American sports comedies are always fun to watch. However, when it comes to ranking them, MGM’s “The Underdoggs” is certainly heading to the top. Starring Snoop Dogg, this film is genuinely funny, if not a bit bizarre at times. Featuring a cast of brilliant child actors alongside Mike Epps and Andrew Schulz, the film provides one of the funniest viewing experiences of 2024 so far. The story serves as a tribute to Snoop Dogg’s contributions to his community and showcases the massive impact he has on the lives of many children. Overall, this film is a must-watch, and if you haven’t seen it already don’t waste this weekend on anything else. Spoilers Ahead!

The Underdoggs (2024) Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis:

The film starts with our lead character Jaycen about how he started his magnificent career with a one handed catch at American Soccer. From that point onward, Jaycen never had to look back at anything. He became one of the top players in American Soccer. But, soon came a time of depression where we see Jaycen falling from his peak. Once a big star falls, the whole media pushes it on the news so much that there is no turning back, especially if one doesn’t have the resilience. Jaycen did not have that, so he became a joke in American Soccer.

How does Jaycen end up being a Coach?

Now, almost 20 years later, he is doing podcasts and sharing life experiences. He is living a dull life with literally no contribution to society. Well, he shares some good talks through his podcasts. Therefore, in some way, he is contributing to the youth of society. Anyway, he calls his manager Ryan Kauffman as together they have planned to restore Jaycen’s image through these podcasts. Ryan seems to be hanging on Jaycen, so he loses his temper and goes straight to Ryan’s office. Ryan advises Jaycen to do some social service as it is a good PR stunt.

Jaycen is really not up for helping out others, so he leaves the building angrily. Outside, he meets with a kid with whom he behaves very poorly. Later, he drives his car at full speed and quite recklessly which results in an accident. Jaycen, with a neckband, stands inside the court waiting for the judgment for reckless driving and damaging public goods. Judge Tara has known Jaycen since his childhood, as they were born in the same neighborhood. Tara wants to punish Jaycen in a different way than usual. So, she sentences Jaycen with three hundred hours of community service.

Jaycen, with much dislike, visits Long Beach and meets with his oldest friend Kareem. Later, we see him cleaning the park, picking up dog poop while some kids mess with him. After that, he learns that those kids play soccer, and their coach has left them without a clue. He thinks this is a perfect opportunity because if he coaches them, it will spread the good word in the market, and people will feel, especially Judge Tara, that Jaycen is contributing the most to the community’s wellness. This will eventually restructure his career and will make him the talk of the town again.

How does Jaycen manage to Coach the Kids?

Jaycen, just like he has taken his talent for granted, takes the responsibility of being the coach very lightly. There were many kids with different issues that Jaycen overlooked in the beginning. Jaycen’s archrival Chip Collins, who always points out Jaycen’s flaws on television, brings in his team of children and beats Jaycen’s team very badly. Jaycen realizes that coaching is going to be tougher than becoming a player on his own. He starts concentrating on the little things and tries to correct them on his own.

For example, Tre, the most talented player in the squad, used to play on his own, resulting in frustration inside the team. Jaycen finds himself seeing his style of play. He talks to Tre, making him understand that individuals sometimes matter in big games, but it is the team that wins the tournament. Even for Tony, who used to lie to his parents about Math classes, Jaycen teaches him to stand up against his parents. Bit by bit, the children of the team start finding the right direction, and Jaycen becomes the reason behind it.

What Makes Jaycen Leave the Opportunity of Fox Sports?

Jaycen brings in so many changes to the team. The children have a new jersey with not only the numbers but their names on it. As the league begins, Jaycen’s team performs brightly from the start throughout. In the end, at the finals, they face their old rivals, Chip Collins’ team. Jaycen’s work so far with the team has been well-received by the American people, and now Ryan calls Jaycen to inform him that his community service finally pays off. Jaycen is called to host his own podcast on Fox Sports. This is one hell of an opportunity Jaycen has always dreamt of.

But, the problem is, Jaycen is required to be on Fox Sports on Sunday – the day of the final. Jaycen is in a dilemma, and seeing him in such a condition brings despair to the team. They believe that Jaycen, being a selfish old man as always, will definitely pick the opportunity over the game on Sunday. Jaycen visits his first coach ever, Coach Feis, to seek a solution. Feis does not have enough time to talk to him as he needs to see his family. On Sunday, we see Jaycen on Fox Sports while his team is ready to face Chip Collins.

But, surprisingly, the word ‘family’ hits Jaycen in a very different way. He remembers all the faces he has spent time with within the last few days. He understands Coach Feis’ words that he needs to see his family. Fox is not Jaycen’s family, it never will be. He realizes that his family is out there, playing his archenemy Chip Collins. He leaves Fox, saying that he needs to go to the bathroom on a Live show to meet with his team.

Does Jaycen’s team win the final?

No. Jaycen’s team loses the final by a mere 3 points or perhaps a mere 3 inches as Tony fails to touchdown in the final moment. But the game was never about winning. It was the beginning of Tre as a leader. When the team was nowhere near winning, in the break, it was Tre who stood up and inspired the whole team, saying that they were underdogs and they were never going to break down. It was the beginning of Coach Jaycen, who left his dream job to support his family – his team.

Overall, the feeling of community is vastly explored through the little details in the film. Jaycen’s life changed completely from being a selfish old man to one of the finest coaches on that level. All thanks to Judge Tara who seeks the opportunity to turn a man into something he never would have imagined to be.
