Directed by Piotr Trzaskalski, the 2024 Polish thriller “Nieobliczalna” (“Unpredictable”) attempts to cover numerous themes simultaneously, which affects the characters’ depth. While it is undoubtedly a good film, the intricacies of the characters and the motivations behind their actions are somewhat lost in the process. The performances of the actors, particularly Agnieszka Grochowska and Julia Wieniawa-Narkiewicz, are commendable. Agnieszka Grochowska, in particular, excels in portraying the complex character of Martyna, bringing brilliance and perfection to the role. “Nieobliczalna” is a worthwhile one-time watch, offering important messages that resonate with contemporary concerns.

Nieobliczalna (Unpredictable, 2024) Movie Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis:
The film starts with a crime scene where a woman possibly killed herself and a police investigation going on. We move back in time to when Martyne gives a costly lighter to her abusive husband, Wojciech. She has phases of panic attacks whenever she remembers how she was tortured by her husband. Anyway, Wojciech is a very successful and powerful businessman who is feared by a lot of people in town, and his father has now decided to move to a new flat owned by Martyna herself.
His father loves to spend most of his time drinking. Martyna is tasked with taking care of him. Martyna’s old flat is right beside her friend Alicja’s block and they plan to meet with each other after a long time. Later, we are introduced to Adelina, who works as a caretaker in a local swimming club and whose mother is very sick and has suicidal tendencies. After that, we see Alicja’s son, Daniel, who has come to spend the holiday with his mother. He is planning to move to Italy, which is not well received by his mother.
Why does Daniel Start to Distance himself from Adelina?
Through a dating app, Daniel meets with Adelina, and they become very intimate in no time. However, when Daniel learns about Adelina’s mother, he offers his sympathy, to which Adelina reacts awkwardly. Daniel leaves the house as he feels like he has disappointed Adelina because he has not much to offer. Later, Daniel meets with Martyna when Alicja is not at home. At first glance, he is driven by her beauty regardless of her age. Daniel starts flirting with her, which Martyna understands quite easily, and she tries to maintain the distance.
Soon after, when Daniel meets with Adelina again, he realizes that Adelina is not as good in bed as he had hoped for, which results in losing the affection for her. Soon after, Daniel starts giving signs to Martyna, and she never fails to maintain the distance because she knows the consequences will be heavy. Even Alicja also tells Martyna that she is worried that Daniel may leave her to pursue his dreams in Italy. On the other hand, Martyna is struggling within her house. One day, when she comes back home late after hanging with Alicja, Wojciech becomes very angry and hits her head against the wall, resulting in bleeding.
Why does Martyna need Alicja’s House?
Martyna has stopped herself for a long time now from allowing herself to live without fearing her abusive husband. Now, when she is physically abused once again, she falls victim to the unprecedented horror- lust. Even Wojcriech’s father gives her the jewelry of his wife and asks her to escape from his son’s prison with her daughter. Think about the situation of Martyna and Daniel. On one hand, we have Martyna, who wants to stay in this place because if she doesn’t, she will never get her daughter’s custody, as Wojciech can easily hire the best professionals to make sure of that. On the other hand, we have Daniel, who is looking for a reason to stay in this town. He fails to find that in Adelina and wants to be with Martyna badly.
Well, the situation demands this to happen as Martyna finally submits herself into the arms of a youngster, her friend’s son, Daniel. Their emotions break out as both are seeking love so badly that they are confused about norms, rather they don’t care about the morality of the relationship they have let themselves into. After the very first time, Martyna thinks that this will not happen ever again. But soon, she asks Alicja if she is thinking about starting tuition again and she needs a room for that because it is too loud at her place crowded with Wojciech’s people.
Alicja agrees that, as a nurse, she stays mostly at the hospital. She thinks it would be great if Daniel also spent more time with Martyna. Moreover, she thinks that Martyna can give her son a different perspective that will help him realize that he should stay and start a business with his mother. Well Daniel, however, decides to stay for the time being. But he starts to share a very intimate moment with Martyna on a regular basis.
What does Adelina learn about Wojciech and Martyna?
Adelina gets the feeling that Daniel is somehow neglecting her when, one day, he finds him with Martyna and later finds a condom at Daniel’s place. She is already in too much confusion as her mother, Joasia, has never said anything about who her father is. But, accidentally, one day, she finds some of Joasia’s old pictures. She later finds out that Joasia and Wojciech were together for a brief period of time, and right before she was born, Wojciech had abandoned her mother.
Adelina is already hurt enough because of her situation. Now, when she finds out that Daniel is cheating on her, she puts a hidden camera at Daniel’s place and writes ‘whore’ on one of the windows in Martyna’s home. Seeing Martyna realize that someone knows about her affair, she prepares herself to escape from this place before Wojciech knows about this. However, she already sees Wojciech being handed over some photographs and he seems very unpleasant seeing those pictures.
Martyna thinks that Wojciech knows about her affair, so she is living a nightmare because she will fall victim to physical abuse once again. But, the photographs delivered to Wojciech by Adelina were nothing but the same old photographs of Wojciech and Joasia. Wojciech realizes that Adelina is Joasia’s daughter and is here for money. Adelina begs him that it is not about anything but her mother only because she is ill and is going through a very rough patch. Wojciech not only declines to help, he even threatens to kill Adelina and Joasia if ever she tries to come close to him.

Why does Adelina Send the Video to Alicja?
Adelina’s inner self is experiencing an ocean of mixed emotions right now. Her father rejects her and refuses to even see her face, let alone embrace her with fatherly love, which she desperately needs. On top of that, her boyfriend is constantly cheating on her and is on the verge of leaving her forever. She probably finds herself in the same spot as her mother back in her younger days when she was cheated on as well.
All she needs now is the push that will remove her guilt of committing anything drastic and random. She comes back to her home and tells her mother that she has talked to Wojciech. Right then, Joasia tells her that she knew he would do the same to Adelina, and that is why she had never told her about him. This, the shallowness in her mother’s eyes, pushes Adelina to do that one thing that she should not have done.
She shares the video where Martyna and Daniel are in a very intimate situation with Alicja. Alicja, raging with so much anger right at that moment, as she too feels betrayed by her childhood friend, sends the clip to Wojciech. Adelina has also sent the clip to Martyna who has already made the plan to escape the town before Wojciech confronts her. But it is already too late because Alicja has already sent him the clip as he follows Martyna’s tracker and comes straight to her old flat where his father is staying.
How Does Martyna Plan to Put Wojciech Behind Bars?
Martyna visits Daniel one last time as she has her plan ready to leave with her daughter. But, soon, she sees Wojciech coming to that place, and he enters into his father’s flat. In the meantime, Martyna sees Adelina outside and follows her, saying that she never knew she was with Daniel. Later, Martyna sees Joasia standing at the window, trying to jump out of it and kill herself. Joasia is in a terrible state as she has seen Wojciech. His face brings out the old scars hidden inside her for so long.
When Martyna calls Joasia by her name, she shares a laugh with her, realizing that Martyna has remembered her. Right after that, Joasia jumps out of the window in front of Adelina and Martyna. When they come down screaming in disbelief, Martyna stops Adelina as she sees that Wojciech is looking at Joasia’s dead body, and she thinks of this situation as the only opportunity they can have to get rid of Wojciech once and for all.
Wojciech informs the police, and everyone believes that it is a suicide until a lighter is found at the spot, which is later recognized by Martyna as the one that she gave to Wojciech. Martyna has it all planned with Adelina as even she confesses to the police that Wojciech is her father, and he has even threatened to kill her and Joasia. So, she clearly thinks that Wojciech is the one who has killed her mother, and it was never a suicide.
That night, Martyna went back to her house to confront Wojciech as she knew that the following morning, when Martyna spoke in front of the police, they would arrest him as a suspect. If they found Martyna in a blood-wrenched condition, it would only work as a favor to them. The plan includes one last physical abuse that Martyna is ready to take on, as after this, there will be no Wojciech, and she will live peacefully, embracing the presence of her daughter.
At the end of the film, we see Alicja come to confront Martyna about what happened. But when she hears that Wojciech has hit her very badly, she regrets sending the clip to Wojciech. Right after, Martyna reveals her whole plan to Alicja. Later, she says that if Martyna agrees to cut off all ties with Daniel, she will remain silent about the real truth.
