“Project UFO” (Original title: Projekt UFO, 2025), now streaming on Netflix, uses alien sightings as a sharp metaphor for political unrest in modern Poland. At its center is Sokolik, a man obsessed with the idea that extraterrestrials are hiding beneath the sea. Opposite him is Polgar, a slick television personality on the hunt for a sensational story. Their paths intersect when a local man, Kunik, claims he was abducted by aliens, setting off a chain of events that draws in Julia, a woman trying to untangle the madness, and Wera, a power player in high places.

The series explores how easily truth becomes elastic when ambition, fear, and desperation are in play. As each character chases their version of reality, Project UFO exposes a deep yearning in people to believe the unbelievable—especially when it serves a hidden need. Blending science fiction with sharp political commentary, the show challenges viewers to ask: what is real, and who is controlling the narrative? All this unfolds against the backdrop of a nation on the verge of transformation.

Project UFO (Projekt UFO, 2025) Episode 1 Recap:

The episode opens with a typed message on the screen. The 80s have begun, and party secretaries rule the country. Poland is developing rapidly. A group of agitators destabilizes the state. It is impossible to explain what is happening at the Polish-Soviet border. The typed message ends with a claim that the events that will unfold either happened or could have happened. In an electronic shop run by Sokolik, the power outside shuts down. Inside the house, Sokolik tries to make contact with something using a device. A while later, Sokolik bikes down near a lake and sees a green beam of light coming from within the lake towards the sky.

Immediately, Sokolik takes a picture of the phenomenon. The next day at the Farmer’s co-operative Warmia, the host introduces a TV host, Polgar, who has a show called Close Encounters that invites guests to talk about aliens and other supernatural beings. In this event, the host introduces Sokolik as a guest as well. The first person to speak is Sokolik, who believes aliens come from beneath the water bodies, seas, oceans, and lakes rather than space. According to Sokolik, if alien beings need to travel through space, they must be traveling at the speed of light, which defies the laws of physics. Sokolik mentions that aliens might be beneath the waters of the Bermuda Triangle, and Polgar scoffs at this.

Why is Sara by the lake?

To prove his claims, Sokolik shows the group the photo he captured of an Unidentified Submersible Object (USO). After the event, Polgar invites Sokolik to be a guest at Close Encounters. Before that happens, Sokolik needs to provide the originals of the photographs to Polgar so they can be tested for authenticity. After getting the original image, Polgar meets his trusted friend Kittel to test the pictures. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Poland has resigned, citing health reasons. The State Council will handle the country’s governance. The party will nominate the new Prime Minister. Soon, Kittel arrives with the news that the photo seems authentic, although the shadow is slightly off, suggesting the light source may have come from somewhere else.

During the show, Polgar lets Sokolik tell the world what he thinks about aliens. In the end, Polgar brings up the shadows in the image, making Sokolik look like a fool. A young girl, Sara, watches this show at home when suddenly she sees static on her TV. In a café, the party secretary’s wife, Wera, asks Polgar to meet her the next day as the secretary won’t be in town. The reason is that Wera has some information to share with Polgar. Elsewhere, Julia visits Sokolik to get her TV fixed. When Julia gets home, she can’t find her daughter, Sara. So, Julia heads outside and finds Sara by the lake. The reason Sara came out in the dark was that she saw some light in the water. However, Julia dismisses it.

Who was abducted by the aliens?

At Wera’s house, Polgar and Wera sleep together. Later, Wera says, the TV studio plans to move Polgar’s show to the morning and replace Close Encounters with a hypnotist’s show. Once Polgar is home, his wife Lenta suspects Polgar of cheating on her. At the TV studio, the President confirms Wera’s information.

The next day, Polgar meets Secretary Henryk Wierusz, as he has some information for Polgar. In Truskasy village, a man, Kunik, claims to have been abducted by USO aliens. So, Henryk asks Polgar to meet Kunik and make the best of the situation. Polgar calls Sokolik to meet Kunik and report back. At Kunik’s house, Sokolik asks fundamental questions and believes Kunik’s story seems genuine but mysterious. Furthermore, the house does not have a TV or a radio. At Kunik’s house, Julia does not take the story seriously.

Project UFO (Projekt UFO, 2025) Episode 2 Recap:

The episode opens with a flashback. In the flashback, a young Julia, Sokolik, and Sokolik’s younger brother, Antek, hang out. To catch fish, Sokolik has a device that needs to be held near the lake to kill the fish. The person holding the device is Antek. As soon as the device goes off, Antek goes missing. The police don’t find a body inside the lake. At present, Lenta checks Polgar’s belongings as soon as Polgar leaves home. One of the letters is addressed to Wera.

In a car, Henryk asks Polgar to be thorough with Kunik’s case. One piece of advice Henryk gives Polgar is that people want sensational news rather than science. So, Polgar needs to keep that in mind. In an optometrist clinic, Julia learns that her sight is getting worse. However, the doctor assures Julia that she won’t lose her job as he will give her a good recommendation. In Truskasy, Sokolik asks Kunik not to wash the clothes he wore on the day of the abduction. Unfortunately, Kunik has already washed it. It seems some secret service police visited Kunik and gave the same advice. With that, Sokolik asks Kunik to describe everything that took place on that day, and Sokolik records it.

Will Kunik agree to a lie detector test?

Meanwhile, Julia meets her colleagues and says they must focus on the Truskasy case as it seems genuine. By then, two Secret Service men talk to Julia and her colleagues, asking about Kunik. In a café somewhere, Lenta confronts Wera, hoping to see if Wera will reveal her affair with Polgar. To test it, Lenta brings the post given to Polgar by Henryk, which was addressed to Wera. Unfortunately, Wera does not know about this. So, Wera gets home and yells at Henryk for reading her posts. However, the government reads all the posts, and Wera is no exception. Learning about Kunik’s case, Wera worries Polgar may mess up, so Wera asks to go to Truskasy to make sure everything is okay.

In another restaurant, a couple asks to take a picture with Polgar. The man says that when he was young, he saw a UFO flying in the sky like a cigar. Back home, Sokolik plays Kunik’s recap of the events to Polgar, who is impressed. At Julia’s house, Sara sleepwalks, scaring Julia. The next day, Polgar is curious about how Mrs. Kunik knows about Polgar if there isn’t a radio or Television in their house. Mrs. Kunik says she visits her sister, and she watches the show there. Before proceeding further, Polgar asks Kunik if he is okay with taking a lie detector test and a Hypnosis test, to which Kunik agrees.

Why does Polgar destroy some tapes from Close Encounters?

As the group goes towards the site of the incident, they are interrupted by Julia. The police want to investigate it as well. At the site, Polgar finds an unusual rock. Later, Polgar and Sokolik discuss the case. While Polgar wants to verify every detail, Sokolik wants to believe Kunik as it supports his USO theory. However, Polgar believes that if Kunik’s story is true, it could be a UFO, as the unusual rock seems to hail from outer space. The next day, Polgar meets Henryk and tells him about Sokolik. Since Sokolik is an amateur, Henryk asks Polgar to destroy all of Sokolik’s Close Encounters episode tapes carefully.

At Julia’s house, Julia gets concerned as Sara has imaginary friends who reside by the lake. Meanwhile, Julia gets the news that she has been assigned to handle Kunik’s case from the police department. From afar, Wera watches Polgar. Once Sokolik is home, Julia will be waiting for him. The reason Julia believes Sara is acting odd is that there isn’t a TV at home, so Sara urges Sokolik to fix it. However, Julia angers Sokolik by not taking USO/UFO incidents seriously. At the TV Studio, Polgar finds the tapes of Sokolik’s Close Encounters episodes and destroys them. In the forest somewhere, Sokolik sees what seems to be a UFO. The object comes closer, and it is revealed that it is just a military tank.

Project UFO (Projekt UFO, 2025) Episode 3 Recap:

The episode opens with Kunik taking a lie detector test. For the test, Kunik narrates the whole story. It was an early morning, and Kunik took a shortcut through the forest. There, Kunik saw strange green creatures as tall as little kids. As Kunik approached the lake area, he saw an elevator come down from a UFO-like object. Kunik entered the vehicle through that elevator. Inside that vessel, there was water and dead birds. Suddenly, Kunik saw this alien creature. According to the lie detector test, Kunik is not lying. Now, Polgar wants another witness to add more legitimacy to the story. Likewise, they need to do other tests to prove Kunik is not an alcoholic or has any mental illness.

How does Wera convince Sokolik to reveal information about the Truskasy case?

The following action is to bring a sketch artist to sketch the alien creature. Meanwhile, Wera visits Sokolik to get information about this story. However, Sokolik refuses to say anything as he has made a deal with Polgar not to reveal anything until the investigation is over. Unfortunately, Wera knows Polgar is investigating without Sokolik. Once Wera mentions that, Sokolik agrees to help Wera. In Truskasy, Polgar shoots footage to show the place where everything happened. On the site, Polgar finds feathers. In the same video, Polgar captures the alien being’s sketch. Elsewhere, Sokolik introduces Tadeusz to Wera and asks Tadeusz to add Sokolik as a speaker for the next day’s conference.

In the archives room, Sokolik explains that throughout history, alien creatures have mostly been found underwater rather than in space. Hence, Sokolik believes in USOs rather than UFOs. In one of Sokolik’s books, we can see the alien images. At the hotel lobby, Polgar, Julia, and Kittel have a meal when Wera walks in. Even Wera stays at the same hotel. Later, Wera and Polgar sleep together. Under the table, there is an audio recorder. At home, Julia finds some drawings Sara has sketched, matching the one Kunik sketched by a sketch artist. When Polgar suspects Wera’s intentions, she promises it is just a coincidence.

Who is the second witness to the alien spotting?

Later, Tadeusz tells Polgar about Sokolik’s talk that evening. When Polgar looks for Sokolik at his house, Polgar finds Julia there. They head out together to the conference room but are informed that the talk is taking place that evening. Outside the building, Julia tells Polgar that she has another witness. Now, Julia takes Polgar home and asks him to speak to Sara, even though Julia’s father is against it. After questioning Sara, Polgar confirms that Sara has indeed seen and talked to these creatures. Meanwhile, Lenta finds something interesting in an old newspaper.

Before the conference, Sokolik and Polgar argue. To ease the tension, Polgar reveals that Sara is their next witness. However, Sokolik gives bad news to Polgar as Wera knows information about this case. At the conference, Sokolik mentions Sara as their new witness in front of Julia. Meanwhile, Polgar meets Marian and convinces him not to run Wera’s story. Later, Julia shows Sara’s drawings to Sokolik. However, Julia warns Sokolik not to drag Sara into his world. Elsewhere, Wera and Lenta meet, where Lenta shows a newspaper article. According to Wera, this disproves Polgar’s theories. Despite that, Wera asks Lenta to keep it a secret for now. The episode ends with Henryk and Kittel listening to Wera’s chat with Polgar from Wera’s room.

Project UFO (Projekt UFO, 2025) Episode 4 Recap:

The episode opens at Polgar’s house, where Polgar is working on his book, and Lenta gets an acupuncture massage. Suddenly, Lenta calls Polgar to watch the news as Wera and Sokolik have released a show on the Truskasy case. Soon, Polgar meets Wera to confront her about what she has done. However, Wera is surprised as Polgar is an old player in the TV world. Wera explains that she did the show to make Close Encounters look good. Additionally, Wera asks Polgar to meet Henryk. Surprisingly, Wera says Henryk knows about her and Polgar, as they don’t have any secrets between them. Elsewhere, the secret service police visit Sara to talk to her about the aliens. To give this news, Julia visits Sokolik, who constantly corrects Julia that it is USO and not UFO.

Why is Sokolik mad at Polgar?

Additionally, Sokolik adds he has a moral obligation to tell people the truth. However, Julia is annoyed as Sokolik does not consider his duties towards his daughter (Sara). Annoyed, Julia wishes it were Sokolik who vanished, not Sokolik’s brother. At Henryk’s office, Henryk apologizes for airing Wera’s story, as it was political and needed to be done. However, he asks Polgar to take time and prepare for Close Encounters. Furthermore, Henryk asks Polgar to invite Sokolik and Kunik to a party. As asked, Polgar invites them both and gives them a hotel room. There was a problem that night as Kunik spent time sleeping in the lobby, and the hotel didn’t suit him.

The next day, Polgar arrives and promises to take Kunik home so he is comfortable. Polgar only takes Kunik to the show as he is mad at Sokolik for prematurely revealing the incident on TV. At the show, Polgar says Kunik is the first Polish person to have an alien encounter, followed by Sara. There is a video footage of Sara saying the aliens came from a UFO. At home, Lenta is annoyed with Polgar for using an old man to further his cause. It is evident to Lenta that Kunik is brainwashed, and he will believe anything told to him. Later, Polgar gets a call from Sokolik, annoyed for provoking Sara in the wrong direction. The annoyance mainly was because Polgar failed to mention USO. To calm Sokolik, Polgar says Sokolik is invited to a party hosted by Henryk.

Why is Sokolik arrested?

Later, Lenta shows Polgar a newspaper article. According to the article, Kunik’s father had delusions as he had claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in a tree. These things can be genetic, which scares Polgar. However, Lenta says she hasn’t spoken about this to anybody. At the party, Sokolik is unhappy with Wera as she also didn’t mention USO on her show. The group is introduced to a hypnotist who recognizes Sokolik, saying he met Sokolik in Kyiv. However, Sokolik claims it’s a mistake. Since Kunik is a special guest, Henryk introduces Kunik to the group and says that Kunik saw a UFO. This triggers Sokolik, who gives a lecture on the difference between UFO and USO.

To put the debate to an end, they decide to use the hypnotist to help Kunik describe the details. In between, Sokolik interrupts as Kunik uses terms like the creatures having webbed feet. By then, the General and his men stop by and congratulate Kunik for seeing the aliens. When Polgar and Henryk are alone, Polgar asks what will happen to Sokolik, as Polgar knows Sokolik is not a bad man. Henryk says Sokolik sells illegal alcohol and supports solidarity. This will put Sokolik in prison. As expected, Sokolik is arrested and given a 10-year prison sentence. That night, Julia decides to tell Sara who her father is.

Project UFO (Projekt UFO, 2025) Ending Explained:

Was the Alien Abduction a Political Hoax?

Before Julia can say anything, Sara already knows the truth. While hanging out by the lake, Julia and Sara find something shiny and pull it up. The next day, Julia meets Sokolik in prison and gives him a robot hand. Julia saw this under the lake, which belonged to Sokolik’s brother. It turns out Sokolik’s brother was not abducted but died inside the lake.

Before Julia leaves, Sokoliks asks Julia to get a signed copy of Polgar’s and Lenta’s book. At the signing, Polgar is taken aback by Sokolik’s name. So, Polgar visits Sokolik in prison, where he makes Polgar question what the government is hiding from its people. Since Sokolik and Polgar know that the alien story is a farce, the fingers now point toward the government. Even Kunik was hypnotized by Sokolik at Kunik’s son Stephan’s request.

When Polgar feels guilty for his actions, Sokolik says he did what he wanted, which was never about Polgar. The reason was that Sokolik believed the aliens had abducted Antek from the lake, and he wanted people to investigate the waters, which is why he came up with the USO theory. Wera has a primetime spot but has been asked to change into a uniform as the new prime minister will be addressing the show.

The new Prime Minister is none other than the General who believes Poland is under attack from aliens, so that martial law will be put into effect immediately. Now, Polgar is on the way to meet Kunik but is interrupted by the military officers as it is off-limits. The area near Kunik’s house has become a landing zone for the aliens. Furthermore, the officer tells Polgar that Utilitarian State Occupation (USO) will be in effect from midnight.

How Alien Panic Became a Political Weapon

Each character in Project UFO has their own reason for fueling the alien narrative. Kunik, suffering from a hereditary delusional disorder, becomes an easy target. Knowing this, Sokolik hypnotizes him—not out of cruelty, but out of desperation. Sokolik is consumed by the belief that underwater aliens abducted his son, Antek, and he’s determined to make the world listen. His fixation blinds him to everything else, including his daughter, Sara, whose neglect pushes Julia, Sara’s close confidante, over the edge.

Julia, already on shaky ground at work, seizes the moment. Furious at Sokolik’s obsession and looking for a way up, she reports him to the authorities—not for the alien theories, but for his side hustle: an illegal alcohol operation. For Julia, it’s a brutal but necessary move to protect her job and expose the man she believes is spiraling into madness.

Meanwhile, Wera and Polgar are in it for the fame. Their ambition knows few limits—they chase the alien story with fervor, seeing it as their ticket to relevance. But in truth, they’re nothing more than pawns in a larger political game. As the story spirals, the government steps in, co-opting the hysteria to justify the imposition of martial law.

The final act echoes real events from Poland’s not-so-distant past. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, tensions between the ruling Polish People’s Republic and the Solidarity Movement reached a boiling point. Farmers were forbidden to sell their produce, hunger strikes broke out, and political dissent grew louder. Under the guise of protecting order, the state cracked down, ushering in a new era of control. Though the aliens in Project UFO may be fictional, the fear, manipulation, and unrest are rooted in historical truth.
