The Big Door Prize (Season 1) Episode 5: The previous episode of โThe Big Door Prizeโ focused on Reubenโs conflict with being a father. Reuben believed that his Morpho card result did not mean priesthood but fatherhood. He was tired of everyone expecting him to be an expert on all the matters of God and the heart. He opens up about this pain with Hana in the end and dances along with her.
Now the show’s latest episode on Apple TV+ focuses on Trinaโs story and how she deals with the grief of her ex-boyfriendโs death. Meanwhile, Dusty and Cass go on a romantic getaway as a couple to explore new aspects of their relationship.
*spoilers ahead*
The Big Door Prize (Season 1) Episode 5 Recap:
Episode 5: Trina
Previously, we saw Trina (Djouliet Amara) working as one of the servers at the wedding ceremony held at Giorgioโs. She and Jacob (Sammy Fourlas) had still not revealed their relationship to anyone. Still, they enjoyed each other’s company during this ceremony. Meanwhile, Cass (Gabrielle Dennis) and Dusty (Chris OโDowd) start dancing together. Giorgio (Josh Segarra) was heartbroken seeing the couple being happy together. So, instead of working by himself, he makes Trina stay later after the party to clean up everything and then lock the doors. He expects Trina to do all of it despite not paying her for the work.
As a result, at the start of Episode 5, Trina is seen acting out on the neon-lit Giorgio’s sign over his restaurant. She smashes the lights on its first two letters to take out her anger. So the sign now says just โ โOrgioโsโ! Giorgio gets angry since people would think it has something to do with an orgy and laugh at him. He gets mad at Dusty and expects him to apologize for what his daughter did. Trina, however, does not care about Giorgioโs ego.
Back in her school, Father Reuben (Damon Gupton) speaks with Trina about her ex-boyfriend, Kolton. Since it is Koltonโs birthday, Reuben asks how she is dealing with it. Since Koltonโs tragic car incident, she did not speak with anyone about her grief. She saysย her friends have started avoiding her because of it. Her parents’ overt affection did not help her either. She believes they all consider her to behave like a weeping widow. She does not want that. Reuben still advises her to find an outlet for her sorrow and not keep it bottled up.
Meanwhile, Pat (Cocoa Brown) takes back the charge as the school’s principal. She decides to fire their basketball coach Eagleson (Tim Perez-Ross) on the account of his Morpho card result being a โCheater.โ She considers it will be an issue in his teaching. He says that the card means infidelity, i.e., cheating on his partner. Still, she lets him go.
On the other hand, Pat also argues with Dusty about getting a tattoo. Dusty says that he only wanted to help a teacher whose card result said, โTattoo Artist.โ He believed she will be skilled with needles. Pat, however, thinks that it is more of his midlife crisis talking. So she gives him a leave to go out for a romantic getaway with Cass. She also offers discount coupons so that the two can celebrate their second honeymoon and sort out their issues during their alone time.
Meanwhile, Koltonโs twin brother, Jacob, worries how awkward it would be to stay with his father, Beau (Aaron Roman Weiner), on his birthday. Beau is still not over Koltonโs death. So, Trina offers to join him for their movie night and be a buffer between him and Beau. Then Savannah (Elizabeth Hunter) interrupts their dialogue and says how attractive Kolton is. While Kolton leaves, she keeps texting another friend about a party. Unfortunately, Trina isn’t invited because they believe she would be a bummer and unknowingly ruin their fun.
So, Trina returns home, hoping to spend time with her parents. Instead, she finds an empty house. She calls Cass and learns that she and Dusty are driving away to spend time on their own. Cass asks whether they should return to give her some company. Trina tells them not to return and says that now she can have a rager in their absence. So, Trina masks her loneliness by pretending that she is doing fine.
Where does Dusty take Cass for a getaway?
Meanwhile, Cass learns only during the car ride that Dusty is taking her to Martha and Roseโs Inn. She is still not over Izzyโs (Crystal Fox) taunts about how Martha (Susan Savoie) left her because of her child. Cass considers their divorce as her fault. However, Dusty still insists they should go to the inn. He wants Cass to see it as an opportunity to let go of their past.
Anyhow, the two reach a lavish villa and enter to find it decorated to appear like a cruiseโs interior. Rose (Schelle Purcell) invites the couple as the captain. Dusty sees the safety guidelines pamphlet that has his father as a model. Then Martha takes them on a tour. Since Rose liked cruise ships and she is more of a homebody, Martha decided to start this business. She takes them to their room with a bunk bed. Cass immediately thinks that Martha is giving them the worst room. Dusty still tries to cheer her up. It may just be how Rose adjusted the discount of their coupon, but Cass can’t stop seeing anything but red flags about Martha.
Back at Jacobโs place, Trina joins him for his 17th birthday. She gifts him a broken ashtray and greets him with a card for surviving 17 years. He shows her an empty Morpho card that he had taken out from the machine. She says how they could have written anything on that card and made people believe that is their potential. Then, they ruminate over their memories about Kolton and wonder what result he would have gotten. Jacob feels like Kolton would have gotten an โAngelโ since everyone saw him that way.
Meanwhile, at the holiday inn, Dusty and Cass meet a younger couple โ Hawaii (Emily Topper) and Glen (Rory Keane). They discuss their Morpho results. Glen feels happy to have gotten a โphotographerโ as his result. He started getting lost in the woods, clicking their photographs. He claims to have found his passion through this.
On the other hand, Hawaiiโs result was an โExplorer,โ and instead of considering it as a person who travels around the world to explore things, she concluded it as a ‘sexual explorer’. Since then, she started exploring different possibilities of sex with different partners since her not-so-attractive husband did not see it as a problem. Hawaii believes that anyone’s Morpho results are just indicators of their potential. What they make of their results is their choice.
While this whole interaction irks Dusty and Cass, they still appreciate it as learning a new perspective. During their dialogue, Hawaii casually throws around terms from her sexual adventure, which makes Dusty and Cass contemplate sexual chemistry between them.
Soon after, Hawaii invites herself to their room, expecting a threesome. It throws them off-guard, and they get into a closet to think over it. Have they lost their spark? Have they lost the urge to have new adventures? Should they be okay with their mundane lives? They contemplate their openness to their secret desires and then come out to have a threesome.
Dusty starts undressing during their foreplay for Hawaii. But he forgets to take off his shoes before his pants and falls over his head. Since he gets injured, Cass goes out to get some ice. Meanwhile, Hawaii stays back in the room and notices blue squares on his back. Dusty learns only then that there are more squares now.
What do Cass and Martha talk about? Did Martha and Izzy get divorced because of Cass?
While getting the ice, Cass notices Martha standing by herself. She joins her for a small talk. Since there’s no one else around them, Cass brings up the subject of Martha and Izzyโs divorce. She asks whether they got separated because of her. Martha says that it had nothing to do with Cass. They got divorced because of their issues that were there long before Cass was born. While moving to Deerfield, Martha thought that Izzy would leave her dancing career behind and start her life afresh. But the issues did not go away despite their big move, and so they decided to get separated.
Martha still asked to have a relationship with Cass. But Izzy said that Cass does not like her, and so Martha decided to support her wishes. So this conversation became an icebreaker (No pun intended!) for them to mend their relationship. Anyhow, Cass returns to their room to find Hawaii clicking a photo of Dustyโs back. Despite how weird it looked, Cass did not care about it. She was so hurt by her motherโs betrayal that she asked him to go back home.
Why did Kolton like My Best Friendโs wedding?
Jacob, Trina, and Beau get together to watch a movie. Beau decides to watch The Magnificent Seven since he believes Kolton loved it. But Trina and Jacob choose My Best Friendโs Wedding and says Kolton rather loved that. Once they finish watching the movie, Beau criticizes Julia Robertsโ character. He does not like that she tries to break her best friendโs marriage. Also, he can’t imagine Kolton liking a movie like this.
Trina and Jacob say how Kolton liked many such 90โs rom-com movies and how his mom made him a fan of them. It reminded him of the times they used to do laundry together, which was when they watched these rom-com movies. Those memories make Beau emotional about Kolton and how good he and Trina were as a couple. Seeing Beau get vulnerable, Jacob decides to leave the room to let Beau have a word with Trina alone.
The Big Door Prize (Season 1) Episode 5 Ending, Explained:
What happened between Kolton and Cass before his death?
Once Jacob leaves, Beau tries to open up to Trina about Kolton. He feels regret for not making an effort to be as close to Kolton as she was. Beauโs remorse makes Trina feel a pang of guilt about her actions. So she decides to come clean. She says that she got a card that said โLiarโ (perhaps the same one that Dusty finds in the dustbin).
She says how she was a worse girlfriend to Kolton and confesses to cheating on him. Beau cannot bear that sadness and, thus, tells her to leave. Then, he goes to Jacob to say that he does not want any secrets between them henceforth. He wants their relationship to be more honest. He also says that Trina left and how they just have each other. After this dialogue, Beau goes out to chainsaw some pieces of wood.
Why does Beau chainsaw wood in the end?
There is no clear explanation as to why Beau does it. However, it seems like the usual stress- reliever for him. So, a possible explanation is, he wanted to ease his numbing pain about Cass’ revelation. Besides, now that he knows Cass cheated on Kolton, she does not have any person to speak to about his memories and regrets. Since the next episode is titled ‘Beau,’ it will hopefully dig deeper into his psyche.
