The highly anticipated film of the year, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” is set to hit the theaters soon, and it’s hard for the fans to keep calm. The makers of the sequel film released the first official poster of the film featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in the roles of Joker and Harley Quinn, respectively. Now, to every fan’s delight, the first trailer of “Joker: Folie à Deux” has been unveiled, which marks an intriguing entry to the 2024 theatrical calendar.

Warner Bros. unveiled the look at CinemaCon, where “Joker 2” is among the top titles theater owners, who, just like everyone else, were curious for the first glimpse of the film. The 2019 “Joker” was a blockbuster hit, earning $1 billion at the box office. It also earned Phoenix an Oscar. Since that film was such a massive success, the expectations for the sequel are already high. However, while the first installment was solely a psychological thriller, the second installment has taken a different route by entering the musical genre.

Can shifting genre in the sequel film affect the success of Joker 2?

The character of Joker is a cult in itself, and a movie based on such an iconic character is indeed a treat for the fans. In 2019, filmmaker Todd Phillips delivered an incredible psychological thriller film. The film is loosely based on the DC Comics character of the same name. In the film, Phoenix stars as an aspiring comic who spirals down after his mental health issues intensify until he adopts the Joker persona, who ends the film with a folk-hero-like status as he inspires a riot in Gotham.

Now, Phoneix once again reprises his role as Authur Fleck/Joker in the upcoming sequel film. Interestingly, it will unite two Oscar winners, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, who will appear as Harley Quinn. The film will also mark the reunion of Phillips and Gaga, as Phillips previously produced her music-centric remake of “A Star Is Born.”

The “Joker 2” is said to be a musical. However, director Todd Phillips noted that, in some ways, it’s not all that different from the first film, as it also had music as a key element. When the filmmaker was asked if the upcoming sequel is a musical, he clarified, “We never talked about it like that. I like to say it’s a movie where music is an essential element. To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film.” In the first film, “Arthur has music in him. He has a grace to him.

The upcoming sequel is titled “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Folie à Deux is a medical term for an identical or similar mental disorder that impacts two or more people, usually members of the same family.

The first “Joker” film grossed over $1 billion and became the first R-rated film to do so. Following its success, expectations for the sequel have already risen.

Co-written by Phillips and Scott Silver, the film will arrive at the theaters on October 4, 2024.
