The Mosquito Coast (Season 2), Episode 9: The Mosquito Coast is an ambitious project. While showing the struggle of the Fox family for survival, it touches upon several pressing issues in our lives, from consumerism and bureaucracy to the incompetent education system that builds incompetent adults. Unfortunately, its criticism is often too on-the-face to take it seriously and its structure too scattered to take these larger themes into consideration. While occasionally, it takes us through the emotional landscapes of its characters with competent storytelling, it often resorts to shots and scenes that do not come together as a cohesive unit.

The previous episode showed Allie and Charlie bond despite the hiccups in their relationship; Dina and Margot are trying their own ways to secure a future safer than their present.

The Mosquito Coast (Season 2) Episode 9 Recap:

Counterfeiters

Where does Dina go after the escape?

Directed by Metin Hüseyin, the ninth episode titled ‘Counterfeiters’ navigates the family’s survival strategy after Dina’s (Logan Polish) escape from the rainforest. Allie (Justin Theroux) and Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) reach the shore to speak with Adolfo (Alejandro Akara) near his boat. He does not reveal Dina’s location but notes that she does not want to return and to let her lead her life the way they want. Allie is not one to accept such a defeat and is determined to know where his daughter is. Charlie is still under Allie’s influence and cannot envision a future without this idealistic father of his.

That is why he is not ready when Margot (Melissa George) asks him whether he would be open to returning to the US and escaping this uncertain life. Margot realizes that he is not sharing something about Dina that he and Allie have an idea of. While she notices that she is focused on making their family get out of the hellhole their idealistic vision has gotten them into, which does not let their kids lead the life they wish. She keeps communicating with JJ Raban (Matt McCoy) to get immunity for her and her kids in exchange for data from Richard Beaumont (Ariyon Bakare) about his plans.

Since JJ only gives verbal assurance, she warns him to provide a written document from the NSA to ensure the safety of the deal for herself and her family. Meanwhile, Isela (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) returns to her place to find Allie and asks what he is doing on her computer. He shows her the photographs, which reveal hidden drugs in the forest that Guillermo is smuggling to earn profits for himself while using both as his pawns due to their idealistic intent. An enemy’s enemy is a friend. Guillermo is using that strategy.

Isela thinks that, through this, Allie wants to be the landlord instead of Guillermo. Allie wants a piece of land in exchange for keeping this data a secret. Their conversation gets interrupted when Guillermo’s men invade their space as usual and are looking for Allie Fox. Since she does not take them to him immediately, they harass the locals. While Isela walks out, Allie stays in – to finish his task of transferring those photos to the cloud.

The Mosquito Coast Season 2 Episode 9 Recap

Guillermo’s men create unnecessary havoc in the community, and Charlie, who had gotten emotionally closer to the locals, cannot tolerate them vandalizing their space. As a result of his anger, he lashes out at one of the foot soldiers and tries to stop him from destroying their belongings. The man hits back, and in concern for this kid, Silvia (Claudia Pineda) tries to block him and ends up getting her throat slashed in the wide open. The locals witness this horror and when the men leave, they try to heal her. Allie, by that time, comes out of his room and tries to relieve his son, who witnesses another traumatic incident in his life.

Meanwhile, Dina goes to a nearby town and initially tries to pass off as a local, despite looking more obviously like an American. She tries to peddle her way through the streets and finally feels a sense of freedom from the constant pressure of being right in every situation. She soon enters a luxury resort and pretends to be a child of one of the white, wealthy families. By now, she seems to have learned the ways of faking her identity to get what she wants. So, she effortlessly passes through the corridors, hotel rooms, and their personal stuff without anyone’s notice or suspicion.

When she gets hungry, she goes to the food lounge and orders some fast food, probably to satiate her hunger for leading a normal life. That, however, does not please her since her upbringing had been to seek better nutrients just as better morals and values. Even when she looks at the privileged guests around her or tries to have a conversation with two girls of her age, she feels a sense of otherness for not knowing their way of plastic sophistication.

Meanwhile, Allie meets with Guillermo, who asks him why he is wasting his time and not finishing up his task, for which he was given just 72 hours. Allie directly threatens to reveal his secret stash and expose to the locals that he is a traitor. In exchange for not letting them get out, he wants ownership of a piece of land on his property. However, Guillermo is so enveloped in his greed that he even goes to his sister for financial support. He also seems to be okay with going against their noble cause and supporting her with her project in Virid.

Back in the forest, Margot informs JJ about Richard’s upcoming plan and fears that it is not safe as he claims it to be. While she tries to find this way to be safe as a family, Allie is worried if his deal with Guillermo has a future. Even when Margot passionately mentions being closer to gaining immunity, he does not look the least bit bothered by it. He cannot seem to get over his hatred toward the government.

Meanwhile, Charlie questions the necessity of her murder and the fairness of this incident. Allie stoically answers his questions in the best way he can. By then, they both learn that Silvia could not survive the intense blood loss. While processing her loss, the father-son duo gets together to know where Dina is and to keep their family together.

The Mosquito Coast (Season 2) Episode 9 Ending Explained:

Does Allie manage to trace Dina’s location?

Margot fakes her intentions with Richard to get her way reaching close to the location where Richard’s idealistic mission is about to take place. Upon seeing some authorities trying to look into the matter, Richard understands right away that Margot is behind this betrayal. He seems genuinely heartbroken due to this sabotage, while he genuinely trusts her. Meanwhile, Allie & Charlie pretend to be Adolfo while speaking with Dina on the phone; they receive a text from her about her current location. He feels a sense of victory despite using his daughter’s vulnerability for his benefit.

Meanwhile, Richard speaks with Guillermo about proceeding with their mutual plan, which rings a bail about something terrible that is about to happen. While speaking on the phone, Richard is at the same resort where Dina is currently staying. It seems to be that they have joined hands against the Fox family members, who are determined to take down at least one of them. It is still vague what these two minds will do together, but it seems to involve using Dina as a tool to take their revenge.
