“Santita” (TV Series 2026) is one of those soft dramas that trail a life being remade, reappraised. It’s that pivotal moment when one revisits past decisions, weighs them, and wonders if the right choices were made. Or is it something else? This sense of lack, the lingering ‘what if’, colours the narrative as a woman surges out to reconnect with an ex. Is the emotion still bursting? Is she imagining the connection when it has already been nipped?

“Santita” has warmth and heart. It’s buoyed by those even as the actors go all out to give rousing, affectionate, lively performances. There’s a full-bodied energy and zest to the show even while it occasionally spins out of focus. To make a show like this, you need actors who can infuse life, vitality, and chaos. This is a story zipping with contradictions, humour, and spritzy delight. There are a lot of missteps, grudges, resentments, tempered yet again with a vibrant confection of silliness, especially the joy of a life turning off-course.

However, there’s a strong seam of darkness that registers itself intensely as the film winds up. It’s punishment for a crime Santita hasn’t even committed. She has brought it on herself for helping the one true love of her life. It turns increasingly sad and despairing, but it’s what Alejandro wanted for a peaceful death. The price has to be paid by her. It’s unfortunate but inevitable.

Santita (TV Series 2026) Recap:

Rodrigo García’s show is about giving life and love another shot. Plunged deep into work, the heart has frozen over. What does it take for someone to look anew at life and love with greater vigour? When does the appetite for surprise return? What’s the tipping point for someone before they are compelled to take a fresh look at their life?

Remarkably and refreshingly, the show doesn’t treat disability as a crutch. It sees it as inherent and as part of Santita. There’s no evasion or manipulation of the protagonist’s disability. She’s confident and efficient at her job. Neither are there unnecessary spillages on lamenting the disability. The wheelchair is as natural a component of the story, her life, as the occasionally reckless choices she makes and regrets.

Why Did Santita Ditch Alejandro?

It enormously helps that Paulina Dávila and Gael García Bernal have terrific, enthralling chemistry. They elicit the butterflies in the stomach, the headrush of an old love returning to assert itself. Santita left her ex years back. There have been irreconcilable differences, leading to the split. Why does Santita feel all these complicated emotions now?

The actress brings strength and vulnerability, toughness and indecision in a supple mix. The show isn’t afraid to present her unlikable facets. Paulina owns it gloriously in a meaty role. There’s an inner life given, or at least gestures to it. It’s a performance lit with emotional intelligence. She thrusts herself into the complexities and dilemmas, paradoxes and contradictions. It’s a difficult role wherein there’s a lot of tussling, hurt being bottled, and lashing out before candour can give way to another chance.

Both Bernal and Dávila spark this flush of love and eagerness with naivete, joy, and utter conviction. It’s a delight to watch them navigate the awkwardness and stumbling frailties of a relationship getting back on its feet. Though it has been years since Santita was with her ex-lover, Alejandro, she hasn’t quite put him behind. The two were a blast together.

Santita has changed a lot, though, over the years. The accident cast everything upside down. Prior, she was a conscientious, rule-abiding person. She followed everything to the T, living a clean, neat, unquestionable life. It was too polite and civil, and the accident struck. She became reckless and a party animal. She wants to hurl herself into grand pleasures, abandoning her former self, who was much too obsessed with being a person of integrity and irreproachable manners.

How Does Alejandro Re-Enter Santita’s Life?

Her wedding to Alejandro was almost finalised. However, she dumps him at the altar. She thinks she’s rescuing him from a life of being her caretaker. Santita thinks he’d be too tied to her. She imagines that her act is offering him a release and knows it’s incredibly hurtful. Alejandro goes away and marries a hippie. But it’s a reckless decision. It doesn’t take long for the relationship to collapse. Little does Santita know that Alejandro would re-enter her life. She has fantasised about the reunion. Santita feels guilty about admitting that to herself. She has been cruel to him, yet she cannot shake off the intensity of their mutual feelings.

It’s an illusion or marriage of their deferred togetherness that propels the show. Will they be back together or break up again? Who will be the one to pull the plug this time? Santita’s wedding-day act was harsh. She just slipped him a note and went away. The wedding was widely anticipated. The two were seen as the it couple, frenzied, adored, and idealised.

Suddenly, one day, years later, Alejandro’s wife, Cecilia, comes to Santita’s clinic. She is seeking an abortion. But it has already been twelve weeks. Abortions past that window are illegal. Santita refuses. However, Cecilia can’t go abroad right now. Her visa has expired. She needs urgent help and needs some extra cash, so Santita does it for the clinic’s sake. Some complication ensues, so Alejandro has to be alerted. He doesn’t know about the pregnancy.

A still from “Santita” (TV Series 2026)

Cecilia tells Santita she isn’t prepared to be a single mother. The reason is that Alejandro has cancer. He’s dying. After years of no contact, Santita and Alejandro resume conversation. He urges her to come to San Felipe with her. It’s a beach town that holds great memories for them. Initially, she turns down his offer. He proceeds nevertheless.

There’s also Mauricio at Santita’s workplace. He’s affable and lovely. Mauricio is genuinely interested in her. It’s not that Santita actively brushes him away. But she’s designed her life around casual flings. She can’t envisage any serious relationship. She also can’t see herself falling in love with Mauricio despite his disarming courtship.

What Request Does Alejandro Make?

Suddenly, Santita decides to act on her impulses. She lands in San Felipe. Alejandro is surprised when she turns up. The two have a wonderful time, behaving like giddy lovers who cannot have enough of each other. They discuss the trajectory of their lives, their rash decisions. A moment of physical intimacy allows them to have the frank conversation that has been hovering. She confesses the reason she’d left him at the altar. Alejandro holds no grudge. He’s nice, and he forgives.

Alejandro opens up on his vulnerability, his depleting health, and his cancer diagnosis. He pleads with her to help him. She realises he’s asking something major from her. She’s not sure how to respond. Santita rebuffs his request and scurries away. She doesn’t want to be having a dialogue where the man she loves is asking her to kill him through euthanasia. It’s a devastating situation. She ignores Alejandro as much as possible. But they are in the same town and keep running into each other. She can’t entertain his request. It has left her too deeply shaken.

Cecilia invites Santita and Mauricio over to dinner. She does know of the former relationship between Santita and Alejandro. Cecilia and Mauricio hit it off quite well. Later that night, Alejandro turns up at Santita’s place. She’s not that startled and sees it as a natural continuation. Ever since the accident, she hasn’t orgasmed. But that night, Alejandro makes love to her. To her shock, Santita orgasms. All these years, she has felt a deep hollow within. Orgasm has been eluding her for a while. It was only waiting for the right person.

It is at her nephew’s wedding party that Santita finds out about Mauricio and Cecilia having an affair. Frankly, she’s quite relieved. It allows her release from her pent-up guilt. She’d been feeling horrible about her revitalising intimacy with Alejandro. She feared breaking up his marriage. Now, she can feel at ease. She can’t just blame herself, but has found others to direct her signs to.

So, she dances away with Alejandro. She can no longer hold herself back. It’s a night of great ecstasy. The guilt caves to desire and liberation. She finds her uncharted feelings exhilarated and beautifully unbound. There can be no impediments. However, the night takes a turn for the worse when he suddenly collapses and has to be rushed to the hospital.

Why Does Santita Agree To His Plea?

Once again, he pleads with her to allow the situation that he so desperately wishes for. He wants to die. She gives her a gun. However, the next morning shows he hasn’t killed himself. He seeks something painless. After some budging and pondering, she finally considers his entreaty. She sources pentobarbital from a friend. It’s a heartbreaking thing she’s doing, but she has realised now that she must listen to what he really needs, instead of being self-serving and vainly protective. She’s giving him peace. He wants it.

They have a drink together. He spikes his with the drug, and he dies. She is shaken. But he’s beyond revival. Cecilia lashes out at her for ‘murdering’ her husband. Santita is utterly distraught. She feels the walls are closing in on her. The cops also suspect her. Her assistant discovers that she has aided the killing of Alejandro. When Santita goes to her father, insisting on empathy, he understands but urges her to surrender to the cops. The detectives land at her place, arresting her.

Santita (TV Series 2026) Ending Explained:

Why Is Santita Arrested?

The arrest is incredibly severe and humiliating. She’s practically dragged away. The love of her life has passed. Not only does she not get space and time to grieve, but she’s branded as a criminal for killing him, a profoundly untrue allegation. She understood his pain and helped give him a release, despite it being seen as illegal in the country. It’s a terrible fate that was waiting for her.

Upon autopsy, the cops would rationalise that Alejandro had been drugged. Cecilia alleges she saw Santita alone with him. There are all the incriminating factors. Plus, Santita has always been perceived as a troublesome, troubled individual even within her own family. She has responded to chaos with chaos. Clearly, it hasn’t panned out well for her.

Santita has suffered for years. Often, she has done something with poor thinking for herself, but out of foresight. She is the reason her nephew’s wedding falls apart. But at least, she severs a false bubble before it can bring two people greater pain. The truth of Alejandro will continue stinging even as she may remain in jail for a crime she hasn’t committed at all.
