them. During this moment, Kung Lao saves Cole from Sub-Zero. However, Shang Tsung takes Kung Lao’s soul. Cole then makes a plan. He suggests that they force Outworld’s champions into one-on-one fights before they all join together to defeat Sub-Zero. The group agrees. Raiden gives Cole Hanzo Hasashi’s kunai, which still has Hanzo’s blood on it. Then Raiden sends Cole and the others to their targets so they can fight.

As the battles continue, Sonya kills Kano. After killing him, she receives his dragon mark and gains the ability to shoot energy blasts from her arms. Sub-Zero later captures Cole’s family and uses them as bait to draw Cole into a one-on-one fight. In this final battle, Cole struggles against Sub-Zero and is overpowered. He then uses Hanzo’s kunai. The blood on the kunai is released, and this brings Hanzo back as the vengeful spirit known as Scorpion. Scorpion recognizes Cole as his descendant. He helps Cole fight Sub-Zero. Together, they defeat Sub-Zero and save Cole’s family. After the fight, Scorpion thanks Cole for freeing him. He asks Cole to take care of the Hasashi bloodline. Then Scorpion leaves.

At that moment, Raiden, the other champions, and Shang Tsung arrive. Shang Tsung threatens that next time he will bring full armies instead of individual fighters. Raiden sends him away and says that he will prepare new warriors for the next tournament. He also tells his current champions to go and find more fighters to join them. At the end, Cole leaves for Los Angeles. He goes there to find the martial arts film star Johnny Cage.
