Netflix’s latest limited series Vladimir is an adaptation of the 2022 novel written by Julia May Jonas. The eight-episode series stars Rachel Weisz, Leo Woodall, and John Slattery. It is a small (roughly 30 minutes per episode), focused drama that uses our protagonist’s charming rizz to slowly pull us into a character’s messy inner life. The miniseries follows the story of an elite college professor struggling with crises in both her personal and professional life in the most uncomfortable ways. By choosing to break the fourth wall (at all times!), the series tries to feel intimate but at the same time feels like it is using the trick of letting us inside her head way too much. While there is no denying the fact that Rachel Weisz holds the entire show together, I honestly wonder why the other actors chose to give such poor performances. Even when the writing falls into familiar patterns and doesn’t really explore much emotional depth, leading the series to feel frustrating at times, it is also strangely binge-worthy.

In this article, I will break down the thriller miniseries. Please note there are major spoilers throughout, so it is best to watch Vladimir (2026) before if you want to avoid any surprises.

During their conversation, Vlad accidentally spills his drink on his pants. The awkward moment strangely catches M’s attention and adds to the tension between them. Their time together ends abruptly when John arrives home. Vlad continues chatting excitedly about his writing and casually reveals that his wife once nearly died when their child was two years old.

After Vlad leaves, John apologizes for taking M for granted. He also asks her to help delay his disciplinary hearing at the university until he can retire, which would allow him to keep his full pension. M agrees when she learns that Lila has joined the case against him. Meanwhile, their daughter Sid speaks with John but continues ignoring M’s calls. At the university, Vlad asks M to show him around campus and also asks to read her novel, which makes her happy. During their walk, M admits she hasn’t written anything in a long time due to writer’s block but Vlad encourages her.

Later, M feels discouraged when only a few students enroll in her class, and her favorite student Edwina switches to Cynthia’s class. She tries to stay busy by helping John’s case and arranges a meeting with Lynn, the college president’s wife. Vlad later invites her to a faculty happy hour, where she notices him flirting with others and remembers when men once flirted with her the same way. That night, M reads Vlad’s novel while smoking and realizes she actually enjoys it. Feeling inspired again, she begins writing a new story about an older woman who becomes fascinated with a younger colleague. Meanwhile, Sid keeps trying to reach her. Later that night, M is suddenly pushed into her backyard pool by an unknown person.

He blames M for encouraging him to go out, and he reveals that Lynn has decided to move forward with the disciplinary hearing after all.

At the university, Edwina approaches M to ask for a letter of recommendation. However, she keeps praising Cynthia’s class, which quietly irritates M. While watching Cynthia and Vladimir together, M begins imagining romantic situations between them. Trying to get over her growing fascination with Vlad, M attempts to befriend Cynthia, although Cynthia repeatedly keeps her distance. Eventually M insists on inviting Cynthia and her daughter Phee to a small pool party at her house. Later, M runs into Vlad at the university and they talk about gothic romance novels. Their conversation again sparks M’s imagination, but she decides to control her feelings by encouraging Vlad to send Cynthia and Phee to the pool party instead.

That evening M prepares dinner for her family, although John and Sid mostly create more chaos than help. Sid suggests becoming John’s lawyer for the upcoming case, but M strongly opposes the idea and does not want her involved. During the conversation, Sid becomes emotional when the topic of children comes up. John clearly understands what is troubling their daughter but refuses to explain it to M. While preparing for the pool party, M becomes anxious about wearing a swimsuit and starts worrying about her appearance. Meanwhile, at the university she teaches the novel Rebecca, but her students criticize it for its outdated themes while M passionately defends the story’s intense emotions. Vladimir (2026) Episode 4 ‘Bad Behavior’ Recap:

What was written in Lila’s letter?

The episode shows M lying in bed with John, but her mind is clearly somewhere else. She keeps drifting into thoughts about Vlad, and John quickly notices the change in her behavior. He asks if something is wrong and wonders why she seems distracted. M avoids giving a direct answer and brushes the moment aside, pretending that everything is normal.

Later, while cleaning up after the pool party, M finds Vlad’s swimming trunks that he accidentally left behind. Instead of returning them, she quietly hides them, keeping the small reminder of him to herself. Not long after that, she sees Lila outside her house. Lila quickly drops a letter into the mailbox and runs away before M can speak to her. Curious and uneasy, M opens the letter and is immediately shocked by what she reads. She takes it straight to Sid. The letter accuses M of retaliation. Lila claims that M deliberately punished her academically because of her relationship with John. This creates a serious legal risk. Since John’s messages show that his relationships with the students involved consenting adults, the situation now makes M look more responsible for the conflict. Sid is already under pressure and becomes even more frustrated, especially after realizing that a friend who had been helping their defense recently misled her emotionally.

Sid suggests that M apologize to Lila to calm things down, but M refuses. She insists that Lila failed the class simply because her work was not good enough. Later, M speaks with her colleague Priya, who agrees with her. Priya also casually remarks that Vlad may not stay long at the university since writers like him often leave small towns for better opportunities. M disagrees, though her growing thoughts about Vlad continue to distract her. Meanwhile, M secretly enters David’s office and steals Lila’s academic file. The records show Lila lost a scholarship decision. Cynthia later burns the file, erasing the evidence. That night, Vlad sends M a shirtless selfie.

Vladimir (2026) Episode 5 ‘Play It As It Lays’ Recap:

Why is M asked to resign?

Vladimir (2026)

The episode begins with M asking Sid what Vlad might mean by sending a hugging face emoji. Sid explains that people often use that emoji when they feel unsure and want to test the situation without being too obvious. According to Sid, the next step depends entirely on M. She can either ignore the message or respond and see where things go. M decides the only way to truly understand Vlad’s intentions is to spend time alone with him and observe how he behaves.

At the university, David suddenly realizes that Lila’s academic file is missing. He immediately confronts M and demands that she return it because the committee already knows the file exists. M quietly panics since the file has already been destroyed. While dealing with this pressure, she runs into Edwina, who asks about the recommendation letter M had promised to submit for her. M lies and claims she already sent it. Unfortunately, she soon discovers that the deadline has passed and the university will not accept late submissions. Despite everything falling apart around her, M remains distracted by Vlad. She organizes a subcommittee meeting even though Florence cannot attend. When Vlad begins flirting playfully in the group chat, M feels excited and suddenly inspired to start writing again. She even keeps his forgotten swimming trunks hidden inside her purse.

Later at home, M finally admits to Sid and John that she burned Lila’s file. Sid reacts with frustration, while John focuses on trivial household problems and insists they go grocery shopping. At the store, John behaves inappropriately with a cashier named Dawn, who also works at the university. In the parking lot, several students witness John speaking to M in a disrespectful way, making the situation even more embarrassing. Back at the university, M asks David to help cover up the missing file, but he refuses. Sid then invites Lila to their house so M can apologize. The meeting turns tense, and Lila leaves angrily. Later, Vlad invites M to lunch on the day of John’s hearing. By evening, complaints reach the administration, and M is asked to resign.

After the meeting, M sits alone outside smoking and reflecting on the situation. She feels the accusations are unfair and insists that she should not be blamed for John’s actions. While she is still upset, Vlad approaches her and starts talking about a book he is reading. He quickly notices her mood and gives her a gentle, comforting hug. Even during this emotional moment, M cannot stop imagining romantic scenarios involving him. At home, John does not consider the administrative leave a major issue since M would still receive her salary. Instead, John and Sid focus on preparing for the upcoming hearing. Sid plans to challenge Lila’s credibility by using some of Lila’s personal writing online. M becomes even more irritated when she learns that Sid has started seeing Alexis again, which only adds more tension to their already complicated household.

Hoping to repair the damage to her reputation, M attends a party hosted by the college’s wealthy benefactors. She believes she might persuade Lynn to support her. However, the plan quickly fails when M insults Lynn during their conversation and leaves the party feeling embarrassed. Later, she releases her frustration by writing about Vlad while imagining him again. The next morning, M finds Sid and Alexis peacefully making breakfast together. Sid reveals that she plans to move back in with Alexis and is applying for jobs in the city. After another argument, M storms out. Later, on the day of John’s hearing, she waits outside the college parking lot where Vlad joins her, and she confesses her feelings.

Why does M drug Vlad?

They say John manipulated them emotionally and used his authority as a professor to make them feel important and chosen. As the testimonies continue, Sid grows more distressed and repeatedly calls and messages M, hoping she will appear and support them.

At the same time, M ignores every message and drives Vlad to a café far from the college. Vlad’s wife Cynthia keeps trying to contact him, but he also ignores her calls. At the café, M encourages him to sit with her and talk about his novel. Whenever he tries to leave, she finds small reasons to keep him there longer and continues ordering drinks so the conversation will continue. Eventually Vlad insists he must return home because Cynthia is feeling unwell. M quickly suggests another plan and invites him to her cabin, claiming it will be a peaceful place where he can concentrate on writing. She flatters him by praising his talent and telling him he deserves time to focus on himself. During the conversation, she even hints that Cynthia might be having an affair, which leaves Vlad confused and uncertain.

Vladimir (2026)

When they reach the cabin, M secretly hides the WiFi router and the telephones so neither of them can contact anyone. Her phone fills with missed calls and messages from Cynthia and other family members, but M ignores them and only sends John a short message saying she needs space. Instead of working on his novel, Vlad spends the afternoon drinking and talking with her. M becomes irritated when she realizes he never seriously reviewed her book. After a tense moment, she secretly mixes pills into his drink. When he becomes weak, she panics and chains him to a chair. When Vlad wakes up, he begins screaming.

She also says that they almost hooked up only because she had told him about John and Cynthia supposedly having an affair. To make the story sound believable, she adds that he accidentally dropped his phone in the toilet. In the morning, M gives him the number of a car service and Vlad leaves the cabin. After he goes, M begins to realize that she may have crossed a line. Feeling guilty, she texts John an apology and promises that she will return home soon.

Vladimir (2026) Ending Explained:

What happened at John’s hearing?

Meanwhile, John’s hearing continues. Before the next session begins, John calls M and calmly tells her that it might be better if she stays away from the trial. During the hearing, Lila gives her testimony. She explains that she had been young, inexperienced, and emotionally vulnerable when she became involved with John. She says that she admired him as a teacher and felt hurt when he used that trust. However, when she speaks about M, she only says that M had always been a good professor. Sid finally understands that Lila did not chase John and that John was the one who took advantage of the situation. After the hearing ends, Sid leaves the building in frustration before the final verdict is announced. Later, John calls M again and tells her that although he has been fired, the reports against him were dismissed and he will still receive his pension. He treats this outcome like a small victory.

Did M cause the fire at the cabin?

Back at the cabin, Vlad unexpectedly returns after going for a long walk. He says that he slept better than he has in years and now feels inspired to write again. The two talk honestly about their lives, their marriages, and their creative struggles. They eventually share an intimate moment, but once it ends, M sends him away because she finally feels ready to finish writing her novel. Soon after, John arrives at the cabin and the truth about Cynthia is revealed. She had only been spending time with him while writing and taking medication. The ending of Vladimir (2026) shows a sudden fire later breaks out in the cabin, forcing everyone to escape (or did they?). The final sequence shows M grabbing her finished manuscript and running outside. She later talks directly to the camera, suggesting how the story ends: she is finally able to finish her new manuscript. Vlad also writes one, although her book is better. She also tells us that when the fire broke out, she called 911 and everyone was safe and sound, but thinks we don’t trust her, subtly yet again teasing us with her sly personality.
