Happiness Battle (Season 1 Finale), Episode 16 Recap:
The final episode begins with Do Jun pulling Jang out of the car and her dropping the tracking device. He destroys the device and drags Jang into the clinic. Na Young loses the signal of the tracking device, but Jung Ah tells them that she knows where Do Jun is headed. In a flashback, after Do Jun hits Jang, he reads the message she had sent to the cop. He takes his phone and sends a message to her, and replies to himself from her phone. In the dental clinic in front of Jang, he uses both phones and makes it look like Jang is asking for a high dosage of drugs to be put into her system.
Do Jun tells Jang that he thinks they are similar as Yu Jin harassed them both, and she should understand him. Jang tells him that he does not need a reason to kill her. He just wanted to, and she told him that she was not a trashy person like him to do anything remotely close to what he did. We see a flashback of Yu Jin telling Do Jun that he was never a proper man and did not satisfy her in bed. He gets angry at that thought and is about to inject drugs into Jang, but the security comes by the clinic.
While Do Jun speaks to the security, Jang escapes from the chair she was tied to. He gets back to the room to find her missing. She was hiding under a table and made a noise while picking up a used injection. Jun finds her and asks her to get out of there. He tells her that on the day Yu Jin died, Yu Jin could survive if he had dialled 911, but he did not on purpose. Jang takes the chance and stabs Do Jun with the injection in his chest. Jang tries to run away but Do Jun catches up to her.
Na Young, Jung Ah and Jin Seop arrive at the clinic and hear Do Jun yell at Jang. They push the security away and rush inside. Do Jun sees the lift move and hides himself along with Jang. They get inside the clinic to find the injection and knife. They split and search for her. Jung Ah asks them to call the cops. Do Jun brings Jang to the terrace. Jin Seop follows the blood to find Jang. Do Jun throws the USB from the terrace. Do Jun tells her that he wants her to die with him, picks her up, and tries pushing her off the terrace.
Na Young, Jin Seop and Jung Ah arrive at the right moment, and Jang finds the opportunity to kick him. He is holding on to the terrace’s railing, struggling to climb back to safety. Do Jun asks them for help, and Jang pulls him up. The medics and cops arrive. Do Jun was handcuffed, and Jang was being treated for her wounds. The cops inform Jang that the USB is damaged, and Jang confirms that if they had the file, Do Jun would be arrested. The cops give an affirmative response. The cops tell her that Ji Ye is ready to testify against him, and Jang informs him that she has the files from the USB on her phone.
Jang returns to the office the next day to hear some good news. She is promoted and asked to move to an overseas branch. Jin Seop tells her he knows he must congratulate her, but he worries about Yu Jin’s kids. Jung Ah calls the other mothers for dinner and informs them about her moving homes. They all received a message from the kindergarten asking the families to attend the family day event as the children had surprise gifts for their parents.
Na Young asks Tae Ho to attend the event and fulfil his duties as a father. Su Bin finds the divorce paper while searching for another document. He asks her about it, and she tells him it is a reminder of how he betrayed her. Jung Ah tells him that he may not abandon her people easily, but she also does not forgive them easily. Jin Seop asks Jang if she was not curious about how the kids were doing. She tells him it is all over, but he asks her to contact him if she decides to discuss it. Once he leaves, Jang goes to Yu Jin’s social media and sees the children’s happy faces. Jang reads the complaint Yu Jin had written, puts it in Pandora’s Box, and cries, but she scrolls through to the end to find more things written.

At the end of that document, Yu Jin confesses that Jang was her only family, and she was mad at Jang for abandoning her. She also writes that she was a fool as she could not hate Jang. Jang goes back to Yu Jin’s house and apologises to Yu Jin in front of the balcony. Jang decides to meet the kids. Jang goes to their house only to find out that they have moved. Su Bin finds a divorce lawyer’s visiting card on Jung Ah’s desk. Tae Ho is seen talking to someone on the call and saying that if his wife is throwing a fit, it would probably last three months, and he that he is not getting a divorce.
Tae Ho buys a ring for Na Young, goes down on one knee, and apologises. Na Young asks him to wire the money for child support and shuts the door on his face. Jung Ah informs Jang that the kids are moving to the US the next day but asks her to attend the family day event, but Jang refuses as the kids will not be there. But Jang finds a box of the kids’ toys in her apartment and tears up.
Su Bin gets on his knees, apologises to Jung Ah, and asks for another chance. He tells her that he knows he has hurt her badly but asks her not to leave his side. Jung Ah tells him that her friend had left the lawyer’s card with her, which did not mean anything. The family event begins. We see Jung Ah’s kid Min Sung give a sweet message to his parents. We also see A-rin tell her future brother/sister a sweet message.
Jang is about to leave when a clip of Ji Yul and Ha Yul is played. The kids address Jang at the beginning of the message. The kids ask her not to forget about them and be happy after they move to the US. Pictures of Jang and the kids are displayed on the screen. Jang asks Do Jun’s father to let her take care of the kids if they are okay. The kids and Jang hug each other and cry. Ji Ye is in prison and has a visitor. The visitor is the mother she had duped to get money. Ji Ye apologises, and the mother tells her that she deserves to feel sorry but asks her to let her daughter be friends with her child again. Jang had decided not to move overseas and stay back and look after the kids.
Happiness Battle (Season 1 Finale), Episode 16 Ending, Explained:
Will Do Jun pay a price for his crimes?
The kids are attached now to their uncle, Jin Seop. Jang and the kids decide to bury any traces of Yu Jin for a while. Jang ignores a call from her mother but leaves a message saying she will visit her with the kids some other time. Ji Ye writes a letter to her daughter from prison. Na Young joins Jung Ah’s company. Jang finds happiness in life’s little things.
Yu Jin’s murderer, Do Jun, is captured and put behind bars for all his crimes. In the end, Jang realises how Yu Jin really felt about her making her feel bittersweet, and she now cannot reciprocate those feelings as Yu Jin was dead. Jang does not make the same mistake she did with Yu Jin – she takes care of both of Yu Jin’s children. Unfortunately, in this finale episode, we do not see much of Do Jun after his arrest. We cannot see his emotions while he pays the price for his crimes. Jang finds happiness by being with the kids, capturing every moment and living life with them to the fullest.
We do not get to see much of Ju-a’s side of the story. We only see her still in Marilyn, along with her grandmother. All the loose ends of the episode are tied up in the end.
