Only Murders In The Building (Season 3) Episode 9: The sitzprobe in Sitzprobe saw the returning Detective Williams zero in on Dickie. Unable to see her son in trouble, Meryl Streep’s character Loretta took the fall and confessed. It is not over yet though, with Only Murders In The Building planting a rather telling question: what motivated Loretta to take the fall? Did something Donna say to her in the washroom trigger something? Does the producer plant evidence on Dickie to protect her own son (Cliff) and know that Loretta will step in? This may be a wild guess, but it is something to think about. Why would a show present a resolution with two episodes left?

Besides the murderer of Ben Glenroy being caught and the case being closed, another serious incident will be the focus of Thirty. What is the state of Oliver Putnam after he sees his leading lady arrested? What we do know is that the trio joined forces before the conclusion of Sitzprobe, implying that Charles and Mabel will work together. Will Theo and Tobert also feature in the sleuths’ activities over the next two episodes?

Only Murders In The Building (Season 3) Episode 9 ‘Thirty’ Recap:

Mabel has a dream where she is giving birth to triplets, two of whom turn out to be Oliver and Charles. Oliver awakens Mabel and tells her he is cleared to go home. She sounds stunned as the heart attack happened just five days ago. Oliver, though, is eager to get home as Death Rattle Dazzle opens in just about 48 hours and is without a leading lady. The group returns to Charles’s apartment at The Arconia and stares at the murder board. Oliver wants to save Loretta and overshares about how she is the love of his life. Charles and Mabel then respond to Oliver, telling him they didn’t watch the skillfully recorded police interviews. They waited because they wanted to watch it with him.

Mabel looks at the board and begins the case recap. Charles continues, but Oliver talks about the trio’s reunion before bringing in the boom mic. He suggests a line that becomes the lead sentence of the new episode of the podcast Only Murders In The Building. Mabel suggests they question Dickie without revealing Loretta is his mother. Joy’s wedding dress comes to Charles’s house. Dickie does not deny that Ben did not steal CoBro from him. He reveals that Ben had five whores, for whom he reserved opening night tickets. Dickie shows them an image that leads Mabel to conclude he wasn’t at The Arconia. Dickie senses they are onto him and elects to call his lawyer. The trio believes he is telling the truth and concludes Loretta took the fall for someone else. Oliver carries a ladder to the brothel called ‘Snitches get Stitches,’ as he believes no one stops a man with a ladder. The guy behind the counter does not buy the ladder story or even Charles’ sob story. However, he lets them through, and they see five tailors. It is not a brothel but a sewing shop.

After Oliver again embarrasses everyone with his choice of words, Mabel explains and turns to leave. But one of them comes to the trio and says they knew “Benny.” They tell the trio that Ben used sewing, particularly the Thursday sewing circle sessions, to keep him away from street drugs. The last time they saw him was on the opening night of Death Rattle Dazzle. Ben and the five women were sewing handkerchiefs. The group of women plays a voice note from Ben that came just seconds before opening night. Oliver gives them a ladder, and the group heads back to the building. Charles brings in the Ben Glenroy murder time board, and they watch the secretly recorded interrogation scenes. From Cliff’s chat, the group learns Ben was fasting before the show. In Dickie’s conversation, they see Loretta urging him to leave Ben Glenroy.

Only Murders In The Building (Season 3) Episode 9 Ending Explained
A still from Only Murders In The Building (Season 3) Episode 9 named “Thirty”

In the flashback, Dickie and Loretta are discussing Dickie’s resignation as Glenroy’s manager. Ben walks up and looks stunned at that. He calls it a betrayal and says Dickie is a “lousy manager” and an even “lousier brother.” Ben admits that although Dickie created CoBro, he is CoBro. The timeline proceeds to the situation with Ben and Loretta at the onset lighthouse, where Charles punches Ben. Donna’s video is next, where they see her recount the opening night conversation with Ben. She walks him to his room, where he snatches Tobert’s camera and tells him to “fuck off.” They watch the video from Tobert’s camera and try to figure out who he was speaking to that day. Mabel says that everyone is accounted for. Oliver tries to join the dots, but Mabel suggests they may not be able to solve it in time to free Loretta. The group learns Mabel turned 30, but before they can wish her, Howard walks in, claiming he solved the shredder mystery. He hands Oliver a paper, and the director sees two words that draw him to a conclusion, i.e., Maxine Spear. It is her review of Death Rattle Dazzle, where she claims Ben is the weak link of the show. They find a motive with someone trying to save the play and their career. Who is this one person?

Only Murders In The Building (Season 3) Episode 9 ‘Thirty’ Ending Explained:

Who does Ben address before heading to the stage?

Charles and Oliver trick Mabel and sing for her with a type of cake. She makes a wish, and Oliver proceeds to dig in and talk to the food. Mabel sees the light as she remembers the lines Ben said while in his dressing room. She realizes that Ben’s, “You’re not supposed to be here. We both know you’re bad. God, I want you. I want you so fucking bad. We both know you’ll ruin my career, and I’m gonna like it,” was him speaking to the cookie. Ben Glenroy smells the cookie and eats the whole thing. He then calls himself “disgusting” and a “fucking pig.” The actor proceeds to write those two words, using Joy’s lipstick, on his dressing room mirror.

Who gave Ben the cookies on opening night?

On opening night, Ben receives the cookies from someone who wants to save their investment. Is this an investment of time (actors) or money (producers)? This someone had gotten their hands on Maxine Spear’s review of the play “Not Singing.” As said, someone, based on the themes of the season, wishes to save their child, and they decide to get rid of Ben Glenroy. The killer knew Ben’s weakness and planted the cookie in his dressing room. However, she even sprinkled poison on it. It was not Loretta. The person who sprinkled poison on Ben Glenroy’s cookies is Donna.

How does the trio sneak into the court?

When Charles, Mabel, and Oliver learn the killer’s identity, they look to save Loretta. Oliver is most eager to get this done, but they wonder how to get to the arraignment in 20 minutes. Mabel decides to wear Joy’s bride’s dress as no one stops a bride. The trio races to the courtroom, where they see Loretta about to take her seat. Oliver runs forward and urges her not to plead guilty. The podcasters then say they know who did it, and they can prove it. She trusts them but hints at having already gone too far down the road. When Loretta asks who did it, ominous music plays as Mabel takes Oliver’s name. The camera points to Donna sitting in the court. She rises from her seat as the quarter stares at her.

Will Charles, Mabel, and Oliver save Loretta and let Donna face justice?
