The Big Door Prize (Season 2), Episodes 1, 2 & 3: The first season of “The Big Door Prize” followed the lives of Deerfield residents, who discovered a new, miraculous machine in their small town. They became concerned about whether they were living their lives to their complete potential.
After going through the stories of these people, the first season ended on a cliffhanger. It showed Hana with blue dots on her body, similar to what Dusty had on his. The Deerfield residents came together at the local store to see a message on the Morpho machine – ‘Are you ready for the next stage?’ Now, “The Big Door Prize” season 2 shows the Deerfield residents trying to know the meaning behind the elusive message on the Morpho machine and preparing for the next stage. Dusty and Cass take an important step in their relationship.
Spoilers ahead.
The Big Door Prize (Season 2) Episode 1 “The Next Stage” Recap:
Before coming to Deerfield, Hana (Ally Maki) used to work at a bar somewhere else. That’s where she met Kolton (Sammy Fourlas), who arrived at her bar with his father, Beau’s (Aaron Roman Weiner) ID proof. Kolton asked for a drink, and Hana gave him a ginger ale. Before he left, she noticed blue dots on his back similar to hers. Not just that, the bar also had a Morpho machine. A while after his visit, she decided to go meet him in Deerfield. She saw Jacob and mistook him for Kolton. Mr Johnson (Patrick Kerr) told her about Kolton’s death.
After that, Hana stayed back at Deerfield, working for a local bar. Soon after, she overheard Principal Pat (Cocoa Brown) talk about her Morpho card result as a ‘biker.’ That’s how Hana learned that a Morpho machine is also in Deerfield. It surprised her but she didn’t check her life’s potential on it. Meanwhile, other people learned about it and started checking for their results. Eventually, after their local festival, the residents saw a blue light beaming out of their local store. They walked in there, and Hana followed them. She knew that the machine had never done that before.
The Morpho Machine
The Deerfield residents see a message on the Morpho machine that says, ‘Are you ready for the next stage?’ They all start discussing what it means. Unlike the bar where Hana worked before, the Deerfield residents took the Morpho card results seriously. They also started supporting each other’s hopes and dreams. Cass (Gabrielle Dennis) reveals that she also has blue dots on her body, like Hana and Dusty. Meanwhile, Nat (Mary Holland) decides to spend the night with Giorgio (Josh Segara) at his house. Earlier, at the festival, they confessed their feelings for one another. So, this seems like a natural continuation of their relationship.
Beau joins Izzy (Crystal R Fox) to meet Mr Johnson in the hospital. Dr Woods (Carrie Barrett) thinks Izzy should wait till Mr Johnson wakes up. But Izzy doesn’t want that. So, she suddenly appoints Beau as the town sheriff and puts him on task to check on Mr Johnson. In reality, she just wants to bail on her responsibility. Back home, Dusty and Cass try to find a way to figure out their individual destinies without hurting Trina’s (Djouliet Amara) feelings. Meanwhile, Jacob goes to the store and tries to find a way to restart the Morpho machine. Hana joins him and reveals the truth about why she came to Deerfield.
How do Hana and Jacob unlock the next state?
Hana and Jacob figure out a way to make the Morpho machine work by imitating its tune on the theremin. By then, Dusty and Cass also figured out that using the theremin can unlock the next state on Morpho. Just when they arrive in the shop, the machine starts working again. This time, the user needs to put in their Morpho result card instead of a coin. Dusty decides to try it out first.
The Big Door Prize (Season 2) Episode 2 “Visions” Recap:
Earlier, Dusty deduced the meaning behind his potential as a ‘Teacher/Whistler.’ It didn’t mean that he could only be a teacher or a whistler. Instead, it meant he had the potential to keep working at Whistler, a place where he ice skated before marrying Cass. In the present, he puts his Morpho Potential card in the machine and sees a gamified version of himself skating on ice. He walks out of the machine and tells Cass to play it. Right after, they walk out and discuss what she saw. In her video, Cass saw her in the Deerfest stabbing Izzy multiple times.
Cass also saw herself dancing herself dancing on Izzy’s dead body and worries about it. Dusty thinks it is just a metaphor. In his video, he saw himself skating in Whistler. He thinks it implies the time he was there before their marriage when possibilities seemed endless. At the time, he wanted to stay there longer. But he also didn’t want to lose Cass. That’s why he abandoned his ambition. But he is not sure if he wants to pursue the same goal again. Yet, for the time being, they decide to take steps to figure out what they want to do with their lives. For that, they plan to live separately in the same house. Dusty will live in the basement, while Cass will carry on as usual.
Giorgio & Nat
Before starting to live separately, Cass and Dusty decide to join Nat for dinner at Giorgio’s house. That’s where they meet Father Reuben (Damon Gupton) and Hana. Giorgio claims Hana had feelings for him. Right after, Nat announces her relationship with Giorgio. During dinner, they all discuss the scenes they saw in the Morpho. Reuben believes those visions are like dreams. Cass and Dusty reveal their new plan of separation. It leads to a conversation about Giorgio potentially pursuing Cass again. So, to stop the issue from getting worse, Giorgio asks Nat’s hand for marriage. Nat accepts his proposal.
Trina stays back home and invites friends to a party. But, unlike Kolton, Jacob isn’t used to hosting parties. So, he is anxious and confused about how to behave. While one of their classmates was sharing her vision, he interrupted the conversation. He thinks he needs to be enthusiastic like his brother. Trina senses that and tries to relax him. But she gets emotional thinking her parents are planning to live their lives separately. Jacob tries to calm her down. Since her parents are planning to find their next step, he offers to join Trina when she knows hers.
Father Reuben decides to be more than just a priest and give others life advice. He wants to rediscover joy himself. In the Morpho, he saw a vision of him, as a child, playing with his dad. It leads him to his new decision. Meanwhile, Dusty tells Cass that he doesn’t want to go to Whistler anymore. In his vision, he saw himself stopping every time he came close to something that scared him. He always pulled back and took an easy path.
So, he sees it as a representation of his life. While he accepts that he wants to stay in Whistler for longer, Cass admits that she also wants to stay in Italy for longer. Cass reveals that she saw her gamified version also jumping on Dusty’s body. She decodes this scene as she and Dusty try to find their new directions. While they discuss their paths, Jacob and Izzy walk into the store to check out their next stage on the Morpho machine.
The Big Door Prize (Season 2) Episode 3 “Power & Energy” Recap:
Trina & Jacob use the Morpho machine one by one to see their next stage’s vision. In her video, Trina sees herself in a series of scenes that show her confronting her past and deciding who she wants to be. Jacob sees himself playing a tennis video game with Kolton. He tries to record it on his phone. But he can’t see it once he gets out of the machine. Later, he breaks open Kolton’s school locker and takes out all his old stuff. Before he throws it out, Trina takes out a soft toy with a pre-recorded message in her voice. In it, she said she loved Kolton.
Jacob gets upset, thinking Trina wants to keep it. He thinks it means she is not over her feelings for Kolton. Trina says her feelings for Kolton don’t diminish her feelings for him. He and Kolton represent a different part of her life. So, she wants to hold on to something as a memory of what she lost. Upon hearing that, Jacob also takes something from that bag as a sign of Kolton’s memory.
Dusty & Alice
The school sees a sudden increase in people quitting jobs. So, Principal Pat gets concerned and asks her teaching staff for solutions. Dusty states the obvious – Morpho machine results are making people rethink their lives. He says the school needs to revamp its curriculum to inspire students to new possibilities. Only one of his colleagues, Alice Wickstead (Justin Lupe), enthusiastically cheers for his idea. After their meeting, she asks Dusty out on a date under the guise of a discussion about the new curriculum. They decide to meet that evening at Giorgio’s restaurant.
When Dusty arrives at the restaurant, Giorgio continues to tease him as he usually does. But he is surprised to see Dusty have a date. He offers them a table and champagne. While having dinner, Dusty & Alice exchange ideas about their students’ curriculum. Alice swings that discussion back to their date. She says she finds Dusty’s accent sexy. Giorgio interrupts their conversation to tell Dusty that his credit card has been declined. Because of that, he decides to call Cass.
The Big Door Prize (Season 2) Episode 3 “Power & Energy” Ending Explained:
How do Dusty & Cass spend their first day living separately?
While Dusty meets Alice at the restaurant, Cass goes to Martha’s (Susan Savoie) cruise inn to stay for a party. She didn’t know that Izzy was also going to be there to give a speech. By then, Izzy had heard about Cass’ vision, where she stomps over her dead body. Cass decides to keep a safe distance from her mother. Later, she still gets angry at her. Hana, who also happens to be there, finds her anger justified. Suddenly, Cass receives a call from Dusty about their credit card. While talking, he realizes that she is possibly at a club. He tries to cover up the fact that he is on a date with someone else.
Soon after, Cass has a heart-to-heart chat with Hana. Cass mimics Dusty, Reuben, and Hana. She also pokes Hana about her and Reuben’s interest in each other. After a brief chat, Hana decides to leave Cass on her own. Cass finds the idea of spending the night by herself a bit daunting. Meanwhile, Alice and Dusty walk back home together. Alice says that her Morpho-dictated potential is to be a cellist. But she still wants to find a new way to be happy in the life she has chosen. Then, Dusty ruminates over other possibilities of his life. Eventually, they end the night by hugging each other. While that happens, Beau finds Mr Johnson outside a shop by himself. He says he doesn’t want to be alone.
