Evillive (Season 1), Episodes 1 & 2: Evillive is a Korean noir crime thriller television series that starts slow but plays on desperation, ego, and ethical dilemmas throughout. Our protagonist, Dong Soo, is a lawyer haunted by a past suspension. Torn between financial struggles, family issues, and a mysterious case, Dong Soo is entangled with the enigmatic Seo Do-young, a former baseball player with a dark past. The plot thickens with revelations about Do-young’s arrest, sparking suspicions that prompt Dong Soo and his brother, Beom-Jae, to investigate.

Evillive (Season 1), Episode 1 Recap:

The episode begins with two men running inside a house, trying to hide from someone. A guy dressed in black and a woman appears in front of him, and he shoots her, and she falls dead. As this happens, Dong-Soo, who was hiding under a bed, regrets getting involved with some people and situations. We are taken to a flashback where we see Dong Soo visiting prison regularly to meet a particular inmate. He is a lawyer and promises to reduce the inmate’s prison sentence for a nominal fee, but the inmate is unhappy as he thought Dong Soo was a public defender. That inmate complains about the lawyer to his other cellmates. They tell him that he is famous and call him “Sinnamsi.” This nickname was given as he was known to take any case except that involved children. In the same cell, we see someone throwing a baseball.

Dong Soo leaves the prison and runs into his former colleagues. One of the colleagues mocks him as they had worked in the same law firm, but Dong Soo was suspended for three years. They ask him to join them for a gathering where many other lawyers would be present, but Dong Soo does not answer. We are introduced to Dong Soo’s brother, Han Beom-Jae, works at an electronics shop. We see Beom-Jae sell a computer at a higher price to a customer and cashing in the profit. Beom-Jae’s friend visits the store, gives him contact and tells him that if he contacts them, he will make good money. Beom-Jae has a daughter who is attached to Dong Soo. His mother has dementia and seems to forget Beom-Jae, as his father had an affair.

Beom-Jae helps Dong Soo to find clients. Beom-Jae gives him a new case and tells him he could make much money with this one. The case was for a former baseball player called Seo Do-young. During high school, he beat up his coach over a disagreement, and the match was telecasted live. After that, he had become a gang member of a powerful gang. Do-young had taken over many pubs which were previously owned by other gangs. Beom-Jae also shows him an underground gambling house that Do-young ran. Dong Soo returns home wondering what he should do, but he sees his wife has hurt her wrist and tends to her. Dong Soo decides to meet Do-young. Dong Soo is fearful because of the intimidating mannerism of Do-young. Do-young wanted Dong Soo to tail his wife, who he assumed was cheating on him, and he promised to pay him a large amount.

Dong Soo rejects the offer and tells him he won’t cross the line. Dong Soo’s wife is struggling because of pain and is allowed to come home early. Dong Soo gets home and receives a package from security. He opens it to find a lot of money. Beom-Jae asks him to take the job as it pays well, but Dong Soo is unsure as it might hurt a woman. He gets home and sees his wife’s hand in a cast. She receives a message from her workplace, and Dong Soo reads it. It is about a sexual harassment case canceled from being investigated. Upon confronting his wife, she tells him that she was sexually harassed by her boss when she had taken up a job to clean his house. She also tells him that she had borrowed 10 million won as his mother had started a fire in the old age home, and she wanted to settle it; otherwise, they would discharge her. Dong Soo decides to take it up with her boss.

He visits the manager and warns him, but the manager calls him a fake lawyer and insults his wife. Dong Soo leaves and has a mental breakdown in his car. He returns to the manager’s office and throws the money Do-young had given him, but the manager continues insulting his wife and him, and Dong Soo loses control. He picks up a golf club and looks at the manager. The manager is now afraid and starts to apologize. Dong Soo breaks the coffee table and warns the manager to quit or transfer branches. He also reminds him that he was going through a divorce, and because of this incident, he should not have to lose child custody. He later visits the prison and agrees to work with Do-young.

Evillive (Season 1), Episode 2 Recap:

The episode begins in a flashback where Do-young is seen drunk driving. Dong Soo and Beom-Jae meet with Seo-Kyo, a waiter at Ye-Ji’s bar (Do-young’s girlfriend). They ask him about Ye-ji’s whereabouts, but he tells them she is punctual and doesn’t know anything about her private life. He does give them her schedule on any particular day. Dong Soo tails Ye-ji but does not find anything suspicious. She had gone out with assemblyman Shinnam, but that had something to do with work and with many other people. He visits Do-young in prison and tells him that nothing suspicious is going on, but instead of being happy, he attacks Dong Soo. He warns him by reminding him of his family. He also asks him if he is taking his money for free. Dong Soo gets out of the prison terrified.

Beom Jae and Dong Soo meet, and Dong Soo informs him about the situation, and Beom Jae suggests they back out. At the same time, two of Do-young’s gang members visit him in prison. The main guy have tattoos and pretend to be on Do-young’s side. Do-young’s responses to him are filled with aggression and annoyance. Beom Jae finds Do-young’s arrest suspicious. He tells Dong Soo that since it is a drunk and assault case, the prison sentence should not be long, and usually, gang members do everything they can to get their leader out of prison. Dong Soo and Beom Jae decide to investigate the matter. Dong Soo reaches out to his former colleague and enquires about the case. He asks about Do-young’s girlfriend and is informed that he wasn’t involved with any woman, but his boss had issues with women and was living with a young bar hostess.

Dong Soo’s ex-superior walks in, and he confronts him about how he felt he was taken advantage of in the past, which cost him a suspension. Beom Jae and Dong Soo turn off Ye-ji’s house security cameras and break in. They then set up spy cameras in the living room and rooms. As they casually walk around, they see a man on a bed with life-supporting equipment. Dong Soo realizes this was probably the boss his former colleague was talking about. The man with the tattoo gets into Dong Soo’s car and asks why he met Do-young. Dong Soo lies and tells him he needs a favor, but he refuses since he is sarcastic and arrogant. The man goes through Dong Soo’s bag and asks about the dates marked on the calendar, and he tells him that he collects installments from clients who can’t pay him at once.

Dong Soo waits outside Ye-ji’s house until the cleaning lady leaves and asks Beom Jae to follow Ye-ji. Dong Soo gets frustrated and tells Beom Jae that he will get in anyway, but he informs him that Ye-ji is returning home. But Ye-ji returns to the bar, and Dong Soo has some hope now. The waiter in Ye-ji’s bar asks Beom Jae if he needs a part-time job as no driver can take Ye-ji home from the bar. Dong Soo decides to be the driver and asks Beom Jae to wait. Dong Soo asks to go to the bathroom and manages to get away with some of the installed spy cameras. He tells Beom Jae that he must return and get the others soon. At home, Dong Soo and his wife talk, and we get to know that she had been trying IVF for years, and it wasn’t working out, and she had decided to give up.

The next day, Dong Soo drives to the prison but gets a call from Seon-Kyo (waiter at the bar) informing that some gang members are asking about him and so he needs to stay low. Dong Soo realizes that he is being followed. He stops near a market, loses the gang and heads straight to the prison. He gives Do-young two USBs in the prison and informs him that everything he needs to know is there. He also tells him that one of the USBs has additional information and comments that he was late for the meeting because he had to escape from someone who hated Do-young.

Evilive (Season 1) Episode 2 Ending Explained:

Is Do-young alive?

He exits the prison and sees Beom Jae’s many missed calls. He tries calling, but he does not receive them. He checks everywhere, realizes he must have gone to Ye-ji’s place, and rushes there. Meanwhile, Do-young watches the clip and discovers that Ye-ji is cheating with the tattooed gang member. In the prison that night, some men sent by the tattooed guy attempt to kill Do-young. Dong Soo reaches Ye-ji’s house and finds Beom Jae. They decide to leave, but Ye-ji talks to the tattooed gang member at home. She enters the room, and they try to sneak out, but they see a shadow figure and rush back into the room and hide under the bed. Do-young comes in and shoots Ye-ji. Do-young senses someone under the bed and looks only to find Dong Soo. They stare at each other.

Now that Dong Soo’s job was done with Do-young, what would happen moving forward? Dong Soo might cross over to the dark side, and Do-young needs someone he can trust, as his gang appears to have moles within. The fact that he was drugged by his gang member and girlfriend and was attempted to be killed in prison shows how much danger he has to face now that he’s out of jail.
