As expected, Parish Episode 3 tells us that The Horse is not dead. He is severely injured, though, and Gray takes it upon himself to save his ass. Of course, part of him doesn’t want Luke to live in a world without his father, but the greater arc here is his loyalty to the job.
The episode also introduces the other bad guy that we have been waiting for, and as expected, the storytelling beats do nothing about him. At least, not thus far. He appears and reads out some existential bullshit for a job not done well, and we are supposed to care? I mean, if you are planning to make him menacing, give him some ground first. Anyway, the episode is mostly about Gray helping The Horse out of his wounded mess. There are some underlying themes about repentance with the obvious Christian imagery. However, they don’t add up to much.
At this point, I am not expecting the show to really pick up and shock me. The following article will examine Episode 3, “Sanctuary,” in detail. Please be aware of spoilers.
Parish Episode 3 Recap:
So, the new episode opens with us realizing the obvious. The Horse, whose death was left with a cliffhanger, is just brutally wounded. The attackers, which is a group of men who laughably say ‘Wooof’ to cheer each other up, follow them to the cemetery but are forced to run away when the NOPD choppers start taking the rounds because of the noise so many bullets made during the shooting.
Gray decides that they should go to a hospital, but seeing how the situation may become sticky for them, Gray decides to go to Anne (Amanda Brugel). Anne, who we briefly saw in the first episode, has taken up the life of a sister at a nearby mission. From the likes of it, she was a medical profession, and she owes her life to Gray. So, in view of choosing to stay away from the life of crime, she decides to help The Horse nonetheless.
All through the patching up of his wounds, we can sense that Anne is not interested in helping people in the criminal profession. However, Gray, who was a savior to her from her ex-husband, couldn’t be turned away. She knew he wouldn’t come to her, especially after both of them decided to leave the life of crime behind if he didn’t have to.
So, in spite of the reluctantly she helps patch The Horse’s wound. However, while they are about to leave, one of the men who was a part of the shootout traces them to the mission. He puts a gun to Anne’s head and gets into a fight with Gray and The Horse, who manage to get the better of him. The three of them, Gray, Luke, and The Horse escape from the place in Colin’s truck, whom Gray calls up for help, in spite of The Horse doubting him for being the mole.
What might have been the reason for the attack on The Horse?
On the other end, we see Shamiso, The Horse’s sister, pissed with Zenzo, who was supposed to be the head of security for The Horse. She blames him for not being alert, especially when The Horse is with Luke. So, she decided to take things into her own hands and reachs the house of The Businessman we saw in the last episode.
Since the gang is now in business with him for providing working laborers with Visas at the Casino, their competitor, Anton, who had been doing the work till now, might have become agitated. The reason for the attack is obvious. Like any business where one of the people holds a monopoly, when Anton realized that the Zimbaweins were going to take over his work, he wanted to eradicate the person responsible.
Parish Episode 3 Ending, Explained:
Who is the Mole who led to the attack?
All through the episode, we also see a really worried Rose trying to figure out what’s going on with Gray after she discovers the gun at home. Talking to her daughter also made her pretty sure that Gray is getting involved with something other than his own business that has been going down.
To find things out, she visits his office but only finds more documents that point toward Gray’s obsession with what led to their son’s death. We can clearly see that the incompetency of the police was one of the reasons, but there’s more to it than that.
After Gray is done with everything, he and Colin drive away from The Horse’s place. This is where Gray questions Colin if he is the one who is responsible for the attack. Colin is furious at Gray, who is not happy about being blamed as the Mole when he had previously saved Gray’s life and served time.
At this point, anyone can be a mole. It can be Zonzo, who doesn’t like his brother leading the gang, or Colin, who might have been paid by Anton. However, the best bet would be Gray himself.
How does Gray know Anton?
My theory comes from the fact that Anton is gleefully seen sitting in Gray’s home when he finally arrives after the job during the ending of Parish Episode 3. So, it’s possible that Gray used to work for Anton in the past, and he might have gotten involved with the entire thing with The Horse just to do one last job for Anton.
I also think that Gray is helping Anton, not because he wants to do one last job and be out. He is helping him because he thinks that Anton is somehow responsible for his son’s death and has been planning everything out to get revenge. At this point, these are just speculations, so let’s wait for Parish Episode 4 for more details.
