Julia Garner, prominently known for her role as Ruth Langmore in the Netflix crime drama series Ozark (2017–2022), has emerged as a Hollywood icon and is in high demand among filmmakers. Now, the actress is all set to collaborate with multitalented Zach Cregger, who wrote and directed the acclaimed horror film Barbarian. Julia Garner recently bagged the starring role in Weapons, the New Line horror movie that Cregger will helm.

In the upcoming project, Garner will star opposite Josh Brolin. Shooting is scheduled to commence in mid-May in Atlanta.

What can be expected from the upcoming Julia Garner starring film ‘Weapons’?

While Zach Cregger is set to serve as a director in the upcoming movie Weapons, he has also written the top-secret script for the project, which is described as an interrelated, multistory horror epic that is similar in tone to Magnolia, the 1999 film by Paul Thomas Anderson that featured a star-studded cast including Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore John C. Reilly, and others. The 1999 film is an epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of happiness, forgiveness, and meaning in the San Fernando Valley. Magnolia received positive reviews, with critics praising its direction, screenplay, storytelling, and its soundtrack.

If Cregger’s upcoming film is said to be inspired by Thomas Anderson’s film, the same reception can be expected from this film as well.

Cregger is an American actor, comedian, writer, director and producer. He is known for his appearances in the sitcoms Friends with Benefits, Guys with Kids, and Wrecked.  He also starred in the film Miss March, which he co-directed and co-wrote with Moore. Cregger made his solo screenwriting and directorial debut in 2022 with his horror thriller film Barbarian. The film received largely positive reviews, with praise for Cregger’s screenplay and direction. It grossed $45.4 million worldwide on a production budget of $4–4.5 million. It is Bill Skarsgård’s starring film is produced by Arnon Milchan, Roy Lee, Raphael Margules, and J. D. Lifshitz.

With his upcoming horror project, Cregger will once again collaborate with the Barbarian production team. He will co-produce the film along with Lee, Lifshitz, and  Margules.

As for the lead actress in the upcoming film, Julia Garner is an acclaimed actress who won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her Netflix series Ozark.

Apart from Weapons, Garner has been in high demand among directors as she has landed some big-studio gigs. She is in post on Paramount’s upcoming psychological thriller Apartment 7A and is currently in production opposite Christopher Abbott on Blumhouse/Universal’s Wolf Man, which is helmed by Leigh Whannell. Additionally, she’s been cast as the Silver Surfer in Marvel’s Fantastic Four.
