Every movie enthusiast has been eagerly waiting for the lineup for the 77th Cannes Film Festival to be unveiled. However, it’s all worth the wait as Cannes is slowly but surely releasing the names of the films. Last month, to everyone’s delight, it was announced that George Miller-directed film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will have an early world premiere on la Croisette on May 15. Now, the news has come swelling that Quentin Dupieux’s Le Deuxième Acte (The Second Act) will kick off the proceedings of Cannes 2024 on May 14.

Why is Quentin Dupieux’s film a perfect choice for Cannes 2024?

Quentin Dupieux is a celebrated filmmaker who has delivered numerous films throughout his career. Some of his notable works include Rubber (2010), Wrong (2012), Smoking Causes Coughing (2022), Yannick (2023), and Daaaaaalí! (2023). Dupieux’s films often explore the elements of comedy, surrealism, and satire. Dupieux made his Cannes debut with his 2022 film Smoking Causes Coughing. Now, after two years, the French filmmaker is all set to mark his comeback with his French-language comedy road movie Le Deuxième Acte (The Second Act).

As announced by the film festival, Dupieux’s film will premiere on May 14. The film’s Cannes premiere will coincide with its theatrical release. As is tradition with many opening-night films, it will debut in French theaters on the same day. The film’s star cast, including Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel, and Raphaël Quenard, will be in attendance at the International Film Festival.

For those who don’t know much about Le Deuxième Acte, the official synopsis of the film may provide you with the gist of the film. The official synopsis reads: “Florence wants to introduce David, the man she’s madly in love with, to her father Guillaume. But David isn’t attracted to Florence and wants to throw her into the arms of his friend Willy. The four characters meet in a restaurant in the middle of nowhere.”

The rest of the highly anticipated lineup for this year’s edition of the festival will be revealed by Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux at the annual press conference on April 11. Some of the films that are rumored to be a part of the Cannes Film Festival 2024 are Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, Audrey Diwan’s  Emmanuelle, Andrea Arnold’s Bird, Edward Berger’s  Conclave, and David Cronenenberg’s The Shrouds, among others.

Greta Gerwig will preside over this year’s main jury.
