The Girl Locked Upstairs: The Tanya Kach Story (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
The film starts with Tanya locked inside a cupboard. Her captor, Hose, opens the door and wishes her well after coming from the mass. Tanya asks whether she can stay outside the cupboard for the night. But Hose threatens her and locks her inside again. Later, we go back to the time when Tanya is being introduced to her new high school by her friend, who does not seem very interested in being her friend at all.
Anyway, with time, Tanya finds it really hard to cope with the surroundings because no one really likes her that much. One day, Tanya meets with Mr. Hose, and from that point onward, they start meeting regularly inside the school campus. Hose works as a security guard. He is very strict with other students except for Tanya. This somehow makes Tanya think that Hose is a good person and that he is quite sympathetic toward her.
How do Tanya and Hose become Friends?
Now, there are certain things that we must keep in mind while questioning Tanya about picking up friends. She is going through a rough patch because her foster parents do not live together. Her mother does not pick up her phone, nor does she call her. Tanya tries to be friends with a few students, but they all behave badly with her. In this moment of crisis, Hose is the only person who offers comfort to this teenager.
One day, a fight breaks out between one of the students and Tanya when Hose breaks it off, making sure that Tanya is unharmed. However, Tanya has lost her necklace to the other student. A few days later, Hose gives her a necklace as he has promised. This gesture and Hose’s continuous care for her put Tanya in a place where she fully trusts him. Hose even helps Tanya reach her mother. When she rejects her, Tanya comes to Hose’s house to spend the night.
Why does Tanya fail to Leave Hose’s House?
Hose convinces Tanya that since her mother does not take her, she must not leave his house because she will not be safe out there. Also, Hose leaves with his parents and he tells Tanya that if they know about her, they will not let Hose keep her in the house. So, either way, Tanya needs to stay quiet if she wants to stay. The following morning, Hose drops Tanya at his friend Judy’s house. He says that she will not be going to school anymore because he convinces Tanya that he will only be able to keep her safe as long as he stays close to him.
Tanya then tells Judy that she and Hose are now a couple, and she is spending nights with him in his house. Judy understands how disturbing this is. Therefore, she suggests to Tanya to try talking to her mother about the situation once again. Maybe the mother will allow her to stay with her. But Tanya’s mother, Christie, does not even pick up her phone. Anyway, Tanya knows that she has basically nowhere to go. The friend with whom she was staying before meeting Hose is not interested in taking her back.
Amidst all of this, Hose gives Tanya the impression that he is somehow protecting her from the outside world. However, he never mentions anything about what threat lies outside. Hose takes advantage of the vulnerability of a teenager. He sexually assaults Tanya and locks her inside the room. The man always tells her that if she ever leaves the room, she will be in danger. Moreover, he warns that if she ever tries to leave the house, he will kill her. Tanya does not know what to do except write about her experience because he had told her to write about it.
How does Hose introduce Tanya to His Parents?
Four or five years have passed. Tanya never leaves the room except when Hose’s parents are not around. She spends her days rearranging clothes and looking out of the window. She can’t even walk freely because it may make some noise, which will make Hose’s parents suspicious. When Tanya is 18, Hose says that he will let her go shopping. But he gives her a deadline and other instructions to follow. Years later, Tanya is finally able to walk freely out in the street.
She goes to this store right beside the church, where she buys new clothes and is warmly greeted by the owner of the store. Tanya returns back to Hose’s house on time. This makes Hose think that she can sometimes actually go outside shopping. So, with time, Tanya becomes a familiar face as she is well-loved by the local store owners, Tony and his wife. They find her very adorable. Tanya, on the other hand, sees them as kind persons, kinder than anyone she has ever met.
But when Hose’s father becomes ill, his parents stop leaving the house, resulting in Tanya’s old, closed-in life. When Tanya proposes to Hose that she can take care of his parents, he comes up with the idea of introducing her as his girlfriend, Nikki. So, Nikki meets with Hose’s parents. She is not really loved by them because she does not know much about household work. Anyway, she receives minimal freedom to go anywhere inside the house.

So, after ten years, she finally gathers the courage and looks into the eye of the policeman, hoping that he will recognize her from the missing girl’s list.
But the policeman does not recognize her. Soon after, Tanya decides to open up about everything. She goes to Tony and explains that she is not Nikki.
