My Happy Marriage (Season 1), Episode 5 “Ripples” Recap:
The episode begins with Kiyoko gifting Miyo a kimono. Yurie and Keiko express how beautiful the kimono looks on Miyo. Miyo tells Kiyoko that she cannot accept his gift as there are too many kimonos. Kiyoko tells her to accept it as a ‘thank you’ for the braid she made him. Keiko and Yurie chuckle at their budding romance. Yurie informs Miyo that Kiyoko chose the material for the kimono, and Miyo is grateful.
On the other side, Koji’s father plants a poisonous seed in Kaya’s mind. He shows her images of Miyo and Kiyoko and tells her that Miyo is doing exceptionally well with Kiyoko. Kaya is burning with rage. Koji’s father also expresses that Shinji probably did not want to marry Kaya off to a cruel man and hence sent Miyo away. Kaya tells him she would talk to her father as he would not say ‘No’. Koji’s father is excited as he does not have to get his hands dirty to get the job done.
Miyo is grateful to Godo and Kiyoko as she reunites with Hana. She decided to make dinner for Godo and invite him home to thank him. Godo is excited to meet Miyo again, but Kiyoko reminds him to stay focused as he has night patrol. Godo was excited to try Miyo’s food but was confident it would be delicious. Kiyoko warns him not to act like he is close to Miyo, and Godo teases him, asking if he is jealous. Kiyoko denies it, but Godo knows it is jealousy. They reach Kiyoko’s house, and Kiyoko and Godo are fighting. Godo blackmails him, saying he will complain to Miyo if he hurts him. Miyo welcomes them home, and Kiyoko is stunned to look at Miyo’s beauty. Godo compliments Miyo on how she dresses. Kiyoko walks up to her and says she is beautiful, making Miyo blush, and he also tells her that the Kimono suits her. Miyo realizes that they have neglected Godo and invites him inside the house.
On the other hand, Kaya was using Shiki-gami to spy on Miyo, and she was angered as Miyo was happier than her. Godo is thoroughly enjoying the food prepared by Miyo. Godo tells Kiyoko that he was jealous of him as he was getting to eat such good homemade food every day. Miyo thanks Godo for helping her reunite with Hana. Godo tells her that he has just given her a ride home, and Miyo responds by saying he has taken precious time to help an unknown person. Godo gets emotional and excited and tells Miyo that nobody has ever been so kind to him. He also asks her to dump Kiyoko as he is a pain and asks her to marry him instead. Kiyoko chokes on his drink. Kiyoko yells at Godo, and he tells them both that it is a joke.
Kiyoko sends Godo away as he is wasted. Kiyoko affectionately asks Miyo if the dinner has gone according to her wish, and Miyo thanks him by saying that she got a chance to thank Godo because of him. Kaya tries to convince her father that she is better suited for Kiyoko than Miyo, and her father refuses. She pleads, asking for the reason, and he tells her that she should practice homemaking skills if she is bored.
Miyo is having another nightmare where spirits surround her. Kiyoko notices and holds her in her arms. He senses a robust magical presence and wonders how that is possible, as nobody has broken the protection around his house. He wakes Miyo up from the bad dream. He asks Miyo to tell him if she ever sensed anything was wrong. He consoles her by saying she will never be alone, no matter where she goes. Kaya attempts to toy with Koji to get what she wants. She asks him if he prefers being engaged to his sister rather than her. She informs him that his father has agreed. Koji wonders what his father and Kaya are planning on doing to Miyo.
Miyo prepares lunch for Kiyoko and Yurie, and she has decided to drop by his workplace to bring him lunch. Yurie had asked her to take a different pouch that day as it matched the kimono she wore, but she needed to remember to keep the amulet that Kiyoko had given her and had asked to keep with her at all times. Koji visits his father but is shocked to see Kaya there. Koji tells her that her father has already said no to his alliance with Miyo, and Kaya asks if Miyo is the one who agrees. Koji is worried and asks his father what is going on. He asks him to be patient and watch as things will start making sense in time.
Miyo visits Kiyoko, and he thanks her for lunch. He asks if she has the amulet, and she says she does. Once Kiyoko left, Miyo realized that she had forgotten the amulet at home and started worrying. Yurie suggests they rush home at once. Miyo was being hard on herself when a car approached them, and entities kidnapped Miyo. Koji is angered with his father as his father always knew of how Miyo was abused and did nothing. In anger, he tried to use his abilities against his father but failed as he was no match for his father.
My Happy Marriage (Season 1), Episode 5 “Ripples” Ending, Explained:
The episode ends with Koji’s father using his abilities on Koji to keep him low and not get in his way of bringing Miyo back and fulfilling his plans. Koji’s brother comes to his rescue. Koji expresses how he had failed Miyo, and his brother asks him if he had given up. After a pep talk from his brother, Koji is more determined than ever to save Miyo. Yurie expresses how sorry she is and informs about the amulet. Koji comes rushing into Kiyoko’s office and asks for his help to save Miyo. Miyo and Kiyoko were starting to get comfortable with each other and were in the initial stages of love when more significant problems came up. If Miyo had that amulet on her, Kiyoko could have tracked her down quickly.
Koji and Kiyoko will join hands in finding and rescuing Miyo, but once that is done, will Koji be okay when Miyo chooses Kiyoko over him? Or will Miyo be forced into something she is uncomfortable with as she has been all her life?
There is another aspect to this as we see Miyo had dreamt about spirits troubling her, and the very next day, she was abducted by entities. Could this mean that Miyo has some abilities she has yet to discover? And will being in danger bring her powers to the surface? It will also test love and trust as Miyo is separated from Koji and Kiyoko. The decisions each of them make individually will determine the strength of the relationship they share.
