Still Up (Season 1) Episode 6 Recap:
Episode 6: The Road Trip
Lisa’s Night Out
The new episode shows Lisa (Antonia Thomas) at a bar for a ladies’ night with her friends. When it is just a few minutes shy of 11, they have their round of drinks. But Lisa cannot focus on what her friends talk about. She is preoccupied with what Veggie’s mother asked her during their camping trip. Christine (Samantha Spiro) expects Veggie and Lisa to get married soon and to have babies. It seems like Lisa had not thought about these big life decisions until then. But once Christine mentioned it, in her aggressively genial manner, Lisa got anxious.
Is that what her future looks like? Although Veggie is reliable, does she really want to take that next step with him? Lisa just cannot stop worrying about it. Her friends bring her back to reality to question the same thing – her future with Veggie. Some of them even joke around about being jealous of her. One of them says how Lisa has a habit of overcomplicating things. While doing so, she does not realize how her words impact Lisa. They do more harm than good and push her further and further into an overthinking spiral.
Lisa’s Road Trip
Lisa walks away from her friends and goes to the washroom. She tries to imagine herself as the future wife of Veggie. But instead of feeling confident about it, she gets booed by some strangers in the stalls. They tease her for being unhappy in her present situation. So, she walks out and orders a number of shots at the bar counter. She drinks it one after the other. The next thing we know – she ends up at a payphone and calls Danny (Craig Roberts). She says she lost her phone but cannot find it. But it pleases Danny to know that she remembers his number, even in her drunken state.
Lisa decides to call Danny, assuming that he would be awake that late. She did not call Veggie for help since he usually goes to sleep by then. After that, it is almost impossible to wake him up. Thus, among other reasons. Danny tries his best to assess Lisa’s situation and her present location. But Lisa is too drunk to really tell him any specific details. So, he asks her to find a phone and send him a pin. Yet, since she is inebriated, she cannot understand what exactly he expects her to do.
Danny’s Masterplan
Once Lisa walks away from the payphone, Danny takes out a city map to figure out where she might be. He uses clay models to place them in locations. Soon after, Lisa calls him from a shop managed by someone named Al. She goes on and on about how long he worked there, whereas Danny keeps asking where she is. Finally, Al reveals that his shop is in Well Street, Hackney. Danny tells Lisa to take a bus from a nearby stop. Despite his dedicated help, Lisa cannot make sense of anything he says. Al still says that he will help her get on the bus.
Danny stays late, watching a boxing match on television, eating cereal, and waiting for an update from Lisa. Eventually, she calls him. But she does not return home as he hoped. She rather ends up at another place – a laundrette named Laundrette! Turns out, she got on the right bus but in the wrong direction. Now, she makes a bet with the laundrette manager, Lena, about the contents inside a particular dryer. Danny worries that this woman is taking advantage of her. So, he decides to book her a cab.
How does Lisa get so high?
During the video calls, Lisa keeps eating some biscuits (cookies for Americans!). Danny figures out that these cannabis biscuits got her stoned. Eventually, the dryer stops rotating, and she sees a puppet inside. Why would someone want a puppet cleaned so late at night? They both wonder. But that’s not the strangest part about the night. A man walks into the laundrette, and then another one – throws money in an out-of-order dryer and grabs something from another out-of-order dryer. Soon after, police officers arrive there and arrest Lena on account of selling drugs.
That’s where the trouble begins for Lisa. Even though Danny tries to help her hide the fact that she is wasted or has biscuits with drugs, the officers sense it from her movement. Eventually, she blurts out something that makes her situation crystal clear. So, the officers arrest her and take her to the station. Danny tries to resist the arrest by saying he is a witness to the fact she did not know they were drug cookies. But that does not help. So, Danny decides to go out himself to help Lisa.
Still Up (Season 1) Episode 6 Ending Explained:
Does Lisa return home after the ladies’ night?
Although Danny plans to go out and help Lisa, he finds it difficult to step outside. His social anxiety comes in the way of his deep friendship. Anyhow, since his neighbor Adam (Luke Featherston) cannot help him, he books a cab. But that takes him on another adventure, where the driver keeps whining about his failing marriage. He eventually stops the cab outside his house and starts fighting a half-naked man– who probably has an affair with his wife. That man gets inside the cab, sits in the driver’s seat, and starts driving.
Danny does not understand what to do in that situation. He still finds it better not to depend on this half-naked man for a ride. So, he tells the man to stop soon after. He walks the remaining distance to the laundrette named Laundrette. That’s when he receives a call from Lisa. Turns out, the police let her out with a cannabis warning. So, she finally reaches home. But, the next moment, she realizes Danny left his apartment just to ensure that she is safe. He made this road trip and left his comfort space – which is extremely difficult for him.
What happens after Lisa returns home?
Danny gets upset that Lisa went home and his efforts did not mean much. Maybe it is not as direct as that. It may also have to do with her not needing him anymore or realizing that she would soon officiate her relationship with Veggie. Anyhow, Danny immediately cuts her call. He gets deeply hurt by this betrayal. On his way back home, he stops by a bus stop. To his surprise, Amy (Lois Chimimba) shows up there. Even though he accidentally cut her finger during their last interaction, she sits next to him. It would be interesting to see how their relationship unfolds in future episodes.
On the other hand, we learn why Lisa agreed to go to the hen night. Veggie said that it would help her make decisions about her hen night. The prospect of marriage overwhelmed her. So, instead of being stuck in those thoughts, she decided to head out and spend the night with her friends.
