Episode 3 of Apple TV+’s “Sugar,” titled “Shibuya Crossing,” is highlighted by our first meeting with the cult-like group that Ruby manages and how John Sugar feels like an outcast even there. Very little to no development in Olivia’s missing case happens, but we do get to know what happened to Carmen and Carter. The episode keeps referring to some otherworldly connection, but the reveal has been concealed under Sugar’s nightmares, tremors, and a whole lot of ‘feelings.’
In the following article, we will take a spoiler-filled look at episode 3, including what the ending means. Reader’s discretion is advised.
Sugar Episode 3 “Shibuya Crossing” Recap:
Episode 3 of “Sugar” opens with a tired, sleepless John Sugar calling Ruby about possible info on the ‘Siegal’ girl in her system. Her answers are not affirmative, and once again, we hear her warning Sugar not to get involved in the case, but Sugar just avoids it before he receives an update from Charlie (one of his colleagues played by Paula Andrea Placido) about some developments from Melanie.
Meanwhile, Melanie receives a call from a really scared Teresa, who tells her that some really scary men came to her apartment to ask about what she knows about Carter. She doesn’t tell her that these men are still at the apartment, so Melanie comes to her place unannounced.
Stallings (Eric Lange), the main bad guy from the last episode, starts questioning Melanie about what she knows of Carter’s whereabouts. She tells him that she would have gone to the cops if she knew about him, seeing how he killed Carmen. Stallings is not convinced and proceeds to propose that he will torture Teresa if she doesn’t tell him the truth.
While all of this is going on, Sugar, who has been sitting in Charlie’s surveillance van just outside Teresa’s building, senses something wrong and knocks on the door. He tricks Stallings and the gang and leads them out of the house. He then cleverly escapes with Melanie, putting Teresa and her kids out of harm’s way.
Meanwhile, Kenny, who has been assigned to find out more about Sugar, lands at one of his old acquaintances’ doorsteps and seduces him into finding dirt on Sugar. This person, who feels like a tech genius, is able to trace back Sugar’s history and gives Kenny his mother’s address.
What does Melanie tell Sugar about Olivia’s disappearance?
Melanie, who had not been as open with Sugar in their previous meetings, finally shares about Carmen, Teresa, and Olivia. She tells him that she works at a shelter that helps women in trouble, and Olivia has been actively participating with her in assisting them. Melanie tells Sugar that she helped Teresa with a toxic relationship but wasn’t able to do the same for Carmen. She also tells him that while helping Carmen, Olivia grew really close to her and one day had to shoot him in the head after he killed Carmen. Melanie confesses that she helped Olivia with the body, but when she claims that Olivia started using again after that incident and did not report it to the police because it might hamper her family’s reputation, both Sugar and the audience are not convinced.
We also briefly see that Ruby is aware of the IT guy snooping around with Sugar’s personal file and Davy’s mother, Margit (Anna Gunn), suggesting to Bernie that he helps him get back into the limelight with the latest release.
What happens at the party?
Reluctantly, Sugar lands on Ruby’s doorstep for the party he was invited to. Inside her home, we see a lot of people like him from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and nationalities rounded up together. This cult-like gathering seems to be a regular thing that Ruby organizes after each of these people is done with their cases and has some time to spare for the collective.
At the party, Sugar briefly interacts with Henry (Jason Butler Harner), the only friendly presence he seems to be mildly interested in, and discusses his next assignment, which is in Japan. Sugar talks to him about the Shibuya crossing in Tokyo but also senses that he is unable to completely comprehend what’s going on with Ruby and the others.
When Ruby calls him for a one-on-one session, she warns him again about him getting overly involved in Olivia’s case. She reads out his diary entries, which sound like they are basic ramblings coming from a deeply troubled mind that ‘feels’ too directly involved with a case that is assigned to him. She doubles down on Sugar, seeking Dr. Vickers’ help.
Sugar Episode 3 “Shibuya Crossing” Ending Explained:
What is Ruby hiding from Sugar?
Later, after the party, we see Ruby talking on the phone to Dr. Vickers, who suggests to her that they take up Sugar’s case with Miller, who I am assuming is the head of operations for the group. We see her talking to him about Stallings and how Sugar is pretty close to having him. We can read on her computer that he is a convicted felon, and to avoid possible action from Sugar’s end, she deletes most of his records.
Did Melanie tell Sugar the truth about Olivia?
As expected, Melanie must have been lying because the ending of “Sugar” episode 3 sees her visiting her ex-husband, Bernie. From the way she enters the house, we can assume that they still have a pretty personal relationship, and since Bernie has been constantly trying to divert Sugar from Olivia’s disappearance, Melanie’s truth must be a lie.
What is Sugar’s truth?
The final moments of the episode see Sugar pondering all the lies that he has been told. However, he also confesses that he has also been a liar because he has a secret that he has been hiding, presumably from the audience. What is this secret? We don’t know about it yet; however, since we constantly see the moon being shown whenever Sugar is in his thoughts, we can assume that things might turn towards the supernatural. At this point, it is just a wild guess, and we have to wait for more reveals in the upcoming episode.
