She can go to any extent to make sure that her baby is safe and alive to see the world that’s beautiful in its own way. We have seen such determination of a mother in various films. Alber Pinto’s Nowhere (2023) delves into two different things that combine into a higher authority against nature’s ruthlessness: a mother’s determination and a human being’s survival instinct. Well, there comes a time when Mother Nature herself was pleased to see the effort Mia has put in and greets her in her own mystic ways.

It is a very hard time for the Spanish government as the regime has taken control, and they are killing women and children for fun. The main reason behind such conditions is unknown. But from the reports shown in the news, due to the shortages of the food supply, the old people are being executed. It is perhaps that the regime has taken control of the resources, and tyranny falls among the rest of the survivors.

Amidst such a situation, Mia and Nico lose their daughter Uma to the regime. When Nico is out searching for resources to feed his family, he reminds Mia not to go outside of the house. Since Uma is very little, she doesn’t want to be kept inside the house all day. She urges Mia to go outside for a while, and Mia should’ve known better. Uma is taken away by the regime and perhaps killed, too.

Nico runs away with Mia to find a place outside Spain where they can give birth to their new child. Mia is pregnant with another child, which is why they fear being caught, as apart from the older people, the regime is targeting pregnant women and children. Nico tries to keep his calm while Mia fears that she is on the verge of losing her whole family, including herself.

In What Circumstances Are Mia And Nico Separated?

As luck is not in their favor, Nico finds himself trapped in a very bizarre situation. His primary plan was to get onboard a truck that would help them reach a cargo ship. They would eventually reach the borders of Ireland. The Irish government is well aware of the situation, and Nico hopes that they will welcome them no matter what. However, things turned out to be very difficult right after they got into the truck.

The smugglers who are helping Nico, Mia, and a couple of other homeless individuals reach the cargo ship are doing it for money. Since most people were homeless, they took advantage of the situation and promised many men a way to get to the ship. When Nico and Mia’s container is filled with many people, they ask them to shift to another container. Nico is forced to go to container number 107 while Mia is still inside the container that is named ‘Nowhere.’

Soon, Mia’s container is intercepted near a checkpoint, and all the persons inside the container are shifted to the back. They put up a false wall so that no one fails to find out what’s behind it. However, the patrolling officer is very cunning and finds out about the hiding. Mia meanwhile climbs up to a wooden package box while the officer orders to shoot everyone inside. Mia witnesses the death of other passengers, and she trembles with fear.

What Happens to Mia after?

After the mass killing, Mia finds herself alone in the container, going through the other stuff, acquiring the courage that she requires to travel to the unknown. She sleeps only to find out that the container is finally on a cargo ship. But, her luck runs out as a huge storm hits the ship. Mia cries for help, but only a miracle can save her now. Well, miracles don’t always happen, at least not this soon. The containers go into the sea, and Mia takes a hit inside and goes unconscious.

The following day, Mia finds herself in the most impossible circumstances. The container she is in already took a few bullets beforehand. Now, it is floating in the sea; water is getting in, and the container is slowly submerging under the sea. It is locked from the outside, so there is no chance for Mia to get out of the container. Also, she is pregnant with her unborn child. What can she do? Can she do anything at this moment?

How does Mia plan to survive?

We may have forgotten, but we are built for such situations. Discovery Channel may tell you that a human is not as agile as a cheetah. But humans have intelligence, and that kicks into gear when survival comes into play. No other creature in the world has a survival instinct like humans. And for a mother who is about to give birth to her child? Well, you can’t calculate infinity, can you?

Mia at first fears death, and then she understands that there is a chance that she can at least survive the night. When the night passes, she wishes to survive the day. She gathers whatever she finds near her, opens up the wooden boxes around her, finds numerous Tupperware boxes inside them, and also clothes. She gathers some food, and now she finds hope.

Mia tries to contact Nico, but there isn’t a strong signal. She connects with him once and tells him that she is in the middle of an ocean. Nico assures her that he is coming to rescue her from that situation. And he wants her to survive until that moment. Mia doesn’t know if it will be possible; however, she promises that she will be here when he arrives.

How does Mia give birth to her daughter?

In a situation where Mia is left with nothing but hope, she is the richest being on earth. Suddenly, her water breaks, and amidst all the chaos, a serene cry is heard in the middle of nowhere. Mia gives birth to her baby daughter, Noa. She names her as Nico wishes her daughter’s name to be. Now, the struggle for food and water starts.

She tries to cover the holes but fails. She tries to make a hole in the top of the container. Whatever she tries, she fails at almost everything until one day, her determination overtakes nature’s cruelty. She finally makes a hole at the top of the container and is able to get out of it for the first time. She learns to catch fish; she even caters to her injuries and creates fire with alcohol to keep Noa warm.

One morning, Mia receives a call from Nico. The sun is shining bright and warm, Noa is experiencing the breeze with her little fingers, while Mia understands that Nico is not coming. Nico tries to slip into one of the cargo ships, and he is shot. He is losing a lot of blood when Mia holds the phone in front of Noa. Nico sobs; Noa doesn’t understand that the very next moment, she may not have a father.

Nico bids goodbye to Mia and wants her to survive along with his daughter. Survive! What an easy thing to say, even for a dying man. Among the couple, it was always Nico who used to be calm while Mia was tense about everything. Today, right at this moment, Nico’s voice trembles with great agony. Mia calms herself and promises that she will take care of Noa, no matter what.

Nico is dead. Mia is left with Noa, and they are also on the verge of losing the container. It is almost filled with water inside. As the container goes into the depths of the sea, Mia jumps inside to grab Uma’s picture and the sneakers Nico asks her only to eat when they reach Ireland. When Mia tries to come back, her legs are stuck in some strap.

By the time she rescues herself and comes out of the container, Noa’s raft is lost in the sea. Mia makes the raft with the Tupperware boxes and wood so that it can float when the time arrives. But Mia has lost track of her baby. She shouts her name in the middle of the sea when a blue whale goes past her. A mother recognizes another mother’s situation. Mother Nature is finally pleased with Mia’s fight so far.

The blue whale circulates around Noa’s raft and splashes some water on her. Noa starts crying, which Mia follows. She reaches her daughter and rests herself, hoping that someone will come. Before all of this, she has already seen a seagull coming for the fish she has for food. Seagulls do not venture into the deep seas as they are mostly found on the islands or ports.

Who rescued Mia and Noa in the sea?

The following day, Mia sees a seagull flying above her. She opens one of the boxes and struggles hard to bring a fish out of it. She does so, and a squabble starts to fly around the raft. In the distance, a lady on a boat and her father see this. When they arrive, by that time, they can only find the raft and Noa inside it. The lady rescues her and finds a strap.

She grabs the strap and pulls. Mia’s body comes out of the sea. The lady and her father know what Mia has been through in the sea, fighting alone to save her only child. Now, the lady fights back. She does intense CPR so that Mia can breathe again. And she breathes; she breathes like she is grasping the world for the first time. She looks at Noa, the sea, and the island ahead. Mia knows she has won. She knows she has a story to share with the world that no one will believe.

How can a single woman give birth to a baby in a container and survive for almost a month in the sea with no food and drinkable water? Moms, you see! They can do the most impossible tasks that leave you wondering for a while.
