On the other hand, Solomon desperately sought funding for his new venture but to no avail.  Eventually, Solomon learned a detail about Han Guem-ja’s place in Japan that he could utilize to salvage Katsu Abe’s prospects. Now, the third episode shows Sunja, Kyunghee, and the children relocate with Hansu’s help. Pachinko (Season 2) Episode 3 “Chapter Eleven” Recap:

The third episode of Pachinko’s second season follows Sunja (Minha Kim) right after her husband, Isak’s (Steve Sang-Hyun Noah) unfortunate death. She and her family hope to follow their rituals to send their farewell. However, because of an impending bomb threat, they have to flee Osaka almost immediately. Sunja doesn’t even get a chance to mourn Isak’s loss. Then, she tells her family about Hansu’s (Lee Min-ho) plan for a swift escape. Kyunghee (Jung Eun-chae) wonders whether they should go to the shelter as other people. She also worries that she is leaving her husband behind.

Sunja makes Kyunghee realize the dire nature of their situation. So, with Hansu’s friend, Kim Chang-ho’s (Kim Sungkyu) help, she prepares to leave with Noa (Kim Kang-Hoon), and young Mozasu (Carter Jeong). The crowds surround them as Sunja’s family travels through Hansu’s car. Soon, they manage to get out of Osaka. As they leave, Noa looks back at the city getting struck by explosives. Eventually, Sunja’s family reaches a dusty, makeshift shelter desolate farm. Hansu offers it as a temporary place for them to stay and leaves Chang-ho to help them with their immediate needs.

Hansu makes them realize the scope of the war and its impact on their home in Osaka. Because of this, Sunja and Kyunghee must consider the shelter their new home. Kyunghee complains about the dirt and lack of tidiness. Hansu realizes Kyunghee says it because she comes from a privileged upbringing that allowed her at least a decent place. He explains that there is no other option but to adjust to the way things are, at least for the time being.

Sunja’s New Life in 1945

Sunja doesn’t want Noa or Mozasu to know the truth about her & Hansu’s past relationship. She also realizes that she is now a widow like her mother. So, she does not want anything to jeopardize her son’s emotional well-being in his growing years. By June 1945, Sunja and Kyunghee got used to their new lives. They work with some Japanese women on a paddy field. These women talk ill of Sunja and how she isn’t forced to labour because of her bond with Hansu. Since they speak in Japanese, she does not understand it.

The Japanese women also claim their dominance over Chang-ho since he is Korean. Regardless, he is in charge of the work on the field. Subsequently, Noa and Mozasu also begin to acclimate to their new surroundings. Mozasu enjoys playing with chickens so much that he doesn’t wish to return to his life and school. As his older brother, Noa makes him realize that things will change sooner or later. Later, Hansu gifts them a television set and gifts Noa a few books to learn things beyond his school textbooks. Sunja sees it as Hansu’s attempt to connect with Noa and feels protective of him.

Solomon’s New Plans

In 1989, we see Sunja (Youn Yuh-jung) return to the supermarket where Solomon (Jin Ha) earlier stood up for himself against a bigoted man behind a counter. There, she meets an old Japanese man (Jun Kunimura), who was in the shop at the time of the incident. He apologizes for what happened and praises Solomon for showing the courage to stand up for himself. Later, she crosses paths with the same old man in a park. While feeding pigeons with him, she opens up about her past filled with ration lines and air raid drills. She believes Solomon should have had an easier life considering her turmoil. The man makes her realize that their journey is not always as linear as expected.

Solomon returns to the Shiffley’s office to meet his old colleague, Tom Andrews (Jimmi Simpson). He reveals that Han Geum-ja (Park Hye-jin) now wants to sell her house. Tom senses Solomon’s desperation with this deal, considering his recently failed attempt at funding. Solomon claims that Katsu Abe (Yoshio Maki) should be their mutual target. Besides, he knows why Tom was coerced to relocate from New York to Tokyo. Solomon offers a plan allowing Tom to leave Shiffley’s and start his own firm in the US. Since Tom wants to fix his life, he joins hands with Solomon.

While leaving the office, Solomon meets Naomi (Anna Sawai), his old colleague, who still works at the firm. He says she deserves to lead their operations but she will never be allowed to do so because of her racial identity. Upon hearing that, she follows him to the lift and sets a date with him.
