Munjya” is a 2024 film written by Niren Bhatt, Yogesh Chandekar, and Tushar Ajgaonkar and directed by Aditya Sarpotdar. It stars Sharvari as Bela, Abhay Verma as Bittu, Mona Singh as Pammi, Sathyaraj as Elvis, Suhas Joshi as Getta, and more. The film revolves around Bittu, who is threatened by one of his own ancestors and wishes to be reunited with his childhood love.

There is just the right amount of humor and terror. Only a few movies have managed this. Bravo to the filmmakers and producers! Abhay Verma and Sharwari Wagh, who play the leads, are outstanding. All three of these actors—Ajay Purkar, Mona Singh, and Suhas Joshi—have done an excellent job. For those who have loved lighter fares like “Stree” and “Ruhi,” “Munjya” is an excellent choice.

Munjya (2024) Plot Summary & Film Synopsis:

How Does Gotya Turn into Munjya?

“Munjya” is the tale of a boy, Gotya, who grew up in Konkan during the 1950s with an intense, almost obsessive love for his neighbor, Munni. Gotya’s feelings for her run so deep that he even tries to sabotage Munni’s engagement by spiking her fiancé’s tea with rat poison, hoping to break them apart. But despite all his desperate efforts, Munni ends up marrying the man while Gotya is left watching, helpless, and heartbroken. Fueled by anger, Gotya swears to get Munni back, no matter what it takes. In a reckless frenzy, he heads to Chetukwadi, a small isle, to perform a dark ritual.

Fully convinced that a ritual will bring Munni back to him, Gotya is willing to go to any lengths—even to the point of sacrificing his own sister’s life to make it happen. Things take a turn for Gotya when he accidentally hits his head on a rock and ends up dead. His final rites are performed, but there’s an old belief that if a boy dies within ten days of his head-shaving ceremony, his spirit could turn into a vengeful demon or Munjya. And sure enough, the worst happens—Gotya’s restless soul wakes up, once again vowing that nothing will stop him from claiming Munni as his own.

What Happened to Bittu’s Father?

Our main character, Bittu, dreams of becoming a top stylist. He’s enrolled in a bachelor’s course and has a major crush on his neighbor, Bela. Sadly, Bela set her sights on someone else, her foreign friend, Kuba. She’s even named her Zumba studio after him. Meanwhile, Bittu keeps having these strange blackouts and daydreams, and he feels like something is calling him back to his village. For years, Bittu’s mom and grandma have kept him far away from that village, though they’ve never really explained why. We get hints that it has something to do with Gotya and his evil spirit. The last time Bittu’s mom, Pammi, visited the village, her husband mysteriously drowned while planning to sell off Chetukwadi to start a new life in the city with Pammi.

When Bittu learns about the cursed place, he can’t resist heading there to uncover the truth about his father’s death. Once there, he encounters Gotya, or should we say Munjya, whose spirit has been trapped, waiting for years for one of his descendants to return so he can possess them and finish what he started. It turns out that Bittu’s grandma, Gita, is Gotya’s sister, who he tried to sacrifice sixty years ago. Gita tries desperately to protect Bittu, but Gotya is too powerful. He kills Bittu and binds himself to Bittu’s body, ready to carry out his evil plans.

A still from “Munjya” (2024)

Even after Bittu returns to the city, he can’t escape Munjya. This is because Munjya has been freed from the tree and is now bound to Bittu, haunting his every step. Munjya demands that Bittu find Munni, or he’ll start killing random people. Bittu is freaked out, so he shares his problem with his friend Spielberg, who at first thinks Bittu’s lost it and maybe even started doing drugs.

But Spielberg quickly changes his tune when he realizes Munjya is all too real and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Bittu digs deep and finally tracks down Munni, who now goes by Ashwini Nadkarni. Also, Bela, Bittu’s crush, is Ashwini’s granddaughter. Since Ashwini is too old, Munjya decides to go with Bela instead. He orders Bittu to take Bela to Chetukwadi and sacrifice her so Munjya’s spirit can finally be set free.

Bittu and Spielberg’s final stand against Munjya

Since hurting Bela is out of the question, Bittu and Spielberg seek out a priest who claims he’s the real-life inspiration behind Indiana Jones. This priest is a Munjya expert, who, according to folklore, is a sort of a Bramharakshas. The priest even claims that he has taken down four of these evil spirits to date. He gives Bittu some tips on how to get rid of Munjya once and for all. For Munjya to marry Bela, he needs a physical form.

So, Munjya must possess a goat to carry out the wedding ritual. But if they can slay the goat before the ceremony is finished, Munjya’s spirit will be destroyed for good. With no way to explain the truth to Bela, Bittu and Spielberg devise a plan. They convince her to go to Chetukwadi under the pretense of shooting an ad film for her new Zumba studio. Munja is hell-bent on making sure that his plan doesn’t go awry this time. When Kuba comes to the village and asks Bela to marry her, Munjya attacks Kuba, rendering him impotent.

Munjya (2024) Movie Ending Explained:

Will Munjya’s Curse Ever End?

On the day of the ritual, Bittu spikes Bela’s drink with some local liquor to ensure she won’t remember a thing. The plan is simple. The moment Munjya’s spirit enters the goat, Bittu will slay it and end his reign of terror. Sadly, things take a wild turn, and Munjya’s spirit ends up in Bela’s body, while Bela’s spirit gets trapped in that of a goat. Furious at this betrayal, Munjya decides to kill everyone except Bela. What follows is a chaotic chase and a not-so-literal tug of war. Munjya eventually takes over another body and drags Bela to Chetukwadi to offer her as a human sacrifice. In a last-ditch effort, Bittu manages to switch Munja’s spirit back into the cursed tree and set it on fire, seemingly destroying it for good.

But, of course, this is far from over. In the final scenes, we see a group of people cutting down the cursed tree, only to hear Munjya’s voice calling out to Bittu, hinting that he’s not gone for good and will return for revenge. It looks like a sequel might be on the horizon because, to be honest, Bollywood comedy horrors always seem to get one!
