Sugar Episode 5 is titled โBoy in the Cornerโ and focuses on Davy Siegal, especially after the big news that leaked through Hollywood in the previous episode. Will Davy be canceled, or will he be able to use his power and money to get away with it yet again? Exploring the obvious and most straightforward character for the first time, Episode 5 offers a tense standoff, and after straying away from John Sugarโs big secret in the previous episode, the ending hints at it again. Will John find one of these despicable characters trustworthy enough to reveal what he has been hiding from us?ย
That and many other things keep me hooked on Sugar. In the following article, I will run down what happens in Episode 5. Please proceed with caution, as this is going to be full of spoilers.ย
Sugar Episode 5 โBoy in the Cornerโ Recap:ย
No no. Donโt get too worked up to see the big-ass logo right in the center of your screen. It is, apparently, Davy Seigal watching the screener copy of his yet-to-be-released comeback โMan in the Corner.โ For those of you who are not aware of what a screener is, it is an advanced copy of a movie or TV show that is used by production houses to get feedback on their creation. Much before the final post-production is done.ย
Anyway, Davy sits on the couch by his motherโs side, fuming at the idea that his comeback vehicle, which, to an extent, feels like a way to white-wash his image before the news of his misconduct could come out, will never see the light of the day. The situation offers us another example of how Davy would treat women he used to work with, and what the entire opening actually tells us is that Davyโs mother, Margit, has been enabling his behavior for all these years. She tries to calm Davy down by saying that he needs to hold his ground because he would be the next of kin for a long line of powerful men, and when he does, he will be able to โfuck this town.โ
John Sugar, on the other hand, is a little on edge, too. Firstly, learning about Davy has made him extremely mad. He is not like Margit and wouldnโt just forgive a man who has been threatening women for years without seeing any consequences for his actions. So, in order to learn more, he first visits Jonathan Siegal’s place. After the heart attack, he has been on life support, leaving John without a concrete person to report to.
Bernie Siegal threatens him to stay away from the case, but John is not going to slow down, not now, as the case has turned out to be darker than he imagined. He also happens to see one of the rooms in Jonathan Siegalโs house, which only makes him more aware of his obsession with his wife. However, he is not yet able to figure out how his wife, Oliviaโs mother, and the photograph are connected to each other.ย
How did Davy know Stallings?ย
John also pays a visit to Davyโs place, but Margit is like a rock trying to protect her son from any possible inconvenience. She is not interested in John talking to Davy and once again clarifies and stands by her sonโs behavior. John is adamant, and Davy, who has been hearing everything from the other room, decides to talk to him in spite of the threat Margit thinks he can bring to her son.
For the first time in the show, a really anxious Davy comes clean to Sugar about doing bad things. He makes sure he blames all of it on him being famous and women throwing themselves at him. This is classic predatory behavior where the predator blames the victim for his own faults.ย
John, however, isnโt particularly interested in knowing why Davy did all those things. He is there to understand how Olivia’s disappearance is connected to it. He questions Davy about Olivia, and we hear his association with Stallings coming to the foreground.
Davy tells Sugar that he met Stallings when he got to know that he could get girls for his pleasure if offered the right price. These girls were immigrants who would be forced into this by Stallings, who is a human trafficker.
What does Davy tell John about Olivia?
During their conversation, John keeps insisting on Oliviaโs whereabouts, and Davy finally confesses that he might have asked Stallings to take care of his half-sister when she became persistent about Taylor sticking to her story and bringing Davyโs behavior out in public. Again, he tries to cover up his behavior by saying that he only did it because his new movie was coming out and the news would ruin his reputation. He then tells John about Stallingsโ address.ย
Who is Miller?
On Rubyโs front, we see her driving to a secluded place and meeting Miller, whom we had only heard of till now. From the looks of it, we can see that he is Rubyโs superior and possibly the one who runs the agency that John Sugar is a part of.
She tells him that John is knee-deep in his present case, and when he comes closer to the conclusion, he might not be too aware of why things are the way they are. From what I can figure out, Miller and the others are aware of Stallings, and they are also enablers because taking him out of the equation may hamper the โbalance.โย
Ruby tells him that it is difficult to stop John because he comes from a moral high ground that they canโt understand. However, Miller tells her to ensure that he stays away from the case and not take it to heart.ย
What happens at Melanieโs place?
After suspecting Melanie in the previous episode, John had asked Charlie to keep an eye on her movements. When she returns back home after meeting her old acquaintance at the recording studio, we can see Charlieโs van parked outside her house. John drops in to check if there have been any updates on Melanieโs front. On realizing there isnโt much, he decides to take the night off. However, before he could leave her streets, he notices one of Stallingsโ vehicles parked nearby.ย
Meanwhile, when Melanie enters her home, she sees one of Stallingsโ men perched comfortably on her couch. When she feels threatened by his presence, she knocks him over and runs to the bathroom to hide. However, the man takes a drilling tool and starts breaking in. Melanie is cornered and scared for her life, but before the man can get to her, John steps in. He punches the man to a pulp, shocking both Charlie and Melaline and to an extent even himself.ย
Sugar Episode 5 โBoy in the Cornerโ Ending, Explained:ย
Why is Stallings in Mexico?
In the previous episode, we saw Stallings telling his associates that he wouldnโt be back until a few days. When Davy told John about him, he said that he would be back the next day. So, what exactly is he up to?ย
In a brief sequence, we see Stallings and his associates stopping a bus coming from Mexico towards the US border and rounding up all the girls who look traditionally pretty. Their business there is to take these girls away from the bus forcibly and trafficking them.ย
Is Davy dead?
The ending of Sugar Episode 5 shows an upset Davy being persuaded by her mother as he reminisces about the success he had with his debut โBoy in the Corner.โ Like a good mother, Margit ensures him that he will be back from the ground because he is backed by powerful people. However, we can see that the news has really shaken him, and he is now haunted by what he will be known as. He is also in a state of guilt by Sugarโs last words, which said that he was โsuppose to protect his sisterโ and not put her in harms way. So, after his mother retires for the night, he goes into the bathroom, takes out one of the mini-revolvers he had kept there and shoots himself in the head.ย
Margit calls Bernie, who, in a state of absolute panic, arrives, taking his only son to the hospital. Will Davy die? From the fatal shot, we can assume he will, and now that his character doesnโt serve much of a purpose to the narrative, he might be killed off.
Wil John tell his secret to Melanie?ย
The final moments of the episode show Melanie going to Johnโs hotel room after the mishap at her place. She takes up the couch as John goes to the shower and then writes about his freakout at her house today. John himself is not aware that he would react to something in such a violent way, but it feels like things are getting a little too murky for him.ย The episode ends with John, unable to sleep, going to the couch and lying beside Melanie on the floor. He tells her that he has a secret that he is unable to tell anyone. A consolidating Melanie offers him her ears.
Will John tell Melanie his secret? Does he trust her enough to tell whateverโs been haunting him? Who is he, really? These are a few questions that we have right now, and answers lie somewhere in the mystery of Sugar-land.ย
