Velma Season 1- Episodes 3 and 4: Recap and Ending Explained: Fred Jones went to prison, Norville ‘Shaggy’ Rogers saw Velma Dinkley and Daphne Blake kiss, and Aman Dinkley was a wreck after his client incriminated himself. Velma also learned that her mother’s phone last pinged near Fred’s house. Things began okay on the mystery front. But the woke side saw garbage spewed again over the next two episodes.

Velma (Season 1), Episodes 3 Recap:

Velma Kai

The episode began right where the previous one finished. Daphne walked away and wished Velma luck after the kiss. The following day Velma was in a daydream, and it seemingly continued until she reached High School. Norville revealed that he saw the kiss and let slip that his father would run a Mental Health Assembly to help students process the murders.

At the assembly, female students were informed that they would have to take a self-defense class. Velma was enraged that there was a women’s self-defense class for girls but no “Don’t Murder Girls” class for boys. The teachers for the same were Daphne’s mom.

Velma and Norville went to meet Fred in jail. Once in the meeting area, Velma began hallucinating. Norville’s honesty provided her the amusement to snap out of it. Velma then got pinned by the guards and banned from the prison.

Dinkley returned to the gym, where she was picked to participate in the self-defense demo against Daphne. They then ran out and took refuge in the restroom temporarily. The two spoke and agreed that they didn’t like each other in that way.

Once back in the gym, Daphne kicked Velma brutally to earn a stunned reaction. The girls were then informed of a self-defense tournament to determine the school’s least vulnerable girl.

In jail, Fred looked scared when Norville asked questions and tried to get out of the meeting. Norville angrily head-butted an inmate. The episode then moved to Mr. Rogers’ office, where he informed his son that the most crucial thing a therapist needs is a cardigan. He handed it over to Norville.

Velma recalled her kiss with Daphne and admitted that she still liked Daphne in that way. Norville’s cardigan trick worked on Fred, who was initially reluctant to continue therapy. The convict revealed that his father wanted to burn the house down for insurance. Norville attracted a huge crowd of subjects at the prison.

Velma and Daphne advanced to the finals of the self-defense tournament. Just before the match, Daphne sweep kicked her friend in the restroom. In the match, Velma showed Daphne that she had flicked her journal. She proceeded to read entries from there to destroy Daphne’s popularity. The audience, on the other hand, interpreted it as harassment and turned on Velma.

Mr. Rogers spoke to Velma in his office about the incident and told her that she would need to apologize to Daphne. In her usual style, she dissed him for not having the cardigan. Norville then recollected his prison conversation with Fred, thereby showing Fred was innocent of Diya Dinkley’s disappearance.

Velma apologized to Daphne for reading her journal to the students in attendance at the gym. Daphne revealed she was talking to Mr. Rogers as searching for her birth parents saw abandonment issues come up again. They had a casual handshake after talking things out.

As Norville missed the therapy session with the inmates, a riot broke out, and the prison was ablaze. Norville saw a card fall out and asked his father for an explanation. He then used the cardigan, and Mr. Rogers promised to tell Norville a secret about his mother.

Velma (Season 1), Episode 4 Recap:

Velma Makes a List

The episode began with Velma talking about her pride in never fitting in. We then saw the locality have a two-week murder-free celebration. Things hadn’t changed, though, as the popular clique still lorded over the rest. A character then revealed that another body was found with her brain removed.

Velma (Season 1), Episodes 3 and 4: Recap and Ending Explained

At a town hall, the Mayor told the audience that Fred would be exonerated as he was in prison when the third murder occurred. Mr. Jones looked upset as he had turned Fred’s room into a skating rink.

The Mayor knew that the real murderer was still on the loose. The authorities also knew that they couldn’t protect every single student. Hence, they developed the HOPE (Hotties Only, Pukefaces Excluded) initiative. Per that, they would rank the five hottest girls and give them a security guard. Velma was furious and shut down as the speaker said she wouldn’t make a list. Dinkley spoke about how ranking girls saw the Trojan War and Facebook start.

Velma was tasked with creating the list and dealing with the potential candidates doing everything possible to be on it. Desperation took center stage, from plastering pictures on corridors to pole dancing on football goalposts.

Norville offered to help and then suggested Fred was an option to create that particular list. Fred Jones made a list and then received a book on Feminine Mystique. He confused it with the X-Men’s Mystique.

Daphne was placed under house arrest for safety reasons, and Norville visited her. Someone threw a rock-like object (Geode) through Daphne’s window. Flashbacks hinted at baby Daphne being abandoned at the place where the Geode’s came from, i.e., Crystal Cove Mines.

Velma took her list to the Mayor, who suggested she teach girls not to be hot. She agreed as it would see them break free from the shackles of the male gaze.

The hot girls visited Velma’s house for “Uggo lessons.” They called Daphne a queen bee and Velma as King Kong. Audiences then witnessed a montage of transformation as the hot girls went to school completely unrecognizable. However, when they were presented to the Mayor, they were back to square one. The girls refused to be transformed, believing that definitions of womanhood could be different. One girl labeled Velma’s definition as restrictive and claimed no one needs to change themselves.

Norville took Daphne for a history lesson on Geodes with Crystal Cove’s Crystal Mines. They then visited the Crystal Mines. Norville admitted he tried to make himself into Daphne to get Velma to like her. Daphne told him there was someone apart from Velma out there for him. The location appeared spooky, so he refused to be there and drove away. Daphne opted to follow him if she needed a lift.

Velma’s stepmother’s water broke, and Velma continued to be herself. When a differently dressed Dinkley heard her mother was having a baby, she questioned whether it was her choice or did society make her do it. Then when she saw that the baby was due, she tried to get help. However, everyone just stood with their phones and captured the incident.

Velma (Season 1), Episode 4 Ending, Explained:

As Norville and Daphne drove off, a man was shown in the vent. He gripped the grills and laughed smugly. Later, Fred showed up at the Dinkley house and presented a bouquet to Velma. He said it was because the mystique book opened his eyes to inner beauty. However, Velma rebuffed Fred and told him that she found him gross.

Is Crystal Cove Mines a significant location in the series?

Daphne’s flashbacks when she saw the images of Crystal Cove Mines led the audience to assume that she was abandoned there. The isolated and abandoned location in itself is a perfect setting for the crime. Factor in the laughing man over there, and we can safely say that Crystal Cove Mines will be a significant location. One can expect future episodes to steer Diya Dinkley’s investigation to the location.

Did Velma plan for Fred to come over to her house?

Velma is a brainiac and can manipulate people to do as she wants. She knew Fred had a thing for beauty and hence gave him the book to open his eyes to inner beauty. Velma may have hoped Fred’s thing for another form of attractiveness would have clicked, and he would fall for her. So it may have been the plan for her to get Fred to fall for her in that manner.

Why did Velma diss Fred?

Even if Velma planned that out, she might not have intended Fred visiting her house to be the endgame. Velma provoked Fred to come over and then gave him a dose of his own medicine by labeling him as “gross.” This would see him realize things he had said to other people in the past. The rejection would hit Fed’s ego and see him fall head over heels as he tried to win over Velma.

All characters (not Norville and Fred) are romantically showing interest in each other. Norville and‌ Daphne have been maintaining some distance, but that could change in the subsequent episode. Fred seems in the clear in the brain removal murders and the disappearance of Diya Dinkley. This origin story of Mystery Inc seems on track, but one wishes it was without the woke elements.
