The show, where therapists who are broken inside try to fix others, takes a step forward this season and leans fully into the inevitable theme of “moving on.” While the warmth still lingers, the series reaches a point where the storylines grow heavier, forcing our favourite characters to confront their demons. Created by Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein, and Jason Segel—who also stars—the writing in “Shrinking” hits a new peak in season 3. The tonal shift deepens, and the treatment feels strikingly unabashed. The show evolves from a comforting watch into a meditation on grief, where healing is no longer about fixing, but about acceptance.
Even as the comedic elements are dialled down to prioritise character arcs, they add a deeper sense of emotional weight to the themes at play. Each episode contributes to pushing the series into something more expansive than it initially appears, even if its early outings seemed relatively light. The growing heaviness feels like an act of tearing off the bandage before it’s too late. The standout in this season is once again Harrison Ford, who carries himself with a quiet, monk-like presence, delivering wisdom tinged with melancholy. Through him, the show distills its central idea with clarity: acceptance is key, and forgiveness is strength.

Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 1 “My Bad” Recap:
Season three starts right off with Paul (Harrison Ford) getting worked up over his worsening Parkinson’s, which has caused his tremors to aggravate. He befriends Gerry (Michael J.Fox) while waiting outside his neurologist, Dr. Sykes’s (Amy Rosoff) office. Paul meets Jimmy (Jason Segel) on a park bench and worries about how he’s nearing his end, and even though he has almost come to terms with it, he beams while saying that he has newfound energy to live life to the maximum.
They both hop in a car on a race track and go on a ride where Paul drifts and turns like a pro, with Jimmy in the passenger seat beside, screaming out of his lungs. Gaby (Jessica Williams) and Derrick (Damon Wayans Jr.) have a fun encounter when she tells him that he was screaming in his sleep. Liz (Christa Miller) and Derek (Ted McGinley) tease a neighbour. Brian (Michael Urie) and Charlie (Dewin Kawaoka) set up a baby crib. Sean (Luke Tennie) and his dad’s relationship seems to be soaring.
After Jimmy nearly saved Louis’s (Brett Goldstein) life in the climax of Season Two, they have managed to bear each other’s company since then. Alice (Lukita Maxwell) is over the moon when she learns that the Wesleyan soccer coach will be present during her next game for scouting talents. While Jimmy can’t contain his excitement hearing this, the thought of sending his daughter to a college away from home overwhelms him.
He confides in Louis later about this and also urges him to kickstart his life again, to be done with feeling endlessly guilty over his costly mistake. After choosing Ava (Claudia Sulewski) as the baby’s mother, Charlie and Brian discuss with Liz what role the mother will play in their lives once the baby is born.
Sean’s relationship with Paul’s neurologist ends on a healthy note, and our entire cavalry of dysfunctional homo sapiens arrives at Alice’s game. They cheer and root for her in an animated way, which raises the eyebrows of everyone around them. Post the game where Alice scores a goal, she gets to know that the Wesleyan soccer coach is interested in meeting her. Jimmy, out of the blue, mentions that Paul and Julie (Wendie Malick) should get married, which irritates Paul but amuses Julie. Gaby pesters Paul and Julie to consider the prospect of a wedding and ends up convincing them not only to tie the knot but also to allow her to throw them a ceremony as per her wish.
Meanwhile, Derek is initially scared to break the news to Liz that their son Matthew got fired from his job and wants to move back in with them. They both wanted him to grow independently and still think so, but their affection lets him back in. On a separate note, Liz advises Brian and Charlie to set boundaries with Ava, which they agree to implement.
However, they can’t do it when they meet Ava, and she tells them how lucky she is to have found a decent pair. Parallely, Alice turns down the offer of the Wesleyan coach, worried that her father might be left alone if she moves. Sean breaks this to Jimmy, and while Jimmy’s desire to be around his daughter still lingers in his heart, he pushes Alice to call her coach and request a reconsideration.
Paul acts grumpy when the boys take him for wedding shopping. He behaves crankily, but when he notices that his restraint upsets Julie, he proceeds to do it anyway. A quick wedding takes place in a backyard garden-type setup done by Gaby and co, where Jimmy, as the best man, delivers a heartfelt speech about the couple. Paul signals Jimmy to officiate them, and even before Jimmy honours his duty, the bride and the groom kiss, sparking an evergreen moment.
Paul bumps into Jimmy after the wedding, and he advises him to find someone in his life again. When Paul goes inside to get something, he sees Gerry eating at his dinner table. Julie quickly arrives at the scene and asks Paul who he was talking to. He points his finger at Gerry, who disappears suddenly. It takes a moment for Paul to realize that it was a hallucination. As Julie holds Paul’s hand, clutching it tightly, the scene showcases a glimpse of what the couple’s future might look like.
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 2 “Happiness Mission” Recap:
The episode opens with Jimmy and Sean proposing to aid Paul and Julie, since Paul’s disease is progressing. We learn that he has developed a UTI, and with Parkinson’s, it is stressing his body. Jimmy advises Paul to stay off work for a few days, where he and Gaby will cover his patients as well. Paul has no choice other than to comply. Onto Sofi, she brings a spare key of her car to Jimmy, which she previously sold to him, and that leads them to catch up and share a light-hearted exchange.

In the Rhodes therapy centre, Gaby is dealing with her patient Maya, who suffers from avoidant issues. Alice shares a selfie of herself and Louis with Gaby, which doesn’t sit right with the therapist. The photo of the two of them has made Gaby restless, which affects her session. Switching to a scene where Jimmy, Alice, and Louis are attending an art gallery, Louis gets triggered by a memory of his ex-girlfriend Sarah. Jimmy suggests that Louis go see his ex-girlfriend to overcome his fears.
An awkward situation pans out at Sean’s food truck, where he hides from a woman. He says she was his ex-girlfriend when he was in the army. Gaby and Liz are also at the scene, and they mock him for being afraid of her, but Sean reveals that he ghosted her because he was so naïve and honestly an asshole back then.
Later, Louis visits Jimmy’s house and brings him a gift to apologise for running away abruptly at the art gallery. Gaby is also in the living room, where a heated exchange happens between her and Louis privately. She lashes out at him for killing her best friend, Tia, and adds that even though Jimmy and Alice care about him, she will never forgive him and asks him to get a life of his own. Louis stands like a tree through all of this and calmly concurs in the end.
In Liz’s house, Derek pulls himself together and divulges to Matthew that he is going to kick him out to find his own feet, which the latter doesn’t take well. Louis goes to Sarah’s house, where he sees her husband and her, happy with their life, which gives him a bittersweet closure. On a hike, Louis fills in Jimmy and Alice about his meeting with Sarah and reveals that he is going to move out of the city and restart his life. The father-daughter duo is happy to hear this. In the final moments of this episode, Jimmy is seen pacing back and forth outside of Sofi’s house, mustering the courage to ask her out.
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 3 “D-Day” Recap:
Episode three begins when Jimmy’s father, Randy (Jeff Daniels), comes to visit them. Alice is jovial around her grandfather, while Jimmy is very uncomfortable. They all laugh about a time when Jimmy was afraid to ask a woman out, because in one instance, he got a nosebleed doing so. At the outset, Randy’s jokes seem harmless, and even Jimmy doesn’t have any problem with them.
When Alice says to her father that she is planning to invite Randy to her graduation ceremony, Jimmy jumps the gun and replies that he would rather not want that due to some unresolved history between them. Alice doesn’t protest but obliges. She later has a conversation about this with Paul at their usual park bench spot, where he advises her to go ahead and invite Randy. He says that Jimmy won’t address his issues on his own, and this might even help him improve his relationship with his father.
Brian is stressed about installing a baby seat in his car, and he tags along with Derek to shop for one. Suddenly, he gets a message that Ava has gone into labour, a little early. Charlie is stuck in Chicago due to a storm, so Brian must be the one to rise to the occasion. He informs Jimmy and Liz about the situation, and they show up for him in the hospital, where Ava is admitted.
Sean, who previously hid from his ex-girlfriend Marisol (Isabella Gomez), faces her eventually when she runs into him at his food truck. She says she would love to spend some time with him, to which Sean agrees tentatively. He has a dialogue with Gaby about this, who asks him to meet her, quoting that she might be putting a step forward to resolve things between them, and he should allow it.
Back at the hospital, Brian can’t think straight, and Liz attempts to soothe his nerves. They receive shocking news that Ava hasn’t signed the adoption papers yet, and the doctor hints that it can mean hesitation, which worries Brian even more since he may not become a father after all. A nurse called Kimmy acts in an unusual manner that makes it clear that she’s interested in Jimmy. Liz notices this and encourages him to ask her out, which he does later.
Paul informs Gaby and Alice to meet him at the usual park bench, where he announces that it is time that he entrusts Alice to Gaby, who will be her therapist henceforth, now that his disease is worsening and he may not be around long enough to constantly help Alice. However difficult and painful this is for both Gaby and Alice, they cannot retaliate. Paul expresses his appreciation for Gaby and tells Alice that she is one of the best in the therapy business—of course, after him—reassuring her that she will be in good hands. He then walks away, having passed the baton.

In the hospital, Ava becomes aware that Brian is behaving strangely, so she asks him about the reason. When he fake smiles, she shows him the signed adoption papers lying by her bedside, which lights him up. Marisol meets Sean in Jimmy’s pool house, where he resides, and they both openly talk about their feelings.
They realize their mistakes and become understanding of each other, which leads to an intimate kiss. In the final scene, everyone except Sean gathers at the hospital, as Ava has delivered her baby. As Charlie and Brian are glowing, Gaby takes the baby and puts her in Paul’s lap. He looks at the innocent baby’s face and up at everyone, soaking in this priceless moment as he utters the words, “Enjoy the ride, Kid.”
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 4 “The Field” Recap:
The episode opens with Jimmy and the nurse Kimmy on a dinner date. They are talking normally, but when Jimmy mentions that his wife died in a car accident, Kimmy quickly bursts into tears. She lets out loud cries, which makes everyone at the restaurant look at them awkwardly, while Jimmy sits there in his seat, puzzled by what to do. Cut to Charlie and Brian’s house, Liz and Alice are coddling their baby.
Liz carries out a test to see whether Brian is equipped to take care of the baby and finds herself surprised as he passes it. Looking at Sean, he introduces Marisol to Derek, Liz, and Alice. For Maya, she slightly opens up to Gaby, which the latter considers it as a betterment. And with Jimmy, Paul accompanies him to his neurologist, where they learn that his UTI has cleared and he can very well go back to work, which sounds like a win to the duo.
Gaby asks Jimmy for a favour, for him to appear as a guest professor at the college where she teaches. Jimmy agrees to help her out, but the session ends clumsily when one of Jimmy’s patients, Wally, emerges from the classroom and vouches for Jimmy’s therapy methods. Jimmy addresses this afterwards with Gaby, saying that it looked like she set him up in front of her students.
They both fight, and Gaby expresses his resentment towards Jimmy, stating that he also didn’t share that he was seeing Louis. Jimmy says that it’s not fair that she’s bringing it up only now, but Gaby reminds him that he also brought sex workers to his house after Tia died, which upset her. Jimmy grows impatient that Gaby is firing at her out of the blue and leaves the room.
In a session Paul has with Gerry, it becomes clear to the former that the most important things in his life are the people who care about him and not his work, which he has failed to admit for a long time. Simultaneously, Derek has provided Matthew with a house (one of his own), away from them, to figure himself out. While at the place, spotting a packet of gummy bears, Derek swallows a handful of them, mistaking them for regular candies.
By the time Matthew realizes this, his father is seen stumbling on the street and makes out with a human statue outside a textile store. He gets himself an ambulance and informs everyone by phone that he’s in a health crisis. The clan, hearing this news, visits him at the hospital. The doctors treat him for the time being and discharge him, flagging an issue with his heart, which will require him to do an EKG later.
Maya mentions in her therapy session with Gaby about a trivia contest she loves to go to. Gaby attends the event, and the duo wins the contest, which brings them together. In a conversation Liz has with Brian, she says that she’s embarrassed to have a circus troop of man boys as sons, which unfortunately Matthew overhears when he enters the room. He leaves the room dejected, with Liz pleading that she didn’t mean it. Jimmy, while leaving for the day from his office, catches Paul sitting alone in the dark in his room.
He asks him what has happened, and Paul replies that the time has come for him to retire and that it has taken some time off and coming back for him to reach this conclusion. Jimmy can’t really say anything other than to agree. They leave the room with the camera focusing on Paul’s chair until the screen cuts to black.
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 5 “Hold Your Horsies” Recap:
Episode five starts with Liz repeatedly calling Matthew and apologising, but there’s no response from the other end. In another session with Maya, Gaby figures out that Maya is suffering from debilitating depression, so she advises her to reach out when things feel overwhelming. Gaby shares this with Derrick and remarks that she is pondering starting her own trauma centre one day, which he is happy to hear. At the same time, Marisol tries to convince Sean to go to a party with her, but Sean is afraid of shaking up his routine. Alice and Summer also tag along in this plan and encourage Sean to come with them and enjoy a little.
As far as Gaby and Derrick are concerned, they both have mutually agreed to hold off on serious talk about their future, like getting married or having kids. But when Derek shows the couple another place of his own, which he says could be Gaby’s trauma centre, Derrick is excited to think about the prospect, and it unsettles Gaby a bit. Paul says his retirement is a long process, and he needs to do a proper handover of his patients, which will take some months before he throws in the towel.
So Jimmy is sent to fetch Paul’s customer records from his storage unit. Meg also volunteers for this task, and while they are rummaging through the records, the duo discusses their respective relationship issues. Meg says she’s going through a tough time with her husband, while Jimmy mentions the horrific date he had with Kimmy recently. Jimmy says that he wishes he could have one uncomplicated kiss to kickstart his dating life again.

Back to Gaby, she is freaking out about her encounter with Derrick and is almost thinking about ending things with him, so she summons her inner circle to weigh in on her evaluations. They all say that her fear stems from her failed marriage, and that is the reason for her cold feet. Gaby then confides in Derrick that his proposal of sharing her dream scared her. But she adds by saying that she is confident about him now and is open to talking about the future from time to time.
Summer, Alice, and Marisol are ready to go to the party, but Sean is still in a dilemma. Alice gives him the final push, and before he knows it, Sean is dancing and vibing at the party. Elsewhere, Jimmy and Meg submit Paul’s records to him, but Meg feels bad when her father doesn’t thank him for helping out. Later, she visits Jimmy’s house and kisses him, and we see them heading to the bed, leading to a complicated moment in the show.
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 6 “Dereks Don’t Die” Recap:
We resume episode six with Jimmy waking up exhausted. He is spiraling over kissing and sleeping with Meg, and acts anxiously when Paul is around. Meg tells him to stop worrying about their no-strings-attached sex and says that she herself is not sweating over what her dad thinks since she’s a grown adult. She also says that she and Dave are getting divorced and that he has started seeing other people.
Her dad doesn’t know this yet, so she asks him to avoid disclosing this to him. Jimmy agrees to abide and replies that the kiss gave him hope, to which Meg smiles and nods. Concurrently, a successful restaurant owner enjoys Sean’s sandwich at the food truck and offers him an interview with a big restaurant.
Gaby introduces Maya to Sean, Alice, and Jorge (Trey Santiago-Hudson) — Sean’s co-worker, in an attempt for her to make new friends. Moving on to Brian, he hasn’t revealed the news of his newborn baby to his dad, worried that he might not take it well, based on how he treated Brian for his homosexuality when he found out. Ava and Liz give him strength and say that delaying will only make it worse.
Unable to pluck up the courage, Brian visits Jimmy, who repeats the similar advise. When he sees Brian still being confused, Jimmy picks up his mobile and calls his dad. Brian tries to cut the call, but it’s too late since his dad has already picked it up. Brian flips, not sure of how to say it, so he babbles it out hastily. His father is perplexed at first, but he takes the news surprisingly well, so Brian is slightly relieved.
Liz requests a favour from Jimmy that he help talk some sense to her son Matthew. Matthew visits Jimmy in his office, but Jimmy finds it difficult to get him to talk, which frustrates him. While Jimmy is divulging to Liz about how his session with Matthew was a disaster, Derek gets the EKG he was ordered. The results reveal that Derek is at high risk of getting a heart attack, so he is rushed to the hospital. Liz is more worried than ever, and in an emotional moment, she admits to Jimmy that she doesn’t know whether she’ll hold up if he dies. Everybody visits Derek at the hospital, where the doctors inform that he should undergo surgery.
Jimmy urges Matthew to meet his mother and be there for her during this time, setting aside their differences. Liz is sitting dejected in the hospital room where Matthew comes to meet her. They both hug as Liz once again apologises for her words, but Matthew says he wants to be with her at this time, which warms her heart. Long story short, Derek survives the surgery, and the family is reunited at last. Meg makes it known to her father that she’s getting a divorce, which takes him by surprise at first, but he reassures her, saying he will be there for her and trusts her to make whatever decision she takes.
Simultaneously, Sean calls the investor to say he considers his offer and is ready to appear for the interview. Maya calls Gaby and asks whether she wants to hang out when she is en route to visit Derek in the hospital. When Gaby declines it saying that she has come to see a friend, and questions whether everything is okay. Maya says she understands and ends the call, but we see her sitting alone in her house, drinking wine, and showing signs of having suicidal thoughts.
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 7 “I Will Be Grape” Recap:

From episode seven, the season shifts gear and sets the tone for the remaining episodes to follow. When Alice mentions about her soccer practice, the realisation creeps back for Jimmy that his daughter has actually grown up and will really be moving out for college. Also, the next day is Tia’s birthday so the mood is not cheerful in the house. For Liz, Derek’s mother Connie has come to visit and it is driving her wild since the former has always looked down on her parenting, as she rants to Gaby. Connie develops a natural liking to Matthew when she sees him helping out his father and praises him, which subtly irks Liz.
Elsewhere, Paul is in his office talking with his Parkinson’s friend Gerry, where they now get each other like no other and the sessions have become two-way actually. During Tia’s birthday, Jimmy’s family visits Tia’s cemetery and surprisingly find Louis also there. Alice has invited him but says she never thought he’d actually show up. At Jimmy’s house later, Louis says how he’s glad that Alice invited him. His life has also improved as he tells, which even though makes Jimmy happy, also makes him sad that he himself hasn’t been able to recoup.
At Derek’s house, Matthew shows a pair of shoes to his grand-mother and talks about it in a way which makes it apparent to Connie that he’s passionate about it. She suggests him to consider shoe-dealing as a career. This excites him, as Liz watches him glow that almost puts her in a bad-mother position. After Matthew leaves the scene, she confronts her mother-in-law upright, warning to stop teaching her how parenting works. Derek overhears this conversation from behind the room.
During a short visit to the food-truck, Sean asks Gaby to help him organise a support group for war veterans like him at the MMA centre. Gaby is happy to hear this and agrees to aid him. At the Rhoades therapy centre, Paul walks over to Gaby’s office and reveals something ground breaking. He believes that Gaby and him are more alike professionally and asks her to be his successor in taking over his centre.
Gaby says she thought Paul will choose Jimmy but he replies that Jimmy will understand. Being totally honest and straight forward, she replies that she’s honoured but she has a dream of opening up her own trauma centre and that she is going to arrange a support group for vets shortly. This doesn’t sit right with Paul but he makes it known that whatever she does will turn out good and wishes her well.
The clan is gathered at Jimmy’s house to celebrate Tia’s birthday and they all are gleefully singing “A Thousand years”. Jimmy is playing the piano and he sees Sofi now standing where once Tia stood and it fills his heart with happiness. Suddenly, Gaby receives a phone call. She answers the phone and hears that Maya is gone, which shocks her and brings her back to reality.
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 8 “Depression Diet” Recap:
Opening with Maya’s funeral, Gaby is standing under a tree, some distance away from the gathering, finding it difficult to process that she lost a friend who was her patient. The death takes a toll on her so Paul injects her with some of his own experience that helping patients even during times like these is how she can honour the ones she couldn’t.
And he also adds that he went through her notes of Maya and there was nothing she could’ve done differently that would’ve changed how things ended. Gaby can understand all this but she can’t get out of her state. Onto Sofi, she pays a visit to Jimmy’s house to collect her belongings she left last night during Tia’s birthday. Alice notices that the duo seem to like each other and nudges them to go on a proper first date.
We see Ava in Brian and Charlie’s house doing house-hold work and come to know that she has been living with them for a few days because her parents kicked her out and she hasn’t been able to find a place to stay. When Liz shows up at their door, Brian ushers away Ava, sneaking her out via the back door. But Liz sniffs out that Ava has been living with them and stresses that it is a slippery slope to let the child’s mother get involved in their lives after adoption.
Both of them say they can’t help it since she’s not doing well and this arrangement will be over once she becomes stable. Liz, while hearing all this, picks up a shirt lying on their sofa, that has a company name written on it. She suspects that something is not right and is determined to find out. Liz and Brian visit a restaurant where they spot Ava working as a server.
Brian runs away from the situation but Liz stays on and confronts Ava. Liz says to Ava’s face that she is not letting Brian and Charlie raise their child on their own by being so much involved in their lives. Ava fires back at Liz saying she is not any different than her because she also does the same from time to time. This makes Liz to introspect and and she takes a bold decision of not exceedingly schooling the couple to raise their baby.

Paul visits the MMA centre where the support group is present and sees for himself how well Gaby is conducting it. Jimmy goes to Sofi’s house for their first date which turns into something unexpected since Sofi’s ex-husband and her son are also there. Sofi and Jimmy share a few laughs, drinks and a meal anyway but she can’t shake off the feeling that she ruined their time together. She proposes to try the first date idea sometime later, with only the two of them spending some quality time. Jimmy can’t say no to this and when he blushes, Sofi leans forward and kisses him.
Cut to when Paul looks over at Gaby in her office staying late, he realises that she’s not in the right head space since Maya’s passing so he pitches in to rejuvenate her mood. Gaby reveals that one of her other patients fired her after hearing about Maya and that she feels guilty. Paul tries to console her but she confesses that she needs some break from work. Paul disagrees but Gaby doesn’t mind and walks out.
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 9 “Daddy Issues” Recap:
“Daddy Issues” can mean only one thing and it is the return of Randy. Alice’s graduation is approaching and she has invited her grandpa to be with her at the event. Everybody likes Randy and think he’s a charmer but Jimmy knows who he really is. When Alice finds her father being bothered by his presence, she asks him to tolerate it until her graduation, to which Jimmy agrees. Meanwhile, Gaby decides to take another week off from her work. This worries Paul so he plans to go to her house with a resolve of making her come back. At her house, he requests her to resume her duties at least for his sake, since it is his last week at work.
Over to Sean, he has appeared for the interview and is awaiting results. At work, he gets a call and comes to know that he has been selected. Although this makes him jump in joy, he is unsure of how he’s going to break this information to his work buddy Jorge. Since they’re only a two-man operation, Sean feels like he’s betraying and ditching Jorge by taking up the sous-chef job.
At Jimmy’s house, we see Randy fixing up his car while Alice is helping. Sofi is also around and Jimmy is acting strange. After the car is fixed, Randy casually mentions that he’s presenting his car to Alice. Her face brightens upon hearing this but she vividly notices Jimmy getting frustrated so she sort of looks at her father, as if asking for permission. Jimmy quietly nods and approves, while also informing his father that he already bought a car for Alice but he appreciates Randy’s gesture too.
After all the pep talk and recent request by Paul, Gaby is finally back where she belongs, unable to hide feeling good about taking Paul’s advice. When Paul notices this, he once again asks her to consider his offer of taking over his therapy centre after him. She sees how much this means to him so she actually thinks about considering it this time. When Gaby shares this with Liz, she gets annoyed but doesn’t tell why. Next thing we see, she storms into Paul’s office and blasts him over not calling out on Gaby for running away from her dreams. She says that he is being selfish by wanting Gaby to carry on his legacy that stops her from pursuing her own dream of opening her trauma centre. She leaves the room after saying all this and makes Paul think.
Back to Jimmy, he is speechless when Randy says that he won’t be able to make it to Alice’s graduation since a fishing trip with a buddy has come up. Jimmy asks whether he told Alice about this but he plans to wait until the graduation day to tell her. This lowkey puts Jimmy in distress so when Sofi asks about why his mood has dropped, he says that Tia and him got along when his father would do something like this.
Sofi goes out on a limb and says that she is slightly offended that Jimmy threw Tia at her face as a way of comparing and asks whether if this is something she will have to deal with on a regular basis, whenever any conflict came up. Jimmy realises that he has messed up but fails to say anything which makes Sofi walk away.

Sean breaks his news of selection to Jorge who doesn’t take it well. He starts yelling and shouting but Sean stays calm. Later, when he mentions this to Paul, he thanks him for helping him get over his anger issues. This hits a nerve with Paul as he runs to Gaby’s office later in the day. Also pondering over what Liz said, he sits across Gaby and says that he is honoured to have her carry forward his work but she should transform it how she likes, to not give up on her dreams and individuality. Gaby cries hearing all this and hugs him. At the end of the episode, we see Jimmy in a sunken state, walking the corridors of his home disappointed at himself and his current state of life.
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 10 “The Bodyguard of Sadness” Recap:
The penultimate episode packs its punches as things get real messy. The graduation of Alice and also Summer is around the corner and Jimmy is acting like he’s fine but we know that he’s not. At the start of this episode, everyone is around Brian and Charlie’s baby Sutton as they all are having a playful time, adoring the kid. Randy cracks a joke about Jimmy but he is not pleased to hear it. Jimmy is still sweating over his father not disclosing to Alice that he will not be attending her ceremony.
At work, Gaby informs Jimmy of Paul offering her his therapy centre and allowing it to be transformed as her trauma centre. Jimmy doesn’t mind but in fact goes on to say that he is not interested in running a business anyway but it feels like something is off when he says that. Randy visits the centre, meets Paul and thanks him for being there for Jimmy when he was not after Tia died.
At the vets support group, Jorge is visibly frustrated about Sean leaving his food truck for a better job. Jorge challenges Sean to a duel in the MMA centre that ends in him losing a teeth. Sean is feeling bad about all this but he can’t help it. Over to Derek, he has been emotional ever since his heart gave him a scare. Brian is worried over having to spend his time alone with his kid, because it seems like Charlie will be going away for three months on business. They have appointed a nanny though but still he is behaving frantic.
The three sons of Derek and Liz are finally sharing a same roof for the first time this season and we get to know that Matthew, who was once clueless about his life, is now killing it in his online sneaker resale business. Without making it look like a big deal, Will (Matt Michael) breaks it to his parents that he and his wanna-be social media influencer girlfriend are expecting a child. His girlfriend is also with him, so they both look sorted while revealing this huge news. Liz and Derek are out of words upon hearing this but they hide their fears and accept the reality. After some time when they are alone, they secretly get excited about going to be grandparents soon.
When Sean casually visits Derek’s house where his son Matthew is currently living, he is happily amazed when Derek asks him to move here. Derek says that Matthew might be moving out soon, now that he’s doing well for himself. Sean smiles and accepts Derek’s kindness, seeing in his eyes how much it means to him. Jimmy, while spending some time with his father alone, politely asks him to cancel his fishing trip and attend Alice’s ceremony.
He says that Alice loves him and it would break her heart if he didn’t come through on his promise. Randy blatantly declines to talk further about this as he is not willing to change and abruptly ends the topic. Later, he leaves, confessing to Alice that he won’t be attending her ceremony due to his fishing trip, which she takes surprisingly well. Jimmy is astonished at her maturity as Randy gives him an I-told-you-so look and tells that not everyone is as sensitive as him.
Derek wants to go on a European trip now that he feels like his time is limited, so he wants to maximize living his life as much as possible but Liz is not interested. After some pondering, Brian reveals to Charlie that he is ready to move to Tennessee with him and they will work it out together. Paul is ready to move to Connecticut and live with his daughter which she has always wanted, now that his final week of work is over and he has officially handed over his practice to Gaby.
It is graduation day and Jimmy attends Alice’s ceremony, beaming proudly when she comes onto the stage and receives her certificate. Back at his home, everyone is gathered as they celebrate the moment. In a private moment, Paul goes up to Jimmy standing alone on his balcony and asks him if everything is okay. Jimmy has had enough and he opens his floodgates. He outrightly tells Paul that he was deeply hurt when he came to know that Gaby was offered the therapy centre instead of him.
Paul is confused and asks him whether he would have accepted had it been offered to him, to which Jimmy says no. So now Paul can’t wrap his head around what Jimmy is accusing him of so his frustration grows. In agony, Jimmy says that the fact that Paul didn’t even ask him, felt like disrespect and even though he has supported him all his life, he was let down.
Paul gauges that Jimmy is projecting some unresolved trauma on him so he walks away, asking Jimmy to call him when he has cooled down. He notifies Jimmy via a text message next day morning that he’s leaving which Jimmy sees but doesn’t respond. In the final minutes of the episode, we see Paul taking one long look at his house before shutting its door.
Shrinking (Season 3) Episode 11 “And That’s Our Time” Recap:
The final episode might be the best of the season and that speaks volumes about how this season has cemented its standards. So Alice is flying off to Wesleyan in a couple of days and Jimmy is having a hard time pretending to be fine. Sean has already moved into Derek’s house like they agreed but Jimmy still thinks he’s living in his pool house because Sean hasn’t told him yet being afraid of hurting him. Jimmy gets over himself and calls Paul, apologising for his outburst earlier. Paul understands and comforts him. Jimmy asks him whether they could meet for breakfast some time, sort of as him bidding Paul a proper send-off since they didn’t get a chance to do it before he moved. Paul doesn’t say yes or no.

Gaby accidentally finds a ring in Derrick’s room and it genuinely makes her overthink. So like she usually does, she summons her inner circle and asks them to pour their thoughts. Initially, everyone listens to her rant about how Derrick broke their pact of not escalating their relationship. But as soon as she finishes, everybody makes Gaby see how Derrick has always put in the efforts to sustain their relationship whereas Gaby has gotten cold-feet whenever he does something nice.
Liz accidentally blurts out that she knew about the ring, which Gaby finds it hard to believe. At the end of the debate, Gaby is left with some thinking to do. A mini fight breaks out when Alice points out that Summer has been spending more time with Connor than with her. Jimmy gets to know about this and he arranges a meeting between the two, without them knowing, to get them back together. That plan works as they reconcile in a jiffy.
At Derek’s backyard, a whole new group of people have assembled and when Derrick arrives at the scene, he has no clue what is happening. As he’s standing stone-faced, Liz and Derek catch him to say that Gaby knows about the ring and she’s very upset. Derrick gets apprehensive but when he looks around one more time, he spots some of his family members in the crowd.
And before he knows it, Gaby enters the arena and walks straight up to him. The lights go off for a moment and reappear. Gaby is neatly dressed as if for a wedding and she delivers a soulful speech about how his relationship with Derrick has meant so much to her and that he has always made her push forward in life. Derrick can’t stop grinning when she proposes and they both kiss when he says yes to marrying her.
The time has come for Alice to move out and Jimmy drops her off at the airport, with Summer tagging along. So Summer is going to be accompanying Alice on her trip and Jimmy bids adieu to his daughter, watching her enter the airport from outside. He soaks in the moment and stands as the sun kisses his forehead, before making his way back. At his home, Sean finally reveals to him that he’s moved out of his pool house three days ago. Jimmy is happy for him and they hug it out.
Concurrently, Alice has made a pit stop at Paul’s house in Connecticut. When she hears about a text message Jimmy has sent Paul on how he’s feeling happy and sad at the same time, it worries her a bit. She asks Paul to give him some fatherly advice but he is not interested in it. He says that Jimmy should handle things on his own but Alice reminds him that he has meant a lot to her father so he should help him out.
This makes Paul to reflect and he calls Jimmy, asking whether they could meet. When Jimmy is delighted to hear this, Paul tells him to come to a coffee place where he’s at, right away. Jimmy shows up and Paul is there, waiting for him. Jimmy asks what the rush is all about and Paul replies that he cares about him a lot so he will always be there to pull him out of darkness. Jimmy gets slightly teary-eyed and replies that he can’t get over his past because it has given him a lot of scars.
Paul beautifully corrects him, saying that it’s only a shame to be old and not being covered in scars. He then points Jimmy to a woman, who is none other than Sofi sitting at a table. He has arranged this meet between Jimmy and Sofi. Before leaving, Paul nudges him to take a step forward in his life, face his fears and choose wisely. Jimmy feels the weight of his past, pulls himself mentally and walks towards Sofi. They both lock eyes and sit across the table, smiling at each other as the camera zooms out and cuts to black.
Shrinking (Season 3) Ending Explained:
What is Paul’s philosophy about scars?
Whoever thought Shrinking was just another dramedy in its first two seasons will be blown away by its latest installment. Without coming off as too sappy, the screenplay and writing this season manages to balance the emotional weight each character carries. The poker-faced humour of Paul and the way his character arc takes shape is the backbone of this season.
Jimmy plays his usual, like a broken vase that can’t be fixed but still looks beautiful on the inside. He doesn’t fully heal but decides to move forward despite the scars life has given him and that’s the point. In the end, Paul means that one should face their fears, break their shackles and not be afraid of putting oneself out in the world.
Because only by doing so, we will be able to bury the ghosts of our past. Inherently, Shrinking has always been a show that assigned substantial importance to small wins and silent battles everyone faces. This season is a testament of how a collective of incremental steps and working on unhealed trauma can take one to higher stages in life. Every character undergoes a major change which transforms them into a person their past-self never thought they could achieve, presenting us with the major takeaway that you never give up on people and yourself.
Without relying on limited storylines, the openness to expand and tread onto complex themes is what keeps Shrinking still fresh. Navigating heartbreaks, finding love and forgiving people who hurt you are themes which will never get old and this season excels in all three of them, making it one of the best shows to come out this year.
As Bill Lawrence already stated, the initial three season arc is now over and in its next season, the show will have a time-jump, with the same cast retained. Even though the finale of this season worked really well that it gave everyone a deserved ending, the upcoming season(s) hopefully does justice to its plot like it did this time because shows like Shrinking are necessary for the one simple reason that it humanizes us, the imperfect beings.
