The crime drama television series “The Sopranos” creators, filmmaker David Chase and executive producer Terence Winter are collaborating once again. But this time, they will take up an entirely different genre than before. Their new project isn’t any sort of crime thriller like their previous work, rather this time the duo will be working on the horror genre. Chase, who is primarily known for helming crime drama genre films, will now provide his directorial vision to a horror genre film. He will not only be directing the film, but Chase will also write and co-produce with Winter.
According to Deadline, the duo will make the movie at New Line Cinemas, a studio with a rich history of horror from A Nightmare on Elm Street to It. The upcoming film is part of Chase’s first-look deal with Warner Bros, the corporate parent of New Line Cinema. The details of the upcoming project have been kept under wraps. Hence, details regarding the cast and premises are scarce. The film marks the collaboration between Chase and Winter after more than a decade. The last time they worked together was at the 2007 finale of “The Sopranos.”
Although Chase has no experience in directing a horror film, he does have some experience in the genre. Prior to helming The Sopranos, Chase was a story editor on Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Â a TV series that explored supernatural phenomena, from aliens to demons to werewolves. He has also written the novel that inspired the 1972 blockbuster film Grave of the Vampire.Â
What did David Chase and Terence Winter do after the finale of ‘The Sopranos’?
David Chase directed the HBO drama The Sopranos, which aired for six seasons between 1999 and 2007. When the show finally ended in 2007, Chase took a multi-year hiatus from the screen only to make a robust comeback with his feature directorial debut in 2012 with the musical coming-of-age drama Not Fade Away. The film reunited him with James Gandolfini, who featured as the lead protagonist in The Sopranos. In 2021, he wrote and produced The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel to The Sopranos.Â
Meanwhile, Winter has remained active in television production, with credits including Boardwalk Empire and The Wolf of Wall Street, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The upcoming untitled project will be produced by Chase and Nicole Lambert (The Many Saints of Newark) for Riverain Pictures. Rachel Winter (The Space Between) via Tangerine Pictures and Winter via Cold Front Productions will executive produce.Â
The upcoming horror movie on which the team behind “The Sopranos” will collaborate does not have a release date yet.Â
